Ruthlessness | EPIC: The Musical ANIMATIC

Ойын-сауық

that was probably one of the hardest animatics I've ever done. Truly hope you guys enjoy it, making it was certainly one experience.
Also fun fact, this animatic has 957 frames. It's officially the most frames I've ever drawn in an animatic.

Honestly, Oddyseus was right in what he said, and Poseidon wouldn't have forgiven him anyway, "The line between naivety and hopefulness is almost invisible", Poseidon was simply being terribly cruel, he wanted to give them hope, which would really be a false hope, to then utterly crush it, he never really had any real intention of forgiving them and letting them go

I really love the one ship being held in the air but if I could animate, in my opinion I would have the one ship and Odysseus being held in the air individually to emphasize how powerless he was to help his crew and how they were all yelling for him to help

2:01 man, Poseidon's face at the "let him live" line just RADIATES the energy of "are you fucking kidding me, man?" Your interpretations of certain scenes are just A+! Odysseus's ship being held aloft as he watches the others die is utterly brutal, and him throwing a knife at the bag changes it from a sort-of comedic beat to a truly desperate move. And Circe at the end is a hell of a cliffhanger, well done

Except octopus are barely featured in greek mythology, and poseidon has 0 affiation to octopus, which is more of an equestrian deity. Meaning horses and horse based creatures, Pegasus is his literal son born from the bloody stump of medusa's neck after getting decapitated by Perseus. In fact, his other son Bellarophon inherited his horse riding abilities from poseidon and proceeded to use those abilities to aid in his slaying of the monster known as Chimera and would later attempt to fly up to olympus, both events being on the back of the earlier referenced Pegasus. Also Pegasus and Chimera are not the names of the species as they are the only ones of their individual kind, Pegasus is literally just the name of the singular winged horse and Chimera being the name of the individual monster.

Sorry to be the party pooper but the Kraken is norse mythology and theres literally nothing resembling an octopus or squid in greek mythology, probably has something to do with the fact that from what I understand, octopi are not native to the Mediterranean especially around greece due to how flippin random the weather is.

However I feel the imagery of the giant tentacles coming out of the water to smash and drag down ships was almost directly referencing the kraken. Especially considering, as you said, there is no real reason to have octopuses/squids connected to posiden's design otherwise.

The sheer hubris and stupidity of Odysseus to give his name after defeating his opponent.... And then to throw his own line back at Odysseus, 'I am your darkest moment.' Hey I understand how you feel completely! And I’m not sure if you’ve heard the rest of the musical or at least carefully listened to it that much. But in defense of Ody he wasn’t showing hubris in EPIC! In the original Odyssey he was but this is a retelling! Ody shouted his name bc he was hurt and angry. Several of his men including his (extremely merciful) best friend just died in a really really traumatic way. He shouted his name to teach the Cyclops a lesson on mercy. He made a dumb and horrible mistake not on a clear mind. He blinded Polyphemus out of self-defense and to get his body away from the entrance (“His body his blocking the path- if we kill him then we’ll be stuck inside”). All Ody wanted was to get food for his crew, leave, and see his wife and son. He didn’t know a cyclops lived in that cave, he didn’t want to fight the cyclops (as seen with the fact he tried to negotiate first) and he certainly didn’t want his best friend and men to die like that. It’s not justice-Even if Ody wasn’t in the right. Because killing several hundred people isn’t equal to getting blinded. It’s ruthless, which is _exactly_ the intention for this portrayal of Poseidon!

@@TheQuasarWinds You're saying there is no hubris in: - Believing you're too good to kill an infant when you just got done slaughtering an entire city of unprepared soldiers. - Refusing to pray to Poseidon before departing for home. - Thinking that lying to a cyclops (whose favorite pet you just murdered) and offering him a drink will make him spare you. - Actively going against the advice of your chosen deity and basically telling the cyclops everything about you in a prideful boast after you, again, assumed you're too good to kill your opponent. - Seeking out the wind god Aeolus instead of at least trying to appease Poseidon, or just dealing with the consequences of your actions when the storm comes. - Constantly refusing to hear or listen to the concerns of your men despite constantly endangering them, even after the vast majority die needlessly from your mistakes. - He damn near falls victim to Circe after failing to kill her immediately, giving her time to try seducing him. Only his love for his wife saves him. - Damn near fighting a prophet because the guy doesn't just tell him what he wants to hear, even though the meaning of his prophecy is obvious if you think about it for like 2 seconds. More stuff will probably come up later, we already know Zeus gets involved somewhere down the line, but Odysseus gets put through the ringer a lot because he puts his conscience ("I'm the only one whose line I haven't crossed") above the survival of him and his men, which is hubris of the highest order.

For once a good take, Im tired of people praising the octopus thing. That choice just does not work for me under the context that this is Poseidon. Octopi don't feature in greek myth almost at all. If this was under the context of being some other ocean deity from a typical fantasy world, then I'd be more down for this design. Im not saying the animatic is bad or anything that happens is bad. I just find the context of this supposedly being poseidon to be incredibly jarring. It would've been one thing if the tentacle were made of water, but them being physical pieces of the god himself just does not work for me.

I absolutely love the framing for the line "Line between naivaty and hopefulness is almost invisible" 2:53 It really highlights the scale between Odysseus and Posiden, making it almost pitiable he thought his wit and cleverness could get him out of the current situation. But looking at it, he stood no real chance.

... You know, this whole sequence is even more terrifying for Odysseus when you realize that Poseidon was likely holding back. Even as divinely pissed off as he was, Poseidon still had enough self-control to only murder MOST of Odysseus' soldiers. Had he felt like it, he could have sent them all, including Odysseus himself, straight to Hades. Instead, he took the time to show them WHY leaving the cyclops alive was a mistake, and why leaving him blind was even worse.

Both portray Poseidon as Eldritch Divine Monsters. Poseidon here has ties to older form from the predecessor of hellenistic Greece: a catatonic God, ruler instead of Zeus and called the Earthshaker. Also the ties to the most nefarious mythical sea creature that sailors have feared with him are great. The other animatic does what a lot of animatics are doing, where Poseidon is one with sea and therefore attacks them through whipping up a storm. It also ties into his other position as God of Horses, with him turning into one (as he has countless times). It's also a neat connection to the way that poets and writers back then described turbulent waves as racing horses. And of course, pointing out the irony of Odyssey with the Trojan Horse built along with Athena - who is Poseidons main rival not to mention.

I personally think the overall choreography is more clever and impactful in this animatic with the little details of poseidon holding up the ship, odysseus throwing a knife at the bag and the menacing red tint when poseidon goes on his rampage. I also prefer his design here, i particulary loved his unique tentacle movements. He looks less human and more powerful. I really liked the horse theme in the other animatic though. Gigi, phenomenal as always! Your Poseidon design is amazing, and I really like how you depicted the “All I gotta do is open this bag” sequence particularly. It was a dramatic and harrowing scene, which is different from how I usually see people animate it based on Odysseus’ chipper tone. I really enjoyed that! I also thought it was a nice touch to have Poseidon’s tentacles suspend Odysseus’ ship in midair while he wrought havoc on the rest of the fleet. That gave a distinct feeling of helplessness (and ruthlessness) as Odysseus’ was forced to watch the carnage.

I like how you design all the gods to be somewhere in the Uncanny Valley. They're still humanoid, attractive, but it almost seems like these alien creatures folded themselves into the shape of a human. For Posiodon, it almost feels like there was a hollow statue of a god and some terrible, malicious octopus crawled inside and is looking out of it's eyes. You end up feeling like a shellfish who just realized something has snuck into your tank. All this to say, your Posiodon is scarier the more you look at him, good job 👍🥲😅

The FAKE OUT for Odysseus' ship being lifted up as if THEY were in danger was one of my favorites. I wouldn't have seen it coming if I didn't know the song and MAN, did that make the scene EVEN MORE INTENSE. (Poor Odysseus watching it all occur). Lastly- I love your depiction of Poseidon. Poseidon's (back spike thing? theres a word for that im sure) reflects that I think. but to a greater point like the kind of place ship graveyards are made from, or the spires that spawned around the fleet. As if there is a fury always behind him, waiting. and i find that very cool. 2:03 i agree with Poseidon's expression here. what were you thinking man!? you went to the length of ruining your genius of using a name no one would look into then you ditch it to gloat!?!

This might be the best Poseidon I’ve seen. He’s just Eldridge enough to show off how powerful the Greek gods are but also just human enough to show how they aren’t exactly omnipotent

What a marvellous work. You know, I felt that a lot since thanks to EPIC I read the original story, and I don’t know if you know that, but Odysseus cries A LOT throughout the whole story and I like that you made him cry here.
