When i researched this car, several sources were pretty clear of the need for a cooler, i even had the dealer install the tow package just so i had everything i needed, what i did find misleading was the 5,000 lb capacity could only be achieved with 2 passengers and en empty cargo bay, the more weight inside, the less you can tow, i had to factor all of this when i was shopping for a camp trailer for my family.

I just priced out a 2024 Passport. I asked the Dealer to give me a price on the OEM hitch,wiring and transmission cooler so I could tow 5000lbs. He told me $2,500.00 installed.

In addition to the trans cooler I would install a Scan Gauge II so you can monitor the transmission fluid temps real time. Its just plugs into the OBD II port.

Im thinking about the 2022 HOnda Passport Trailsport which advertise to be able to tow 5000 lbs too...I am now wondering if it can tow a TAB400 Nucamp trailer of 3900 lbs. What do you suggest?

That is a secondary cooler? Water to oil, and then your air to oil cooler? My acura tl has the same engine and transmission but comes from the factory with both, why? It's just a car.

This is going to affect my future purchase.

I have a 2017 Pilot and it was quite clear that the factory tow capacity was 3500 and if you wanted to bring it up to 5000, you would need the trans cooler (then you get the sticker). Always good to do the research

You are correct! I have a 2016 AWD and the User Manual stated the same. I installed the ATF cooler, tow hitch, and tow wiring harness to make it 5000-pound towing capable. Then I towed a U-Haul 6x12 trailer with stuff in it with gross weight around 3200-3500 pounds from LA to Yosemite, then Tahoe. On the way back from Tahoe, I got a message on the dashboard saying "Your Transmission is too hot!" around Bakersfield. To be fair, the outside temperature at that time was 115-120 degrees and I was hauling at 70-75 mph. So it's possible that the ATF cooler wasn't able to cool down the ATF efficiently. I then had to pull over a nearby area to let the transmission cool down for 45 minutes, then continued the drive home. This kinda of got me have doubt in the 5000 pound towing capacity as advertised. I'm not complaining. Just sharing my experience and hope someone can share their experience on towing 5000 pounds. Cheers!

​@Kyle Nguyen a good rule of thumb is 80% of whatever the manufacturer says yoy can tow. So if Honda says 5,000, I wouldn't tow more than 4. In my case, my 06' Pilot says I can do 3,500 pounds, so I won't tow more than 2,800 pounds. And another thing is, it specifically says int he manual that I cam tow a 4,500 pounds boat trailer, NOT something else. It is likely yoy are only able to tow 4,000 pounds for anything that isn't a boat trailer. Just saying..

What year Honda is this?

I have a Passport and was fully aware of the need for a cooler to tow 5000lbs before I purchased the vehicle. Not sure how you missed this detail as it is in all the written material and mentioned in many other youtube videos. You could make a strong argument that Honda should include the hitch and cooler from the factory, but I see no rational for calling it 'false advertising'..
