Nowadays police officers have to turn in their badge and guns that are issued to them, same thing as the military the soldiers used to be able to bring home guns issued to them and some that they kept talking away from the other side,

@@billflk2364 my uncle retired as a Georgia State Trooper and part of his retirement memorabilia included his model 66 revolver, his hat, his handcuffs, and his whistle. After he passed away in 2011, my cousin had all of it, along with the folded flag from his Coffin, put into a beautiful display case in his den.

The model 28 "highway patrol" was the first weapon I carried when I became a police officer in Texas in 1976. It was large and heavy but it shot like a dream. I moved up to the model 19 - 4" k-frame. I still own two 19's; one 4" and one 2 1/2" k-frame revolvers, both early 70's manufacture dates. Love the wheel gun.

That time period was a great quality time for Smith and Wesson

When I was a kid in the early 60's (about 10-15 years old)I used to see these guns in the Sears spring & summer catalog. Back then if you were over 18 years old you could order them at the store and have it shipped to your door. Ironically the crime rate was a fraction of what it is now. Gee, I wonder what changed?

A polite society is an armed society. Nowadays we have gun free zones and the stupid ATF that do nothing to stop criminals and only go after lawful citizens

Appreciate you bringing the old highway patrolman out for a little exercise. He is still breathing fire wherever you aim him.

The Highway Patrolman / Model 28 was designed to save cost over the Model 27, making the Highway Patrolman more appealing to law enforcement sales. The Highway Patrolman lacking the polishing and checkered top strap of the Model 27. The finish on the Model 28 was satin blue as opposed to the polished blue or nickel finish on the Model 27. Standard barrel lengths were 4 and 6 inches, only a very few received a different length barrel. Sights were fully adjustable rear and a Baughman ramp front. Target stocks, target trigger, and target hammer which were standard on the Model 27 were extra cost options for the Model 28. Mechanically, the two are identical, it is the finish and available options that makes them different.

As much as I love the "bright blue" on the old Smiths, after I finally got a Model 28, the satin finish has grown on me. It's a no-nonsense working man's sidearm and a work of art at the same time. The tapered barrels are beautiful on these, too.

Thank you so very much for the wonderful memories! As a new rookie police officer working for a small town just south of Atlanta, I was assigned to go to the Georgia Police Academy in 1973. I bought a model 28 4" before I went and proceeded to shoot a 98% score on all three PPC courses! Needless to say, that 28 stayed on my hip for years after that. Sadly, I let it get away a few years later, but boy, would I love to get my mitts on another one. Thanks again, sir.

I inherited my dad's 28 when he passed and I wouldn't sell it for any amount of money! I have made 150 yard shot into the end of a quart Purex bottle! 4 out of 6 shots! of course, now, at 69, I can't see that far! LOL! It is one hell of a shooter! I love it and even though I have no sons, someone will inherit it! Thanks for the video! Personally, I always thought a 27 was to pretty for a working man's gun!

@@davidbaumgardner8374 Dad paid $75 for his brand new, in the box with the cleaning kit! THAT is a price I'd LOVE to see, today! Instead, EVRYTHING is SO inflated in price! I really do NOT believe the ACTUAL cost to make a gun is all that high! They COULD make GOOD weapons for a lot less!

My grandfather and dad for many years and myself for a little while carried the same highway patrolman as a duty carry in law enforcement.

My first new revolver that I bought over 50 years ago when I was 18 was a model 28 that I still own today

When I turned 21 back in 1971 I bought my first 6 inch Highway Patrolman for $ 95.00 when I lived back in suburban St. Louis, Missouri. I still have it decades later and it is a quality handgun. Later I managed to pick up a Model 27 which has a nicer finish but the are both about equally as accurate.

I carried a 4" model from 1977 to 1994. I brought mine to S&W to have them install the red ramp front sight and white outline rear sight. They did a trigger job for me and installed the smooth, wide target trigger. I added Pachmayr grips and backed it up with two HKS speed loaders. The department load was 158 grain, Remington, semi-jacketed hollow points. Today's shooters that are used to 9 mm, don't like the recoil of full-power .357 magnum loads.

I have a 6" S&W Model 57 in 41 Magnum. What a great round!

Hey Hickok. I have a Highway Patrolman 5 screw. It belonged to my Grandfather. It was his service revolver. He was a reserve sheriffs deputy in Columbia County Oregon beginning in 1960 for many years. He bought it from a friend for $100 and gave it to me for my 21st birthday when he was dying of cancer back in 1996. It’s my most important possession. I will never let it go.

Wow, nice to see another reg magnum in the clarksville area. I love mine. My grandfather bought it new many years ago. It has many thousands of rounds shot thru it. And it still gets used. Great smooth trigger.

I’ve got a 28-2 6” that was an absolute gem of a pawnshop find. Early 70’s extremely low round count as there wasn’t any any visible drag mark on the cylinder. It’s one of my favorite guns, I even love the finish.

Great gun i found one at Turner's outdoorsman 3 years ago for $600. Just love it. It can also shoot .38 super since its recessed it feels like a .22.

Model 28 was the first gun I was issued in NY as a PO in the early 70’s. Wish I could have bought it.I found out in the Police Academy that the cylinder was not indexing properly. Shaving lead and spraying the guys next to me. Range officer repaired it during lunch one day.

Just an FYI a string tie is called a Bolo Tie.

As a schoolkid in the 70'ies I worked extra in a gunshop. I was not old enough to buy a handgun. A good customer wanted a Mod. 28 with 4" barrel. We went through at least 10 guns in stock and picked the best one and put a custom stock on it. Fast forward app 15 years. In another gunshop I noticed the same Mod 28, recognised it by the custom stocks, in the used gun rack. The revolver was in almost unfired condition. I bought it on the spot. I still have it.

My father-in-law bought a Highway Patrolman (Model 28-2) in 1961. It's a beautiful piece in pristine condition (with the original box) ...his pride & joy.

Mod 28 5 screw if I believe was hand fitted and smooth trigger pull I own one and 27, my favorites the 28 . My 27 has 3 1/2 barrel like 👍 the FBI HAD . Way nicer blueing though . Great videos 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

My first revolver was a Model 28, 6 inch. Had to sell it years ago. Bought another last year. Best revolver I ever owned.

In these days of plastic “fantastics” it’s so refreshing to see stag/ bone grips I love the old Smiths Classy guns

I do so love it when you get a table full of revolvers out ! I know that it's going to be a great video as soon as I see them. That S&W looks a joy to shoot, seems to be 'spot on' for you my friend, what more could you ask for ? You've got reliability, accuracy and durability all in one gun, plus the perfect barrel length for an EDC gun, you can't get better than that !

Even tho revolvers I sure enjoy them! I have plenty modern day pistols but revolvers are just fun to shoot!

Boy 45, that compound make's me envy and that very cool table when those gun's are on it . The more the merrier !

The older model 19’s that came out in the late 50’s and early 60’s had a flat groove cut out on the bottom of the forcing cone to allow the crane to close while not catching on the forcing cone. But what S&W didn’t realize was it created a weaker spot in that gas compressed area where the forcing cone was a little thinner on the bottom. So to correct the issue S&W shaved off more metal on the crane so it would close nicely and not affect the size of the forcing cone on K frame revolvers like the model 66, new model 686’s and so on. Even all the knew .357 magnum K frame revolvers like Taurus model 66,65, and the tracker all have full size forcing cones and do not have a shaved bottom like the older S&W model 19’s did. You can shoot the fire out of all the new K frame .357 magnum revolvers with hot loads of 357 magnum all day long with no issues.

In 2009 I was lucky enough to find an unfired new-in-wooden-box S&W model 27-2 .357 magnum - I love the chekered topstrap and counterbored cylinders. Interesting to see the counterboring on both your pre-28 and model 19. That machining step disappeared in newer models, certainly by the 1980's.

My Dad managed to get a model 28 nickel plated highway patrolman with a 6 inch barrel and ivory handles. He managed to swap and trade for it back in '76, was made in '74 according to Smith and Wesson. I inherited it back in '99 when he passed. I'm 65 now and when I'm gone it will go to my son. As far as I'm concerned the 357 is the iconic pistol round of it's time and even now. Smith and Wesson really nailed it with the model 28 IMHO. I've shot colts and rugers, oh and a few other makes, but this 28 just holds a sweet spot in my heart.

I got a Highway Patrolman years ago at a gun show. It came with the original box and inside was not only the gun, but a card addressed to the original owner from a whole lot of folks, as it was apparently a gift, possibly for a retiree. It was so cool that I saved the card and have kept the gun and card together in the box. I really like the gun and it is a lot of fun to shoot. Thanks for sharing.

I just picked up a 28-2 in a trade recently with beautiful custom grips and after hearing about the glory days behind these firearms will be using it as my hunting sidearm and nightstand

My first handgun was sw model 28 highway patrolman arguably a nickel plated I think it was stainless model in 1983 pinned barrel very nice

I have a registered magnum. First ever made 357 magnum. They only made them from 1935-1939. Mine is a higher number and most likely made in late 38 early 39. They made less than 6500 and are worth a pretty penny. Almost unknown how many are left in existence

The S&W Highway Patrolman was 4" and 6" barrels which gave it a slightly lower price than the pre-Model 28 which was offered in several barrel lengths and had more finish and polish to it. This also made it very popular. (From an article in AR Dec 5, 2018)

The one person other than Bill Jordan that I've seen that can make a big S&W N-Frame look like a diminutive J-Frame in his hand! A 4" bbl Highway Patrolman was my first handgun and my first S&W. Years later, it went on to serve as my duty weapon when I became a LEO. I still have that gun, they'll have to bury it with me when my time comes.

I have my dad's old Model 28 HP Model. I love it. My granddaddy had a 1957 Model 29 I think he paid about $70 for it new. I remember him showing me replies that Skeeter had typed and signed personally (Circa 1965) they compared noted on their hand loads.

Pass up on one of those because of to much holster ware. But would still like one maybe one day.

The model 28 Highway Patrol was one of the first revolvers I have owned, I had a 6" & 4" in fact TEXAS DPS issued the Mdl 28. I had the MDL 27 also it had a 5 " Barrel.

My friends model 27-2 is my favorite revolver i have ever shot i actually like it more than my 686+ its a real piece of art and a sweet sweet shooter..

Colt's answer was at first the Trooper most of witch were 38 special but Colt started offering it in 357 magnum until they named a companion revolver as the 357. I have an early model 28 with an S prefix. The only deficiency I can see with S&W N frame 357s is that their cylinders are shorter than their and Colt's 357s but for my hot loads the Highway Patrolman is my go to gun.

I've got a old N frame model 27 357. Mag with a couple speed loaders nice trigger pull on it it's a dirty Harry 44 mag with a 357. Bore

Although not a magnum revolver or special I 'll never get rid of my 1953 S&W Regulation Police model in .38 s&w short caliber with its 4 in. pipe and as you say Hickok45 does quite well at pipe smoking and I just love the feel of the small I-frame that just was molded to my hand size !!!!

I had a model 520 S&W made for the NY state police which was a N-frame in .357 mag with fixed sights and 4" barrel. Hickok 45 might have liked that one with fixed sights but I traded it away. I used it for police combat course and my back up while hunting.

Just bought my first revolver, a 686 plus with 2-1/2 barrel…can’t wait to pick it up!

Missed opportunity to remember the pioneering work done by the great Elmer Keith on the .357,.41 and 44 Magnum cartridges and his push for large frame revolvers capable of handling them. "Sixguns" by Keith is a must have read,fascinating detail on revolvers,sights,grips,bullets,long range revolver shooting and some of the characters he knew who were real gunfighters.

We have the 28-2 Highway Patrolman with a 6'' barrel. Early 80's. A lot off trigger work and very stable accurate gun. Also have the 19-4. Number 1 of 865 commemorative run. 1978. Target trigger and combat hammer. High polish blueing 4'' barrel. No guessing on the hammer drop and smooth as silk. Very accurate bu hold on tight as it does kick. I shoot hot load .38's with it. An absolute joy. Some will say it shouldn't be used. Sorry guys. I gotta do it.

Last year, a 4” 28-2 from the estate of 3-time Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Unser was sold at auction…I missed it by this much! 🏁

According to my S&W catalog they actually did make some 8-3/8” model 28’s, but VERY few.

love my Highway patrolman , up there with my pre 10 M&P, people think the barrel has been replaced since the bluing is lighter than the frame, maybe part of the cost cutting to meet a price that police depts would pay for?

It's normal for any steel revolver to get a different hue/bluing on as the decades go by.

I love my 1957 pre 28 Highway Patrolman 6 inch barrel 4 screw, just had it at the gun range today!
