This world sounds like it had so much potential. A fantasy book with gods in world war one and magic typewriters and war reporters, that sounds like something different and interesting, finally. Sad that instead it ended up like this

While I still regret not trust ingmy gut to DNF Divine Rivals, I'm so glad I listened to myself and didn't read Ruthless Vows. It sounds just as boring and still didn't earn the need of this "fantasy" setting. To answer your other questions, I do not have a Stanley cup and I don't have a preference between standalone/duology vs longer series. A regular priced insulated cup gets the job done just fine and as long as the story is well told I think either can work well.
