RVK Newscast #92: The New Fissure And Its Long Lava Flow
Two new fiery cracks appeared in the earth on Monday, only 500 metres from Geldingadalsgos. The lava has now flowed to Merardalur, more than a kilometre away. But after we visited the area a third fissure also appeared.
The area close to Grindavík is changing rapidly; for example, the lava around the original eruption is now well over ten metres high. All of these eruptions are connected to the same volcanic system, and scientists say that there could even be more.

Valur, an excellent report. You've captured the size and scope of these volcanos in a way that no one else has. The speed of the volcanofalls and the mass of the lava flow is incredible. Great job by you and Art. Keep up the good work.

Very nice reporting. Thanks
All your reports are fantastic. But this one is superfantastic! Great collaboration between Valur and Art, and editors. Love the variety of shots. Please be careful out there. A greeting to Polly too please, from our dog Golly and us in 🇨🇦.
Any hot liquid that glows from the inside is just hypnotic. I used to work in a molten aluminum plant and people forgot about safety and got mesmerised looking at the molten metal glowing often.

Thanks for showing the lava field of Bob and the fissure eruption of Flo (as named on YT in the Viðburðastofa Vestfjarða) - you'll have to go back and take a look at SIF now too !!!
Perfect example of why it's so dangerous to be at the site. The ground he walked on yesterday is the site of the overnight 3rd fissure eruption! I wonder if either of the team noticed anything while walking over the new fissure's position. Thanks for the best report yet on this eruption! But don't get so close again, please!

Wow they need to do a story about that!! Trace the path, show the new fissure!
Our geologists here in Montana USA are calling the area where these volcanoes are forming a "rift valley." They are predicting the continuation of the type of volcanism we are seeing now, going into the future. EDIT: Relative to the length of the lava falls, it's possible that Hawai'i with all its many volcanic eruptions has something to rival the falls in this video. Mt Etna is currently erupting. Its lava moves a lot slower, because it has a lot of silica in it. I don't know how far it is downhill to the sea, and no one has posted videos showing that (maybe it's too dangerous). Mt Pacaya in Equador is erupting, but there's no video of lava fall(s) there, either. If Mauna Loa goes, it's a shield volcano, basaltic lava like Meradalir and Geldingadalir, and that lava will flow with gravity following the path of least resistance to the sea, however far that is. These are interesting times, for sure! RE-EDIT: When basaltic lava cools, it forms a shell over itself of black glass. When the lava is flowing slowly and is subject to more cooling away from its vent/volcano, you can hear that glass shell breaking as the lava flows. It sounds like glass breaking.

Etna when she puts out lava flows is faster then this due to the one mile drop right off the bat. Kilauea tends not to have lava falls through the fact that it's relatively flat but that said fissure 8 during the last eruption put out more quantity of lava in a day than the original cinder cone here could in a month. Her lava river was up to a half kilometer wide moving at up to 30 kilometers per hour.
@cacogenicist

Hello from Alberta, Canada! Very cool! Thank you for the updates!
Based on where you were walking around the original eruption, I would say you either walked across the new fissure or at least it's flow. Be careful out there, as there is also another spot where the ground has depressed a bit and that could be next.

Hello fra the Grand Canyon!
Valur - Greetings from California. We watched a live stream of the East Rift Zone eruption in Hawaii for weeks but your coverage of this Icelandic event is top-notch. This is super! Thanks to you and Art for taking us there. Hard to believe that tall cone is only 48 hours old -the amount and speed of the lava flow is amazing. It is nice to see a volcano that is not destructive to people and their homes. I live just south of Mount Saint Helens and when she erupted 40 years ago, it was quite a destructive event. Thanks also for your cautionary words about being safe around the volcano. I only wish I could visit right now.

Get an infrared camera up there. Maybe a new fissure will give itself away before it opens up. Historic footage of the very beginning of an eruption.
I can’t believe the evolution of this volcanic landscape. This video in particular is stunning with the lava river.
Love the enthusiasm of the reporter.
Amazing to watch the Earth grow before our eyes.
Love your commentary about the liquid rock river filling in the low points around the volcanic systems.
Anywhere else you’d need a hundred million dollars and a team of computer artists working night and day for months to produce something looking half as awesome. In Iceland, this is just another Wednesday. As for lava flows, Piton de la Fournaise on Réunion in the Indian Ocean is also producing very long, fast-moving lava flows, but I think your new flow is even bigger. Stay safe Valur and thank-you for sharing this extraordinary sight. Yes I’m still jealous you can get so close to the volcano.
This is fascinating, but Valur, Art, please be careful on these trips out to the volcano. That 3rd fissure that opened up last night seems to be right where you were standing. Please don’t put yourselves in danger for our entertainment. We’re definitely not worth that!

Actually I am worth it ! Joking aside, please be careful, they are fantastic reports, your commentary and also the videography are both excellent. I was interested when you said they thought the new fissure would be closer to the original cinder cone, events since your visit have proved this correct of course with the 3rd fissure appearing a lot nearer . It makes you wonder where the next one will be. More NE again or to the SW of the original along the fissure line. All the best.

Wow, what a great insigt into the vulcano system there! Thank you very much! At 5:20 we can see the lava "waterfall" (no, the lavafall ;-) flowing out of the new volcano in the background on the left base of the volcano into the lava "river"... wow... and at 8:40 again... And at 6:36 you can see the place where the lava flow later split up into a second path which would be a bit more in the background, flowing around that last small hill before the final valley for now. So if someone was on that last hill, he would have had no chance to come out other than with a helicopter. Oh, you were standing there at that exact hill at 9:50, maybe you were just around the point where the lava flow split in two flows later that day ;-) And that's why the area is closed for the general public, because if there are hundreds of people watching the volcano and another fissure would open up behind them or another lava flow would flow down somewhere behind them, they would be trapped. And now try to evacuate hundreds of people from there. It is not possible to improvise a bridge over a lava flow, it would melt and burn. But with just a few people between two lava flows, it's still possible (but expensive) to evacuate them with a helicopter. Oh and 12:30 looks like there must be magma not very far below the old surface - or is it already a subsurface lava flow at that point... anyway, it's really fascinating! Thank you for showing this to us!
Another amazing update, thank you so much for bringing this to us.
I work in news. This is stunning reportage, the fluent commentary, the camera angles, the obvious risk. And that's an award-winning sign-off: "Goodbye!" (Waves, dons gas mask, walks quickly off camera to avoid being poisoned in the line of duty). Well done.
That lava river is one of the neatest things I've ever seen. From the aerial shots that I've seen, the river looks quite narrow, I'm wondering just how deep it is and if it'll leave behind lava tubes after the fissure dries up.
Watching from Canada. LOVE your reports - they're the best! Thank you!
