Rio de Janeiro, aka just Rio, and São Paulo often called SP
The two largest cities in Brazil. Heck, with a metropolitan area population of 21.3 million people, São Paulo is the largest Portuguese speaking city in the world, the second largest city in the entire Southern Hemisphere and 12th largest in the world overall. It’s actually part of an even bigger São Paulo Macrometropolis, which has about 31.5 million people. Geez. Rio de Janeiro, with a metropolitan area population of 13 million people, is the fourth largest city in the Southern Hemisphere and 37th largest city in the world.
About 437 km, or 272 miles apart, or a five and a half hour drive by car, the Brazilian government recently postponed plans to build a $9 billion high speed rail line connecting the two cities that would reduce the trip to just 80 minutes because it would cost...you know…$9 billion.
Don’t be fooled...even though they seem to be hiding down there in the southeast corner of Brazil, both are megacities that dominate the economy and culture of the entire country. Both are near the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Ok, well Rio is right on the coast, and SP is about an hour from it.
Rio de Janeiro is the capital city of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Well hey what a coincidence because São Paulo is the capital city of the state of São Paulo.
Citizens in Rio are often called Cariocas, while citizens of São Paulo are often called Paulistanos or Paulistanas.
Both cities are located in the rugged area known as the Brazilian Highlands, an area filled with cliffs, large hills, and mountains. Both are near the Serra do Mar, a system of mountain ranges that go along the coast.

    Fun fact: Sao Paulo and Rio are so influent that basically all Brazilian media services come from there ( major TV networks, shows, music etc). Because of that, most of the cultural content in Brazil is produced in the Sao Paulo and Rio accents, which make these accents the closest of a "standard Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation" that we have. That also means that almost everyone in the country knows SP/Rio slangs and expressions while many people from SP and Rio may not know much about other Brazilian regional slangs

  • @Jolgeable

    @Jolgeable

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm from São Paulo and I know a lot of slang/expressions from other places, maybe because I live on the outskirts, where there are a lot of people from other states. And what other states know about SP is generally what I call São Paulo from TV, which is a small cut taking into account the size of the city. Even the accent that is considered typical of the city is actually an accent typical of wealthy areas. And it is good to remember that São Paulo is called a rich city, but it is a Brazilian city, that is, it is unequal. When TV takes a more elitist approach, it erases most of the city.

    @@tadeua6652 First of all, you should learn that this is not a polite or social accepted way to disagree with someone’s idea or comment, and stop saying this kind of thing in a such wonderful channel like Mr.Beats’. Also, you should go back to high school to learn how to understand a point or to develop a way to, I don’t know, read and understand correctly what is written above before saying things. The point of comparing cities, countries and regions is to show that even though they are different, there are some things that may bring them together, and others that differentiate each other. That is the beautiful thing about cultures, people, countries and cities: we have a lot of things that look like the same, but our tiny little differences are what keep us unique in the world. About the ‘third world country’' thing, the tone set by your comment shows that being a third world country is a shame for you. Yes, we have our problems and we are far from perfection, but I don’t take it as a reason to be ashamed by our country or as an insult. Being a Brazilian is the most wonderful thing in the world. Our people grind each day, with happiness and love. We are kind to people, we are always trying to help. We have a mixed country. People from other countries came here to find a place to live and they found a place to love and call home. And stop writing useless things on the internet, because all of other countries may think that everyone in our country lacks intelligence just like you do. You are just looking like a fool, or maybe you are one. P.S: Sorry, Mr. Beats, for this little discussion. I just can’t stand people talking negative or pejorative things about my beloved land.

    Eu sinceramente não entendo de onde surgiu e muito menos o porquê dessa rivalidade, se fulano prefere ou gosta mais de SP ou RJ, ou não gosta de um deles ou até de nenhum, é só uma opinião pessoal, realmente não sei o porquê das pessoas se importarem tanto com esse tipo de opinião 💁

    - The chosen images of sao paulo were the worst possible. Sao Paulo is a cosmopolitan city and this aesthetic has not been shown. - Sao Paulo's economy is much bigger than Rio de Janeiro's. If the states are compared, the difference is even greater

    Great video, really enjoyed it! As someone who's lived in both of these cities for several years, I can say you're pretty spot on! To answer your question, both are great but Rio in my opinion is better, provided you can live in a decent area near the beach. São Paulo is a concrete jungle and the nearest beach is at least 45min away. However, I do miss the street art and the amazing food. In the end, it depends on which type of city you prefer. If your preference is to live in a city like Miami, then Rio is where you want to go; if the hustle and bustle of New York City is what you crave, then there's no better place than São Paulo. Thanks again for making this...valeu amigo!

    If you ever go to Rio, be sure not to miss Petropolis. It's a Hapsburg royal town surrounded by lush tropical forest, up the hills an hour from Rio. It just might be one of the World's best kept tourism secrets (not so well kept, as Elisabeth Bishop and Stephan Zweig have lived there).

    Rio que é o coração. Como você mesma disse, todos falam do Rio lá fora. Quando pensam em Brasil, a imagem que vem é a do Rio e da cultura carioca. Sem falar que mesmo economicamente SP só superou Rio tem uns 30 anos em todos os mais de 500 anos de história do Brasil por conta de "n" questões como apos a criação de Brasília eles não terem cumprido com o acordo de deixar o RJ como uma cidade-estado autonoma (o que faria inevitavelmente ao Rio ser declarada como segunda capital junto com Brasília - assim como Moscou e São Petersburgo), o que criou um Estado sem identidade e ingovernável (pq a união do Estado a cidade foi forçada pela ditadura militar), entrando em decadencia, quebrando a bolsa de valores da cidade e junto com uma preferência por SP quanto a perdão de dividas e a lógica neoliberal que intensificou a partir da redemocratização (o que ajuda muito mais SP e prejudica muito mais o Rio). São Paulo é a capital financeira, mas não o representante (que dá o sentido de "coração"). Eu nunca vi nenhum brasileiro chamando São Paulo assim kkkk só se for paulista mesmo. Até pq "tudo corre aqui" não é verdade. O Rock in Rio que é um evento mundial é do rio, o templo do futebol é do rio, os ritmos mais conhecidos são do rio, a única olimpíada na América do Sul foi no rio, mega eventos são no rio (eco92, rio+20, panamericano...).

    @@g.araujo1043 Nope, massifs are mostly igneous, they are pieces of the continental crust that retain their internal geological structure when dislocated due to, most of the time, divergent tectonic movement. Imagine a block that goes up when the pressure is relieved from the crust. Mountains are frequently associated with convergent tectonic movement, and presents a series of unique geophysical characteristics, including folds, metamorphism, volcanism, and more complex features. Imagine a block that goes "smoosh" under pressure and turns into a completely different material. I've studied geology in my undergraduate program for about 4 years and that's a common misconception when it comes to geomorphological structures.
