President Paul Kagame Interview on Reinventing Rwanda: ‘Nothing is Impossible to Achieve’

KNOWLEDGE@WHARTON ARCHIVES: Rwandan President Paul Kagame is widely credited with guiding the nation’s economic and social transformation following the devastating 1994 genocide. Rwanda has defied expectations and emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in the world, overcoming the many obstacles involved with being a small, land-locked nation in the middle of Sub-Saharan Africa.
The economy has grown by an average of nearly 8% a year since President Kagame was elected to office in 2000. By 2015, per capita income in Rwanda had more than tripled during the 14 years prior; more than one million people have moved out of poverty; infant mortality rates have been cut by two-thirds; and Rwanda has achieved nearly universal access to primary and secondary education.
Wharton management professor Katherine Klein, interviewed President Kagame in front of a large audience when he recently visited the University of Pennsylvania campus.
Klein, who also is the Vice Dean of the Wharton Social Impact Initiative, asked Kagame about Rwanda’s difficult and complex transformation since the 1994 genocide. Kagame reviewed his vision for the future, discussed policy priorities, responded to criticism that his administration has repressed free speech and political dissent, and explored how Rwanda became a global leader in gender equality.

After spending several weeks in Rwanda, I salute this great man and all the people of Rwanda. You rose from such a devastating tragedy, and have solved or are on the path to solving many of the problems that have held back post-colonial Africa. God bless Paul Kagame, God bless Rwanda.

I always don't understand what these western so called democrats mean to Africa. The presenter has told us great stories about how Rwanda has managed to move it's people and economy from poverty. In the next line they brand Kagame with all sorts poor governance. So what should come first. Democracy with poverty or growth and sustainable with minimal so called democracy.

The U.S. and Canada (to a lesser degree, but still) are run by special interest groups, Political Action Committees (PACs) and Big Business so is that your definition of 'democracy'? Your leaders are selected well in advance, arguably the exercise of elections and voting is purely a farce meant to give you the masses the illusion of 'freedom' and 'democracy'. If you don't have big money or are not a member of the wealthy class, which is the overwhelming majority of your people, you are likely entirely disposable... but they'll have you believe different, again, to keep you placated.

The many interviews shows he is monitored by his master. No good leader. There are improvements in Rwanda but for how long. Check what they did to zimbabwe. Mugabe was their darling but how did it end when he began to be the African leader we want.
