David Soto, also known as Daso, was raised in the Lower East Side of New York City and Puerto Rico, navigating between two worlds: community activism and the arts movement, and a Caribbean tropical paradise. He was raised by a mother inspired by Puerto Rican Traditional Dance, who used her talents to engage youth in a community with very few resources. This upbringing took place during the renaissance of the Nuyorican Music and Arts movement, a time marked by the birth of many organizations focused on housing, poetry, art, and music. This vibrant environment became the foundation of David's existence.
Years later, David continued this legacy through his musical endeavors, organizing efforts, and activism. Recognizing that he was part of an extraordinary experience, he began exploring ways to document his journey, which he believes is a powerful chapter in Puerto Rican history. This narrative not only encompasses his life but also chronicles the migration, struggle, and resilience of a creative people who use their art to change the world.
We helped Daso create this proof of concept to raise funds that not only tells his story but also raises the question: Do you have to suffer to create art?
