Ruthlessness | EPIC The Musical | Animatic

Odysseus... the horse is here....
FINALLY, I HAVE FINISHED IT! Sorry to everyone who thought that I was dying, or at least I acted like I was when I was working on this. And I will give BIG thanks to my friend who was willing to pretend to drown in my bed so I could have some references.
I usually have a lot of references/easter eggs in my animatics. Usually, I have Disney, like Aladdin or Cinderella.
But this one, I used the short film "Augenblicken." That film is one of my pillars of why I became so interested in 2D animation! It's really good, but I must give a trigger warning that it's about SA. I actually had a plan that I would make an animatic similar/based on that short film, but it's about Hera and Zeus, and I scrapped it. But I couldn't help myself to be inspired by that film!
Thank you for watching!

I think it was the part when Odysseus state that he took no pleasure in Polythemus' pain. Which was a flat out lie since Odysseus literally shouted out his name to the Cyclops so he can always remember that it was he that blinded him. Also Odysseus never truly apologize about blinding Cyclops. Notice he never outright says he sorry, but rather framing it as a form of self-defense ('I only meant to disarm, I only want to run away'). @@fbiuzz I don't even think this was why he did it. The entire song Poseidon is giving Odysseus a lesson on being ruthless because he is wanting to be good and merciful to everyone he meets. The entire song is Poseidon saying show no mercy to anyone. Then after all that he says to apologize? No. "The line between naivety and hopefulness is almost invisible" Naivety is referring to a lack of wisdom or judgement that Odysseus thinks Poseidon will actually let him go. In Greek mythology Poseidon is the most petty among the gods. After that entire song, and with that background, why would Poseidon all of a sudden show mercy to the man that blinded his son, didn't kill him, and openly told him his name? Poseidon was never going to spare Odysseus or the fleet regardless of whether he apologized or not. It's only thanks to the bag of wind that Odysseus got his last ship away before they died as well.

Think what I like about this one is how *inhuman* Poseidon is. His face as a human is skull-like, a pale brow and hollow cheeks around monochromatic eyes and a beard that frames his lips apart from his jaws, like teeth. And when he shifts into a horse, he moves fluidly, standing like a statue that shatters the laws of motion when he shifts. Poseidon isn't an especially powerful humanoid here. Poseidon is an aspect of reality and fantasy, reminders of death and fear. Trying to dance around him with words means he teaches you that his vows, like water too, can be unyielding.

There are people arguing in the comments about morality and justice, but ultimately Poseidon is just angry. You can't reason with an storm. There's no justification or logical debate which can make a typhoon change its course. That's the essence of Poseidon here, he's an angry storm, the backstory is just why he's angry, there's nothing Odysseys could say to calm him down, no more than he could talk down a thunderstorm.

For people asking why Poseidon seems not to care about Odysseus hurting his son and wishing he’d just killed him, for ancient Greeks a death in battle was a glorious end. If Odysseus killed Polyphemus it would be honorable for him and by extension Poseidon. By leaving him maimed and humiliated, he’s humiliated Poseidon, and for a god that’s the worst disservice you can give them. It’s really weird from a 21st century western point of view, but it’s a pretty accurate depiction of Poseidon as a Greek god

@@michaeldeighton323 Lmao, using all those technical words to make a non-argument and then insult the quality. Bathos is used as an intentional anti-climax, a way of immediate subversion to segue into the next part where no clean transition exists. For Odysseus of all characters, it works the best. He's still a soldier. Everyone is dead. His ship is the only one that remains. But HE is still alive and he still has some men. He is an optimistic bastard by design. He remembers what he has, sees Poseidon's hubris as a weakness, then uses the tone shift to confuse the God enough to escape. With Poseidon DECIDING to let him go, with the sinister threat (Which is contained in the musical stings of the piano) that this escape is temporary and that Poseidon won't forget. Tone is carried by the instrumentation as much as the lyrics and their delivery. In comparison to the total piece, there's a more clear transition away from brief triumph to grief. It's only glaring because this is one song out of a series, so there's no continuation. You're condemning a part without the context of the whole. Would it work in a normal play? Probably not, but Musicals don't function the same as plays. They have different rules and standards. So take some time to learn those rules and standards before passing harsh judgement. These words are probably wasted and it will just get countered by semantics, grammatical mistakes, or just calling me a "Fan boy" or whatever like I've seen all around the criticisms that have been confronted. But I figured I'd throw them out there anyways for those who wish to either have a dialogue or see a perspective that goes into detail as to why these things work.

It actually provides some level of connection between Poseidon's domains as god of the sea and god of horses that has a line of reasoning behind it. I love all the parts where you make use of Poseidon's associations with horses, but this bit in particular really sold it to me as something that could be an intrinsic part of his current characterization, rather than it just being a vestigial trait.

There is a brutal irony to not having killed the Cyclops after killing Hector's child back in Troy in order to avoid a future fate. Having Posiedon holding a shaow child as he sang that line was a brutal reminder of what Odysseus has already done, a demonstartably even more ruthless action than killing the Cyclops would have been.

Overall this is a very fitting visual to show Poseidon’s wrath towards Odysseus for blinding Polyphemus and leaving him alive.

This is one of those amazing animatics where you can rewatch it a dozen times and still find something new to enjoy. A moment that I love is at 1:47: in the brief second before he turns to Odysseus he looks so affectionate towards the baby in his arms - is this a memory of when Polyphemus was a baby? It's a good reminder that Poseidon was actually a decent divine parent compared to most of the pantheon. I also love 2:54, where he literally stops seeing Odysseus as a person. He's closing his heart to all the paperwork he's about to give Hades. Every god Odysseus has talked to so far - Zeus, Athena, Aeolus - has told Odysseus that he must walk a ruthless path. Poseidon, in all his eldritch equine glory, is giving him an object lesson in why he can't have his cake (remain unchanged by his experiences) and eat it too (return home).

This mortal man, with his and his crew's lives on the line isn't taking the situation seriously. @@ilyte1I see your point. Personally, I think that it means more towards Poseidon's disgust. When he says the line you quoted I believe he is referring to Odysseus trying to be clever. The Gods in Greek mythology never go back on their word. At least not that I can remember. Usually they lay out a deal for the mortal with strict conditions, like with Hades and Orpheus. So, with that said, I think Poseidon genuinely would have let Odysseus go had he actually apologized. I mean, Odysseus is a prideful man, but he's earned it because he is actually clever. But Poseidon knows this. He's watching for it. So when he says "the line between naivety and hopefulness is almost invisible," seems like he's calling Odysseus out for trying to pull one over on him. In a very "You really tried that. With me. After everything I just showed you. I can't tell if you were being hopeful that I wouldn't catch that or are just so naive you don't truly understand the situation you're in." And when Odysseus didn't apologize, after Poseidon clearly laid out the terms of the deal, he followed through with what he said would happen. He sank the ships and drowned most of the men.

The horse form of Posidion is genius, especially when you look at how some mythologies like Celtic and Nordic have monstrous horses in some of their stories that actively hunt and drown travellers.

this has to be by far my favorite animation for Ruthlessness. I watch it at least once a day honestly, because it's so well done and the usage of Lord Poseidon being a stallion like he is in some lore, is just amazing and it feels thoroughly well researched and I'm in awe. I wanna animate like this.

One thing that I like about the artistic depiction here is that when Poseidon asks for an apology, Odysseus seems to try and placate him diplomatically. He is good with his words, he's a tricked the cyclops this way. He seems so confident in his supplication to Poseidon, and that is where Poseidon seems to take offense. It specifically after Odysseus tries to sway a god that the god strikes his crew down for the audacity of it. I love that detail.

The horse imagery is amazing, the expressions of horror and pain that flash in the eyes of Odysseus and his men are drawn and animated incredibly well, the movements are all so smooth and fluid... EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS SO GOOD!!!! You did amazing! :D

In defense of Poseidon slaughtering the Ithacans, he had said that he’d stay his hand in exchange for an apology from Odysseus. If you pay attention to exact words, “I’m sorry” never passed Odysseus’ lips in this scenario. Instead, what Odysseus offered was an excuse that, when analyzed, was full of lies. Think back to the Cyclops saga. “We meant no harm” falls apart when “Survive” and “Remember Them” are looked at. In the former, Odysseus had quickly resorted to lethal force (albeit in self-defense) to deal with Polythemus to take his flock to feed his men (even nice boy Polites wanted the sheep). And in the latter song, Odysseus’ men and Athena both quickly suggested killing Polythemus, an act that was CLEARLY harmful. “We only hurt him to disarm him” is a lie because again, the sheep. Odysseus and his men stole the flock on their way out. This entire conflict started over ownership over Polythemus’ pets that the Ithacans wanted to use to resupply their provisions (it’s their own fault for not keeping track of their food supplies for the Trojan campaign or remembering how to fish/hunt and gather). Furthermore, taking away his club while he was asleep technically counted as “disarming”, but they proceeded to use it against him. “We took no pleasure in his pain” is COMPLETE cap. Odysseus, as a final middle finger and perhaps his biggest moment of hubris in the entire Odyssey, turned to a defeated Polythemus on his way out and boasted that Polythemus was blinded and tricked by not “Nobody”, but Odysseus, King of Ithaca. He WANTED the cyclops to not only hurt, but live in fear, pain, and misery for daring to kill his best friend and several men under him. You don’t spite someone like that without taking at least a LITTLE pleasure in it. Finally, “We only wanted to escape.” This holds true up until the moment Odysseus orders the sheep taken and then his boast. True, Odysseus was trying to escape the cyclops who had been trying to murder him and his men because Odysseus realized far too late that the cave had a very angry homeowner and that a flock of wild sheep capable of feeding 600 soldiers long enough to cover 600 miles of open sea don’t typically live in a random cave. But then after he blinds Polythemus and tricks him into opening the cave, he doesn’t abandon the sheep gathering mission. In fact, he and his remaining away team DOUBLE DOWN and round up the flock anyway, doing exactly what Polythemus accused them of doing: coming into his home to steal. Yes, technically sacred hospitality was broken, here, but Odysseus broke it first because he and his men crept into the cave and started slaughtering sheep without the express permission of their shepherd/the “host” Polythemus. And of course, Odysseus could have simply sailed away leaving Polythemus to wallow in pity, but Odysseus stopped to make his final boast, earning him the direct wrath of Poseidon. So yes. TL;DR: Poseidon didn’t get an apology, he got a half-assed “Well he started it” from Odysseus, and was certainly justified in his revenge.

I think Poseidon would have killed them even with an apology. Hence the "the line between Naivete and hopefulness is almost invisible". He was just trying to humiliate Odysseus.

@@DelanoSeven7 True, he still is very angry as the father of the wounded party, and he wanted to make an example of Odysseus (and hammer home his lesson about ruthlessness in battle to avoid future problems). However, I’m just in the camp that Odysseus’ “apology” was so backhanded, I don’t blame Poseidon for going back on his offer to let the Ithacans go.

Although it's true that Odysseus was too smug in his apology, the idea that Poseidon was justified falls a bit flat when you remember Odysseus also offered to leave Poly alone when he realized the cave was inhabited. He offered him his wine stores in exchange for the dead sheep and simply leaving, showing that he realized his mistake and he really did not wish to steal from anyone, only being there on the tip of the lotus eaters. Yet Poly not only denied the offer, but actively tricked him into making him think he was accepting it before attacking, killing 6 crewmen (at least in the book) basically all in exchange for one single sheep, a gross overcompensation of the initial crime. Also, when Odysseus revealed his name, it was less of boast and more of a "this is revenge for my dead bestie" meaning he didn't do it for the fame, but out of sadness and grief at the moment, even trying to turn it into a lesson for Poly by the way he tell him to remember what happens when you're overly violent and not merciful. There's also the idea that Ody is not the first people Poly tries to eat lol. So overall, although Odysseus committed the crimes of robbery and blinding Poly, the cyclops himself also killed 6 people that admitted to their mistake and offered recompense, still making him the more damaging of both parties. Of course, Poseidon only cares for his kid (at least that's what he pretends), but that doesn't make his reaction justified when both parties already shed blood.

Personally I think Poseidon wanted a different kind of apology. Odysseus apologized for harming polyphemus, and said he didnt want to. But that is a rejection of everything Poseidon is telling in this song. He even starts with "but before we go I need to make you learn how ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves". And throughout the song he calls Odysseus out for not killing his son, for being far too nice, for revealing his name and letting him live. So when Poseidon comes down and says "apologize for my son's pain and all his cries", he doesnt mean "apologize for hurting him". He means "apologize for letting him live and cry to me" In fact, his response to the apology is "the line between naivety and hopefullness is almost invisible so close your heart, the world is dark and ruthlessness is mercy". He doesnt make a single comment about his apology being disingenuous, but instead reiterates that Odysseus is too nice and naive.

It has already been said in some other comments but the way Odysseus tries to avoid saying "sorry" as he justifies himself to Poseidon is crazy. I played it over a few times and every other scene he is expressive with his pain and feelings but then as he goes on one knee to explain himself his face blanks and he looks so fake. As if he was innocent and exhausted from being the good guy and preaching his innocence while being in fake pain/sympathy over what he did to polyphemus. Also so much love and credit for the animation of Poseidon pulling and pushing Odysseus by the hair back and forth. That felt so harsh and heavy.

Can I just say I love this music video but I also want to say that Oddyssey last line “all I Gotta do is open this bag” seems so random in the mist of the dark tones of the song, it’s just so cheerful it’s very random I don’t hate it. It just knocks you out of the vibe a little.
