RWBY: Qrow's Semblance Did Not Influence Clovers Death - Luck Semblances Explained

Qrow's semblance of Misfortune can cause many bad things to happen around him but the act that caused Clover's death was not influenced by Qrow's semblance, nor would having Good Fortune active have prevented Clover from dying. Luck semblances affect the probability of random chance associated with the outcomes of actions taken around or by the Semblance user and the actions Tyrian took didn't have much potential for a random outcome when he killed Clover. That's my thinking anyways and I would love to hear yours in the comments below!

I believe that as well due to “same semblances” existing. This is due to even with as creative as semblances are(/can be) we know there’s theoretically going to be ones with similar-same abilities. Our first example is Juane/Coco who both have aura amplification semblances, one needing a person the other simply having godly object enhancing skills. It could be possibly for them to both enhance a person’s body to insane durability and strength through skin, muscle and bone augmentation through different means (coco enhancing their physical body, and Juane juicing them so much their body just has to put all that aura somewhere). Example 2 would be Blake’s relationships… I’m not joking, her type “punk badass with a counter-semblance”. Through different means, both Yang and Adam can both unleash devastating strength through absorbing damage. 3 is a line from Harriet being her referencing other speed quirks before. The implications of this line implies not just 1 or 2 but enough to know that Ruby’s isn’t just “speed”. And of course the ace-ops show 2 limb enhancing semblances with roots and vines respectively. This gets even more common if we consider Sun and Blake have their own aura projections with Sun’s and Blake’s being more solid and Blake’s being a solid illusionary type. This gets even weirder when you consider that Sun’s and Blake’s specifically share similarities with the Schnee family’s SUMMONS

If that were the case then it would be very poetic but, in my opinion, it wouldn't make much sense. Whatever action you are taking there is a good outcome, as in beneficial for you or for someone you care about, and a bad outcome, as in the opposite of what i said. From what we've seen it seems that Qrow's semblance acts in the way that it bends the odds in favor of a bad outcome, sometimes for him, sometimes for his enemies. So that would line up with your point in the way that when bad things happen to his enemies someone would consider that to be good fortune, but he still chooses to refer to it as misfortune. That isn't the case for Clover though, in the sense that from what we've seen he only brings good fortune to himself and his allies. There wasn't an instance where Clover brought good luck to an enemy, and no, disarming Qrow and his weapon being picked up by Tyrian was not good fortune for Tyrian because wheter or not he had Qrow's weapon the result wouldn't have changed, he would have still killed Clover with his stinger or one of his own weapons. That is why I say that Clover's semblance is definitely good fortune, and as we've seen it only affects him. During the poker match between Qrow and Clover, Clover won 5 hands in a row if I recall correctly, so that means that his semblance never had an effect on Qrow, but only on himself. On that note now I'm thinking about the fact that Qrow's bad luck never actually targeted him. It was only ever targeted to someone other than him, wheter it was Tyrion, Ruby, Clover, even Winter Schnee when they fought and then general Ironwood came, that was bad luck for Winter. So my personal conclusions after thing monologue are that: Qrow's semblance brings bad luck to random people around him, but never directly to himself. Instead Clover's semblance brings good fortune to him and to him only. thanks for coming to my TEDtalk

how unlucky of Clover that his aura broke by Qrow's punch, but, oh, what an opportunity for Tyrian to use Qrow's disregarded weapon, it was easier than just use his semblance to bypass Clover's aura. Qrow choose to not take his weapon in order to surprise-punch Clover, but, ultimately, Tyrian is a good tactictian and opportunist in not-clear, full of emotions, unfair fights. but let's face it, even if Clover's aura didn't break, Tyrian would use again his semblance (he tried once already in the fight) to kill Clover in order to blame Qrow and make more chaos among enemies of Salem, because those are his desires - to create chaos and serve his goddess.

While Clover being stabbed doesn't directly result from Qrow's misfortune, you could consider Clover being in that position and turning his back in the first place to be a part of Qrow's semblance, or that Qrow's sword ended up near Tyrian after he was disarmed, that Qrow was even disarmed in the first place, in fact almost any hit in that fight could have been influenced by either one's semblance, leading to the outcome we got in smaller ways.

don't forget about the misfortune of hitting a vital organ. I know that Tyrian is a skilled assassin/killer and certainly knows where to stab someone to kill them, think about how unlucky it was for Qrow/Clover that Tyrian's hand didn't slip and miss an organ or artery, or that the bleeding was that fast, or that support was too far away Etc... luck is a fickle thing, almost everything can be explained by it.

A pre-existing lack of situational awareness made Clover's death possible. It was arguably foreshadowed in episode 3. So reliant on his semblance of good fortune, Clover didn't and likely never really had to worry about situational awareness being a thing. And its clearly demonstrated that the Ace Ops are tunnel-visioned on their orders and nothing else. Qrow is not responsible directly. Yes, this was a battle between them but it was Ironwood's orders that sparked the initial confrontation. The situation then devolved into something less and less favorable for his position, so Qrow was forced into taking more drastic measures to achieve his outcome. It became equally apparent that Clover was not interested in discussing things unless Qrow was in irons due to said orders. So when Qrow declared that James would take the fall for Clover's death, its rightfully placed since that was the ignition point. I also think that Luck semblances are based on perception. Qrow is negative, critical and cynical - therefore bad luck. Clover was optimistic, upbeat and positive - therefore good luck.

As a professional huntsman he should have captured Tyrian when he had the chance. Yes, i agree that Tyrian was the cause of Clovers death but i cant let it slide that Qrow just went out of the aircraft knowing very well that Tyrian, a psychopathic mass murderer was right beside him (the scene before they crashed). Did he just assume that tyrian was dead? If so why would he not check for pulse? Something, or tie him up at least. Qrow, i love you. He actively killed himself and removed the only fair chance he had of taking Tyrian down again and clearly over judged his abilities. Which I thought that whole thing was painful out of character. I understand subduing Qrow after the fight, but knock the MURDER HOBO CHARACTER OUT OF THE MATCH FIRST. Love clover until that moment, he had it coming second he stopped Qrow from attacking Tyrian. I've longed believed the theory of probability informing how the luck semblances worked. That's what makes The alley fight AND the crash with Robin, Qrow, Clover, and Tyrian fight so crazy. Their semblances created increasing chaotic outcomes even in the fight between Qrow, Clover, and Tyrian. However, I do slightly disagree with your theory in that I think both of their semblance did have an affect in the WAY that Clover died. Here are my major points: 1.) If we go with the theory that Clover's semblance works the same as Qrow, than Clover's semblance made sure that Qrow punch was lucky enough to break his. 2.) Qrow's semblance didn't make Tyrian kill Clover, but it did effect the outcome. It kept Tyrian, a lifelong and talent serial killer, from not instantly killing Clover. 3.) Qrow's semblance made Clover have bad luck by not allowing him to die instantly, bleeding out in the snow, and having to see his best friend cry because he wasn't paying attention. 4.) It denied Tyrian his proper fight by making sure the fight dragged on long enought that he Atlas military arrived. Not blaming, Qrow he didn't kill him, but his ability just made everyone suffer a little more.

The only thing that Qrow is responsible for in Clover's death was Tyrian's breakout, when Robyn's arrow or Clover's hook (I don't remember which it was) broke the thing Tyrian's handcuffs were tied. The rest is only Tyrian's will.

PoTato Head PokéMario Qrow didn’t, though. He never responds to Tyrian’s request of alliance, and even though it’s a little tough to see due to how the camera is moving, in the next shot we can still see Qrow moving to attack Tyrian before getting attacked in the back by Clover. The only time (to my memory, so I may be wrong) that Qrow attacks Clover without being forced to by Clover attacking him, is at the end of the fight, when Qrow believes that Tyrian’s already down for the count. Tyrian was helping Qrow stay in the fight basically the whole time, but Qrow never directly tried to help Tyrian in return. Clover basically killed himself by not allowing Qrow to focus on defeating Tyrian, and especially when he disarmed Qrow.

My thought was that Qrow's semblance could have negatively affected Clover's death by increasing the odds that his sword pierced vital organs, but the chances of that happening were already really high because of how good Tyrian is, and Clover probably would have died of blood loss before help arrived anyways.

  • @johnsmith5922

I will say you are indeed correct in that his bad luck has nothing to do with Clover's death. However I am going to take a different reasoning for it. Because it's not just Bout how luck works. But the fact the luck they each get works differently. Qrow's semblance is not directed at all by his will. It only seems to directly impact objects around him and has no influence on people. His is indiscriminate and thus only applies to nonsentient aspects of luck and rather merely causes it to happen. Like the fishing pole accidentally breaking the pipe freeing Tyrian. Clover however only applies his luck to himself. And this is through cause and effect. When he takes an action. His odds of achieving his goal are heavily influenced in his favor. This is why everything he does usually works out. Like how Qrow got caught by him despite seeing it coming. But if he is unaware of what is coming. He can't influence it in his favor. Brings about a bit of a causality loop. I thank you for bringing this up. I hadn't considered that was how his semblance worked before.

I highly appreciated your take on this ! I would even have given you an extra like if possible just for bringing up (adequatly) the Law of Large Numbers :) I would say this: it is crucial here to make the distinction between SEMBLANCE and RESPONSIBILITY. You showed very well (and I agree on this) how Qrow's semblance had nothing to do with Clover's death on itself (to be specific, the action of Tyrian stabbing Clover). We could still argue that Qrow's badluck had an impact if we consider the whole chain of events, for example it enhanced the probability that Clover's shot hooked the only hole in his blade, blade that would eventually be used by Tyrian but that is not the point here. What about Qrow's responsibility regarding Clover's death ? In my opinion, Qrow has a BIG part of responsibility here. Because it is about CHOICES also. Qrow CHOSE to team up with Tyrian. As long as Tyrian was tied in the aircraft, Qrow was RIGHT to fight Clover because he would follow his orders no matter what. BUT as soon as Tyrian got free, the STAKES changed. If I recall, Tyrian was ALSO "wanted" before he got apprehended. Why didn't Qrow try to convince Clover to team up against the biggest (and factually earliest) threat that is Tyrian, arrest him again and THEN get back to the "Qrow is wanted" part ? Why didn't Clover try to convince Qrow in the same way ?? We can clearly see Clover keep on attacking Qrow even after Tyrian joined the fight and before he tries to convince Qrow to team up against Clover. THIS MAKES NO SENSE !! It is in my opinion a big mistake. It devaluates BOTH Clover and Qrow's characters. Not mentionning that it highly devaluates the V7 finale as well.

13:00 reminds me of Alcatraz versus the evil librarians. The main character basically has the power of bad luck and it’s led him to have a terrible childhood, but soon he realizes he can control it and that he was just in denial. That letting his powers run rampant was easier than admitting that he could have prevented some of the misfortunes he’s faced. Anyway (getting off topic) why that reminds me of it is because in the book complicated weapons like guns are rarely (if ever) used against the Smedry’s (the main characters actual family, who all have unique and weird powers) because it leaves too much potential for mishap. It’s a kids book, but it’s also a really good book. Written by Brandon Sanderson, who usually writes epic fantasy.

I agree with video. The only reason I could see either symbalance playing a part is if qrow’s symbalance of misfortune caused clover’s aura to break when it shouldn’t have. Because qrow threw a punch and the outcome was it breaking clovers aura. It could be possible that he should have had some aura left but the punch did more than it should have. But I don’t think this is the intended way to watch it because we don’t have a graph or number system for their aura while they are fighting. So I think qrow’s symbalance didn’t play a part in it, but I think he will still blame himself.

Sometimes the smallest probabilities lead to the greatest of disasters, as a sequence of continuous unlikely events are theoretically and technically possible (Saiki K explained as much). The fight in the air ship before it crashed only had one minor shift in fortune, but that small tweak in fate lead to Clover's demise. And so in a wierd way, Clover and Qrow can manipulate reality on a grand scale, but as with many abilities, anything of that scale is very difficult to pull off.

#Phoenix/Night Thank you for bringing a calm and logical discussion to this subject. IMO its been far to easy for people to place blame for this tragic event in the story. At the end of the day the semblances at play in this fight scene were only part of the equation. The characters all made choices that arguably determined the outcome. I for example would argue that Ironwood has some responsibility for Clover's death because of: 1. He let his fear drive him into ordering the arrest of his most powerful allies when he would need them the most. 2. Ironwood is also headmaster of Atlas academy which is run like a military school. Thats all fine and good but it seems clear to me that he does not train leaders there. Sure the AceOps and other grads are excellent fighters but in a military sense they operate more like the robots than real world soldiers do. With all of that said Clover and the AceOps had the final choice to make on how/if to carry out Ironwood's orders. Sure, Ironwood should have trained them better and not put everyone is this type of situation and perhaps not made the decisions he did. But Clover, being in a leadership role himself, chose how he would act. Different probabilities would have been at play had he remained seated until the transport landed.

The effect Qrow's semblance might have had on the whole scenario is probably him getting framed for it, from the dropping of his sword/scythe to the police finding it with David's blood. All the parts in between were more along the lines of Murphy's Law type of bad luck, especially considering that Qrow said in Volume 4 that his semblance was always on what he said in this volume that he can't always control it.

I feel like Clover's death had more to do with his own semblance rather than Qrow's. The Fortune and Misfortune semblances are really confusing to think about, so I might not be correct. I think Clover's Fortune was affecting himself and Tyrian. Tyrian was pretty lucky to survive the crash and escape the ship almost unscathed. Clover was lucky to disarm Qrow, and Tyrian was lucky that the sword landed where it did. Tyrian was also lucky to escape so quickly after Clover tangled him with the fishing rod. It seems like the Fortune semblance makes lone fights more difficult for Clover because his enemies always get an advantage. On the other hand, Qrow's semblance makes lone fights easier because enemies always have a disadvantage. To fight well with their semblances, Clover needs to fight with a team, and Qrow needs fight alone. In reality, the semblances aren't the cause of Clover's death to begin with. Firstly, WHY didn't Ironwood send a proper prison transport to pick up Tyrian??? Ironwood used one for a group of children and a guy that threw a rock at a ship, but not for a SERIAL KILLER.. that works for SALEM? WHY? He sent a normal airship to transport the deadliest person in the city... Secondly, the situation that led to Clover's death was entirely Robyn's fault! Qrow would have been fine talking things over with Ironwood, but Robyn fired a shot that freed Tyrian and let him crash the airship! Finally, Clover died because he decided to continue attacking Qrow instead of teaming up with him to take Tyrian out first. *TL;DR: Luck semblances are confusing and might not have changed anything. It is actually Ironwood and Robyn's fault.*

I would actually say Clover killed Clover so to speak. It's a tyrion vs crow vs clover fight,. But In order of their priorities. Crow wants to kill Tyrion, stop Clover from arresting him and Robyn, and escape. Clover wants to arrest Crow and Robyn, have them all survive, and kill Tyrion. Tyrion wants to kill them all and have fun doing it. The odds are stocked against Clover, but also against Crow and Robyn. Crow and Tyrion are at a balance, whichever side he fights agaisnt harder will likely lose, but at what cost? if he takes out crow, he knows he will likely get killed by Tyrion, and tyrion then kills both Crow and Robyn. if he takes out Tyrion, he will likely lose to Crow, and he believes in Ironwood's plan. its a zero sum game for Clover, and he is not a betting man. I believe clover stacks the odds in Crow's's favor. Because even more so than he believes in Ironwood, Clover believes in Crow. and he wants him to believed in the Clover that believes in Crow.

Honestly, it is supposed to be Qrow's fault, it is his semblance and his choices that lead to clover's death. The sword being covered in blood is a completely new trope we have never seen before. Neo's weapon is not stained with any blood when she takes over the atlas ship, Adam's sword was not covered with blood when he sliced off Yang's arm, and there was no blood stained weaponry present when Pyrrha is killed either. Blood is only present when the wielder's direct actions leads to the characters death (Blake's weapon killing Adam, Jaune's sword killing Penny, and Qrow's sword when Tyrian stabs Clover). It can be implied with the imagery that the blood is on Qrow's hands. Within the context of imagery and metaphors we can support this idea further. Qrow explains in volume 8 that he makes a "deal with the darkness" which implies that Tyrian is supposedly a manifestation of this darkness or chaos. Which makes sense, throughout the series Tyrian is shown to simply want destruction, chaos, and division, he supports Salem for that reason alone, they share a common goal. Not only does Tyrian show to symbolize chaos or represent an incarnation of darkness and chaos throughout the entirety of RWBY, but his interactions with everyone else also seem to show that he is chaotic and craves that destruction mentioned earlier. He is constantly picking fights and giving wisdom randomly to other people. He forces his viewpoints onto others with fear and even fights his own allies. By making a deal with this "darkness", Qrow becomes responsible for the events that take place. His "misfortune" is a manifestation of his feelings towards the situation, in the moment that Clover died Qrow was actively trying to kill Clover. The blood in turn lies on his weapon and hands and not on Tyrian's hands. Interpreting this in a thematic sense would allow you to interpret the scene within the context of philosophy and character's feelings rather than the literal actions of each character. If I had to describe the scene with one sentence I would write. As Qrow begins to become more dissatisfied and begins to become overwhelmed with hate and disdain for the situation, he causes the death of Clover and immediately regrets his actions. Tyrian's involvement is not as important as it may seem, the only reason it is Tyrian and not another character is because of what Tyrian represents in the story.

I think the argument people are coming from on why the events in episode 12 played out the way they did, is that Qrow's semblance may also be interpreted as bringing about an unfortunate fate. This long term misfortune probably typically only applies to him. Maybe his getting poisoned by Tyrian in volume 4 was an example of this, and it seems he always seems to lose friends too. His "You don't know my friends" line before the fight makes it seem like he always seems to lose his friends, like that guy in volume 5 who's bar tab Qrow paid for, or more recently Clover. My point being, his semblance in the long term, causes him to lose friends in one way or another.

Tyrion could also have potentially slipped while going for the killing blow, something that would very much be considered unlucky - After all, everyone slips on ice, it's just a matter of when in almost every case. There were so many factors in play at that moment, good or bad luck could 100% have played a factor.

However this something I actually thought of after watching the video and my own thoughts that neither Orow nor Clover have mastered their semblance because neither could cause the desire outcome they wanted only do things one way. Thus my theory is that because Clover has a "Good" Fortune semblance, he actually got himself killed through using his own semblance. Disarming Qrow was good fortune....for Tyrian. Clover's "good" fortune semblance was not used on him or Qrow but on Tyrian that time. Qrow being disarmed allow Tyrian the chance to kill Clover and have someone else take the blame for it

It's an interesting look at these particular semblances. The way you were describing them as reality breaking though, I don't think Good Fortune or Misfortune are as powerful as that. Reality *bending* perhaps, bending the rules of the world around them to fit a positive or negative outcome. I think if these were truly reality *breaking* semblances, then Qrow and Clover would have absolute and full control over their semblances, being able to turn them from a passive effect into an active one. In which case, Qrow may have been able to use his semblance to force a negative effect on Tyrion, perhaps dealing a life-threatening blow to Clover but not necessarily life-ending. In this example, Clover could very well have been put into critical condition but ultimately survive, despite his lack of Aura at the time. All that being said, I haven't rewatched RWBY much recently, still waiting to catch up with V8, but that's what I got from this discussion.

It's nice for someone to finally talk about how the luck semblances work. It can get pretty tiring for people to just assume everything good/bad that happens around Qrow and Clover is automatically caused by their semblances when good/bad things happen naturally and at times can't be avoided. One thing that really bugs me about Qrow's semblance specifically is that semblances are an extension of someone's aura and as such are meant to protect them in some way. When the show makes it seem like Qrow himself is a target of his own semblance or people assume that's what's happening, it just doesn't make sense to me because it should function like a luck debuff to _other people_ the same way Clover's is basically a luck buff to himself. If Qrow is inconvenienced by his own semblance it should be because it's affecting someone he doesn't want it to, not because it affected him specifically.

If you say Clover's good luck wouldn't have been in effect at the time because his aura had broken, does that mean that if Qrow keeps his aura broken all the time then his bad luck wouldn't effect others? In that case his emotional baggage regarding bad luck is questionable as he had the agency to just live a normal comfortable life without utilising his aura (assuming you have to 'turn it on' for it to be active) or live in a way that keeps the aura constantly broken.

i think Qrow's semblance COULD totaly influence probability enough for even a high maintained Gun to malfunction. Gunpowder AND dust need to ignite by the guns trigger in order increase pressure in the barrel and fire a bullet. the misfotune could be that the pressure isn't enough to effectively fire a bullet straight and it misses. perhaps the gun got cleaned recently and taken apart, then put together and a screw hasn't been tightened enough and the trigger lets loose during the shot. maybe the gun slips out of the persons hand or the recoil is increased due to higher pressure in the chamber and misses that way. in any case, there are multiple ways even a well maintained gun CAN malfunction. and Qrows semblance could totaly make that probability happen more likely.

If Qrow’s semblance can have a negative effect on his opponents (Tyrion falling through a beam) instead of himself, then could Clover’s semblance have a positive effect on his opponents instead of himself?

Knowing Qrow he is going to blame himself being his semblance and probably his Action in fighting him because it ended with clover dead yet the thing is He didn't mean for clover in the end to die regardless . And Tyrian is A killer so I doubt it would Influence Him he influenced himself . I do dislike Clover Going against Qrow when they had a major Fight with Tyrian yet Its still sucks that clover died .

I never bought that fish pole boy had good luck semblance. I'm chalking it up to RT not giving or saying what his semblance is. You know what he did have though? Qrows pointy end plowed through his backside like the ship fanatics wanted.

The bad luck happening could be due to the loss of a close friend instead of the bad luck making someone decide to be a blood bringer like say it would be bad luck if lightning struck someone making you lose them
