Zehao The ending though with the scorpion sting and he says "that's unfortunate" maybe it works on him too. Being crippled and out of commission is arguably worse then being dead. Plus now he's given all his information away and its confirmed he's as good as Salem's council of evil but not as strong as Salem. Qrow suddenly looks like an expendable character.

Tyrian is an excellent and seasoned fighter, him not seeing the weak point in the wooden beam would be considered bad luck because it's not something he would usually fuck up

That' why it was bad luck, this guy is hyper aware of his surroundings, he can deflect bullets that he isn't even looking at, dodge and defeat two fighters coming at him from the back, etc. normally he would have looked around before and realized that broken beam.

Also, as has been pointed out a few times on the RT website. That whole bit with Qrow Punching Tyrian is a tip of the hat to Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood's Final Fight

2:26: Thats arguable. There's speculation about Tyrian being blind: he couldn't see Qrow get his weapon until he actually touched it and made a loud, vibrating noise, which real life scoprions would need to hear him. Thats why he hears most weapon attacks.

what i meant was, Tyrian can only sense them whilst they have their weapons on them. I also checked and it turns out that scorpions, in nature, have biologically different eyes to humans, as they can't see anything but vague colours, but can feel sound vibrations and the like. This leads me to believe that he sees the Aura they're emitting from their weapon. on the plus side, scorpions don't grow back their tails so Tyrian's stinger is gone for good. Of course, since he's part human all i said about scorpions could go out the window, but they're interesting facts to consider.

Point Blank His semblance doesn't effect him, it effects everyone else. Their is an anime that follows a similar premise to Qrow's semblance. It's called Good Luck Girl. Good things always happen to her but at the cost of bad luck for everyone else, if she stays too close to someone her power will constantly ruin the others life until she goes away or they die. Her "Good Luck" power can never be turned off and is only cancelled out because a Jinx follows her around so Constant fortune against Constant Misfortune means her powers don't work. If she does have the power to give good luck to others then Qrow's powers are cancelled around her.

Qrow must have a lot of "To Be Continued" moments

Ruby specifically shot Nora to empower her Semblance, she wasn't aiming for Tyrian. The deflections aren't bad luck, just Tyrian's skill.

Her first shot missed and alerted Tyrian was most likely Qrow's semblance. The following shots failed to connect because Tyrian was alerted to the danger by the first missed shot.

When the beam was about to fall on Ruby during the Tyrian vs Qrow fight, it was directly after Ruby said, "This is my fight too!" and Qrow sounded a little concerned replying with, "It's not that.". Immediately after he said that, that's when the beam decided to want to fall over. While re-watching that moment, when Tyrian kicked Ruby back, there was no way the force of her hitting the ground (no special forces were in that blow or landing or anything mind you) shifted it; the beam seemed relatively fine despite all the fighting and just suddenly broke off and fell over? Yes, it looks like another beam pushed it, but even if that was the case it was sudden as well given how it could have done that at any other time before (assuming all the fighting moved that specific one which doesn't seem to be the case necessarily), but as soon as Ruby is under it, boom. That was more than a coincidence after seeing EP 8 and then thinking back to that moment...that's just my thoughts. It's fun analyzing these things whether right or wrong. I wonder if there really were legitimate hints beforehand. Knowing Rooster Teeth, it's highly possible.

Turns out that it wasn't really like that after all. I feel bad about his semblance though because he's a really good person but he brings misfortune to others. I wonder how that went when he was a student at the academy.

And to cap it all off, if you listen to the music just after Qrow slices the beam, it's saying "I'm your bad luck charm", making it all but explicit.

Raven is good luck? You know, that would explain why she only saves people once. Someone with that kind of fortune would almost certainly get sick of people trying to mooch off her semblance.

Well, Qrow and Raven WERE taken in by a clan of bandits at a presumably young-ish age, something I doubt the average bandit group would do... Unless either the then leader was kind, OR if the orphan siblings were extremely useful somehow, like, idk... Being able to give their allies good luck (Raven), while being able to give their enemies bad luck (Qrow). Learning how to fight like true huntsmen would also be pretty handy for the tribe's secret weapons (hence why they went to Beacon), and with all the successful raids over the years, they'd probably be able to afford it. However if this is the case... Then that means being to turn into black birds aka "Branwen" (which if I'm not mistaken can mean crows OR ravens) would be some sort of hereditary magic-esque thing, similar to Summer and Ruby's Silver Eyes (considering how important eyes are to this series, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Qrow and most likely Raven's shapeshifting has something to do with their eyes.) And if the above paragraph holds true, wouldn't that mean Yang would have at least the potential to inherit that trait? Considering when she gets pissed her eyes resemble her mother's? And if so, what kind of bird will she be able to turn into? Will it be another black bird? Or will it be a Pheonix? I say Pheonix, because there's a Chinese type of Pheonix that's basically a sun-dragon-bird, and Yang Xiao Long IS a "sunny little dragon" after all... ;)

Oh bother, not everything can be attributed to Qrows bad luck. The virus was programmed to infect anything it came in-contact with. If my phone had a virus and i connected it to my computer, the virus would automatically transfer. It would continue from both devices to any others that it could infect. Also, I highly doubt semblances can effect how electronic devices work. It they were to break, maybe. But make them do something? I doubt that. The inngirl screamed because she saw someone walk through a portal of black/red mist. That's not a matter of luck. that's just fear of what she saw.

may be true, but he was taken into i pirating tribe and were raised/trained to survive with his sister, who her semblance is supposedly good luck, so that means they must have been together their whole life until he abandoned their tribe, when he was mature and experienced in combat/survival until he met ozpin, and apparently his semblance has a certain radious that's short-mid range soo...

Okay, some semblances are cool like Pyrrhas or Blakes. But Qrows semblance literally passively affects the course of the world around him. You can just look at it as his "fate" but really it's his semblance at work, bending reality so that everyone is getting fucked equally. I'd count that as probably the semblance with the most power so far.

I completely believe Raven's could be luck just from the bartender in that scene. "Lucky you." And Qrow has an attitude like: "luck, sure.. that's what it is." Though it's an extremely small detail, I feel like it's true that Raven's is luck.

PCBangBros I believe her proper semblance is portal making. The luck could be a latent affect. Like how Qrow's semblance is likely turning into a crow, and a side-effect is bad luck. That's what I feel.

I just re-watched Episode 7 of Volume 4 and noticed something you missed. Of course, I could be wrong and this was nothing to do with his semblance, but I thought it was worth mentioning: When Ruby fires at Tyrian, she completely misses and hits the ground instead. There'd be no reason for her to intentionally miss Tyrian, so the only thing I can figure is that Qrow's bad luck affected the bullet and caused it to miss its target.

The Lyric Man If something was able to scratch Ruby's scope, then it's likely that the scope became misaligned, which caused the shot to miss: the rifle barrel is not parallel with the reticle of the scope.

wouldn't ruby's scope clearly wasn't cracked/misaligned before the fight, given how much she loves her weapon. meaning it must have happened during the fight, A.K.A qrow's semblance might have caused the damage to her scope, resulting in her shot missing.

It was confirmed by Rooster teeth that he isn't her dad. But you don't have to share blood to have a connection or be soul mates. I would love it if it Qrow was ruby's dad but then that would make Ruby and Yang cousins instead of sisters so I'll just adore the fact that Qrow loves Ruby even if she isn't related to him by blood. It's a lot more meaningful because Qrow being her dad would mean he never was around to truly raise her (which makes sense because of the bad luck and would make it more tragic that he could have caused summers death but still, way too sad)

You missed the fact that when Raven disappears into her portal, Qrow's bad luck comes back and the waiter lady drops the glass, smashing it.

I think the waitress was just hitting on Qrow, which is why she gave him top shelf

You could also speculate that Tyrian landing the tail-graze on him was his semblance affecting Ruby- getting your dad/uncle poisoned is very unlucky indeed.

i feel like most of those were streatches the glass breaking, the wood falling are the only ones i consider bad luck the ones i consider might be a case by speculation are the winter, and the ironwood but the nora/ren and tyrian ones are too far out there. bad luck is different from bad things happening in general due to ren and noras fighting ability vs tyrrians

I don't know, maybe because he was in the heat of battling Qrow, someone he actually takes note of knowing their name, and calling him a 'true huntsmen' why would he divert his attention from an opponent like that in anticipation at that exact moment that they were close to him while he was firing his guns that clearly masked their footsteps of running up to him?

he is a scorpion, arachnids in general have a good sense of those around him. and its not like they were treading lightly, ren and nora were running up to him, not only that, but tyrrian was standing still, if tyrrian does have scorpion-like senses, he could probably tell they were there by vibrations

That does make sense, and I completely forgot about the fact that the RWBY manga is 100% cannon, and in the manga it did say that Faunus have superhuman abilities, it could have been it could not have been, there's enough evidence for both, so let's leave it at that.

As far as the speculations with Tyrian, I don't think that was Qrow's semblance, I think that was his... I believe Tyrian's semblance gives him the ability to sense incoming attacks. During V4E6, nobody on Team RNJR even managed to touch Tyrian. All of their attacks were either dodged or blocked, even Nora's semblance-enhanced surprise attack! During V4E7, same thing during almost then entire fight with Qrow. Plus, when Ren and Nora tried to attack him from behind, he knew they were coming before they even got close! And when Ruby tried sniping him, he blocked (almost) every shot without even looking! I think his semblance gives him a sort of 6th sense that tells him who's about to attack, where they're attacking from, and what they're attacking with. But here's the catch... He can only sense weapon-based attacks. If they're using a weapon, his semblance effects them. If not, he's as blind as everyone else. I think you know what brought me to this conclusion: when Qrow lost his sword and resorted to using his fists, Tyrian was pathetic! He put up about as much of a fight as a member of the 5th grade chess team, and even acted like he was defeated for a moment. But the very moment Qrow grabbed his sword again, Tyrian immediately got his second wind. Why? Because he got his advantage back! The part with Qrow going hand-to-hand was the first of two times when someone got the jump on Tyrian. The second time was when Ruby cut off Tyrian's stinger. But hold on, if Tyrian can sense attacks with weapons, why was Ruby able to catch him off guard with her scythe? Because... his aura was depleted. It's never really been said in the series, but I think it's been established that a hunstman/huntress can't use their semblance when their aura is depleted (except for Qrow apparently, but he already said his NEVER turns off). I can imagine that someone as reckless and wild as Tyrian has been shown to be would grow to use his semblance as a crutch. So when he couldn't use his semblance and was stinging Qrow, he left himself wide open with no means of defence. I could easily be wrong, but I feel this would all make sense. Ever since the season premier of Volume 4, I saw Salem's inner circle and thought "Cinder is a maiden and is said to have near limitless power. What makes these other guys so special that they'd be ranked equal to her?" I still don't know as far as Watts and Hazel. But if I'm right, I now understand for Tyrian. Sure he may have a hole in his bag of marbles, but when you're an incredibly skilled fighter who can poison his enemies and basically has ESP, I'd also want that guy on my side!

Qrow's semblance could be why he left the 'tribe'. On the other hand, if Raven really brings good luck, maybe that"s why she's now the leader of the 'tribe'. Good luck could really be useful for bandits like them.

bringing good luck and bad luck on others is two-sided coin when it comes to daily life. as Qrow mentioned, it hurts those he cares about, but is of great benefit to him in a fight. with good luck, the opposite is true. Raven's tribe benefits from her good luck, but direct conflicts for her have the odds against her at all times.

Qrow genuinely seems to want to make a positive change in the world, fighting on behalf of the light, scouting against Salem's forces, doing everything he can against the forces of darkness, and yet his semblance is bad luck. No reason Raven can't have one of good luck and still be darker than her brother

It also makes sense because, I don't know where it's pulled from, but it's from the same tradition that Crows are signs of bad luck, Ravens are signs of good luck.

I looked it up and apparently in Greek mythology, ravens were considered a symbol of good luck

Qrow is my favorite character in RWBY due to the fact that he acts like a father towards Ruby. He defends Ruby using himself as a shield and watches over her even though Ruby and the group doesn't know it until now. He is the father that makes everything funny and tells funny stories from his teenage years. And finally he's a dad that makes you feel better about everything. TBH I think Qrow is Ruby's true dad but he's gave Ruby to Tai instead because of the bad luck Semblance he has and didn't want her to get hurt or die because of him being around her.

It's a possibility. Raven leaves Tai with a small daughter and Summer is pregnant with Ruby. Qrow tells Summer he doesn't want to be a dad because of his semblance and suggest she raises the two kids with Tai as a happy family. Yang being a small girl doesn't get or remember all the details of this change and they quickly form the family bond.

I've actually always assumed this will be revealed at some point. She has absolutely no common traits with Tai or Yang.

yea, even i stuff like that...if i was a character in rwby, i'd have a qrow persona, but my semblance would be a Nightstalker (destiny reference)

Raven being good luck does make sense because Raven's symbolize good luck. It would make sense but you would think it should be the other way around.

That could be it yeah. If so, I wonder who else has access to dust like that as she's the only one seen to use it. If not dust based, must be her semblance though

I'm really digging the idea of Raven's semblance being good luck - the Yin to his YANG.

Anyone notice that during a good portion of these instances of bad luck, right around the time that the bad luck happens there's the sound of wind? All Semblances have their own unique sound, so maybe the answer, dear friends, is blowing in the wind.

When Tyrian block Qrow's strike and a building got damaged might be one as well. Unless Qrow is just that strong

True but the damage caused during the fight between him and Winter were dues to the weapons. Of course he was holding back. Idk, but you're right it could just reflect his strength

It doesn't make sense that Ruby cutting Tyrian's tail or Tyrian getting the upper hand on Ren and Nora being because of his semblance. The former is very clearly a case of Tyrian getting injured for over extending, and the former is no different from when RNJR were being schooled in the v4e6 fight. Qrow said his semblance is a bad luck charm, which probably means that it just affect's probability. What were the odds that the beam would fall right when Ruby was under it? What were the odds that Tyrian would land a rotted beam that would snap under his weight? Those kinds of stuff, basically.

Benjamin Folk-Sullivan The thing about Tyrian's tail getting cut is that it's show through the whole fight that he is more than fast enough to avoid Ruby's attack and kick her ass for it. Just didn't seem to react to such a blatant mistake one time. Secondly, what are the chances that he just happened to swing his head backwards to see Ren and Nora attack while he's in the middle of a fight? Qrow's semblance seems to effect everyone around him for the worst... except Qrow himself.

Tyrian misses an easy direct sting, he also somehow leaves an opening large enough for bitchass Ruby to cut his tail off, despite being in enough fights to know better and having shown in that very fight to have extremely acute perception and speed, allowing him to dodge nearly everything. Ruby was also in his line of sight. But he just so happens to miss her completely and allow his tail to get lopped off.

Nice work on this.

I am so glade that you separated scenes that could definitely be classified as Qrow's semblance from things which might of otherwise been explainable via other means.

Thought it was pretty bad luck when ruby destroyed him in bird form Vol1.

Firstly I'm pretty sure Raven's semblance is portals. Secondly I don't think Ruby cutting off Tyrians tail was due to his semblance. My theory is to do with Ruby's silver eyes. The whole series has been riding the theme of "the world isn't a fairytail" hard as fuck. I think Ruby exists to defy that expectation. Hence her dialogue with Blake at the start of the show, her victory against all odds versus Neo and Roman, her deus ex machina of cinder, ect.

But the Silver Eyes only affect the Grimm and the Maidens.... Tyrian is neither of them. Besides, it probably is Qrow's semblance, with the speed he shows he could easily have got Qrow with his sting and taken Ruby before anybody could react.

jonathino001 Not necessarily. As we've seen it can only affect a single person at a time, see Winter and Ironwood, people in groups, but the only ones affected by Qrow's bad luck.

Thanks for this. I've been trying to think of examples of bad luck before v4 and all I could come up with was the bartender and *maybe* Winter. Also, I appreciate how you separated the obvious examples from the looser or more speculative ones. I also like your idea for Raven's semblance. It doesn't sound like it fits her character, but we haven't really seen much of her yet to make claims. I'm curious to see if it holds up.

A couple longshots, but overall good video! I'm pretty sure that the beginning of Qrow v. Winter where he dodges all of her strikes is related to his semblance as well.

This is a really good compilation! Seeing the scenes like this kind of helps flesh out Qrow's character. To be fair, Winter and Qrow fighting wasn't exactly subtle. I doubt Ironwood showing up was a matter of chance. The others make a lot of sense, though.

I really like how you offer alternate possibilities than just assuming everything involving Qrow happens because of his Semblance.

1, it's been theorized that Raven's semblance is passive like Qrow, except it's Death, not bad luck, and not good luck either. 2, I think another small instance of Qrow's semblance is in the bar scene. Just before Raven leaves, the lamp on the next table goes out. I think both of them were standing still too. This could be a metaphor for either of their semblance since fire represents life, and obviously darkness being bad luck.

I can't believe I never questioned the part where Ironwood was totally ignorant to a giant fricken griffon behind him. It was making noises and everything. Also interesting theory on Raven's semblance. Seems plausible given that their surname can mean "blessed (insert corvid here)".

excellent compilation. Also, this is jsut me, but i always assumed Qrow told Ruby to stay away because her aura had failed when Tyrian kicked the hell out of her last chapter. So I always took it as "Stay back-" because if you get hit one more time it could be fatal.... right? Still, these are great points! Very nicely edited vid. I especially liked the little count down timer you did to the moment itself

Maybe that's why him and Tai are always butting heads: his semblance may have gotten Ruby's mother killed.

This is why I like Qrow as a character I always liked him ever since he first appeared his nonchalant and calm yet sarcastic nature and further more the complexity of his not only his character but his semblance is what makes Qrow such a great character in RWBY

I would count the random explosions. For example, when Qrow fought Winter and his eyes gleamed. He missed, but there was a giant hole in the ground afterward. Also, when Qrow fought Tyrian, a random house in the background got destroyed.

The house in the background was destroyed because of the force of their weapons colliding.

It all came full circle with that last clip

It's really hard to pinpoint something like this in fights, but the attention drawn to the crack in the ceiling seems intentional. Also his introductory scene showing the glass break cannot be a coincidence, which is a clever detail and is an actual legit case of foreshadowing. Like you don't see that kind of subtlety in this show.

Ah wow that "lucky you" comment makes so much more sense now

Who here can't wait for all the answer to come at us in a long but enjoyable way through a lot of episodes and awesome fight scenes

looking back at the Ironwood one, I remember a Grimm was about to get the drop on Glenda as well before Qrow flys in impaling the Grimm. That must be tough for Qrow having to constantly keep an eye out for his friends on the battlefield because even the most seasoned veterans could run into some bad luck when he's around, he has to constantly protect people from his own semblance, no wonder he had to get so good.

I get the feeling that having awareness of things behind him is just part of Tyrian's fighting style. It looked like a trained motion rather than lucky accident.
