The Sante Fe, I used was the V6 XL with a 5000 pound towing capacity. The trailer had a loaded weight of 3500 (KZ180QB) pounds and a hitch weight of 500 pounds. There were 2 people in the vehicle with limited luggage. All weights were within the allowances as specified in the vehicles manual. A weight distribution (BLue Ox) system, brake controller, hitch and air bags (rear shocks) were professionally installed. (The Sante Fe comes pre wired for the hitch electrical connections) The vehicle performed as well as could be expected, with no problems, during or after the trip.

Thanks! I have very similar set-up with Sorento and KZ Escape (only getting delivery in two weeks), so it was good seeing your setup. Whats your experience with the wds (I bought a Curt)?

Does this Hyundai have a CVT transmission? Wondering if you have had any concerns?

  • @rvhtravels

No, it is a 6 speed automatic transmission.

No concerns, ran well. The transmission has a manual override, that allows you to hold it in a gear, keeping revs up.

There is a video on the interior of the travel trailer, but not one on the interior of the Santa Fe. 😬

Hi, I have a dodge journey that can also pull 3500 lbs. I want to pull a 20ft RV that weighs about the same weight as you are pulling. I, however, have no idea what i am doing and did not really understand much of what ypu were talking about, but I am a single mom, and need to figure this out bc my teenage son and I are traveling the country this year. Could you tell me what I need to buy and do to pull an RV with my vehicle that is not a fortune. Lol Please and thank you.

Hi Alyssa, thank you for you comment/question. There is no quick easy answer where towing is concerned, except to say safety should always come first when setting up a tow vehicle to haul a travel trailer. You say your Tow Vehicle (TV) can tow 3500 lbs. You wish to tow a 20 foot trailer also weighing 3500 lbs. (I assume fully loaded with all your gear and the water tanks empty). * See comments at the end of the email. The equipment you will need for towing are as follows:1. A tow hitch with the correct rating fitted to the TV (This is what the trailer will attach to)2. An electrical socket fitted to the TV to plug the trailer's electrical cable into - this will work the tail and signal lights of the trailer.3. A brake controller installed in the TV - this will allow you to apply the trailer brakes independently in an emergency..4. A Weight Distribution system (WD) - this will spread the weight of the trailer (hitch weight) over the TV and Trailers axles, preventing rear sag on the TV.5. A Sway Bar - this will assist in reducing the trailer swaying on the open road.Comments:It is often suggested that the trailer and the cargo in the trailer not exceed 80% of what the vehicle is rated to tow (This is a rule of thumb only)Nevertheless, the vehicle must not be loaded more than the max. Gross Vehicle Weight permitted in the manual, nor should the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight (Combined trailer and vehicle weights, fully loaded) be exceed. These weights should be in the manual and correct measurements can be obtained by taking the rig over a weigh scale. The hitch weight must also be considered - refer to car manual. Likely it will be in the region of 350/400 lbs. I recommend that you discuss your trip with a reputable RV dealer in your area and have them set your vehicle and trailer up for the road and explain the different systems and setup to you. You can also chat to a Dodge dealer/service department and ask them if your vehicle needs any upgrades for towing. (Oil cooler, different tires, air bags in the rear suspension etc.)The trip you are planning (X country) will mean you encounter various road conditions and therefore your rig needs to be correctly setup and safe. I would suggest that once you have the rig ready you do a few short runs covering off highways, hills etc. and generally getting a comfort level with the performance and operation of the vehicle and the trailer before you embark on your X country trip - must say I feel envious at the thought.

We are looking at a Coachmen 193BHS which is a 19' Trailer and weights 3500 dry and that is pushing our limits with a 5000# tow rating. You won't be able to pull a 20' Trailer with a 3500# tow rating I am pretty sure. Most people recommend not towing more than 80% of your recommended max capacity because it can be very hard on your vehicle's engine and transmission. Especially in a mountainous area. Also, the Dodge Journey has a very poorly designed engine which is weak. I highly recommend towing something around 1800 to 2200 lb Dry. Anything over 1/2 your vehicles total weight needs trailer brakes also. You would want to consider a transmission and engine oil cooler also.

Your vehicle can probably pull it. You could also kill your family because you never towed before and your vehicle cannot stop the thing or control sway.

@@silvioligutti4849 I pulled with Kia Telluride single axle travel trailer about 3500lbs. Pulls very well with weight distribution hitch and anti sway bar. I drive with respect to the iron horse, my mpg was about 14.5 average. Going against wind 10mpg and as high as 16 mpg. I pulled two times larger travel trailer 26djse 29.6 ft 4600lbs with Telly for short trips about 1.5 hours but it’s pushing. Now I pull 26djse with f150 much better pulling experience but the mpg dropped to 12.
