Oh dang. You're not kidding about the references being dated. 90% of these made me go "oh my god.whyyy, seriously?" I wonder if this genre would be improved if they weren't first person pov. At least for me, that contributes to how juvenile and cringe these books often feel

She has another book coming out in June as well. Very short breaks between books here 😬 Aster blurbed check & mate and it says "rivals-to-lovers" in the quote on the cover. WHAT RIVALS. WHAT. RIVALS??? Aster please The VSCO and alexis rose or whoever references had me so confused. VSCO? really? is that even a thing still lol I'm currently in the hell that is reading every single ali hazelwood book ever and would not recommend it, at least not reading more than one in a row lol. That's when the issues REALLY stand out...like the fact that every single character is a carbon copy of a different book's character, just maybe different hair color.

28:18 idc talking with minors about sex whether they're your siblings or not is weird as fuck, idk what's her point putting that here, as someone who had this happen to them this makes me feel weird

This is random but she probably came to the US because many graduate schools for STEM in the US get lots of grant money and therefore don’t have to really pay to go to grad school. However in Italy I believe they still have to pay tuition. That is why my former TA who was also born and raised in Italy came to grad school in the US

When I was in Philly someone leaned out their car to shout at me but instead of getting cat called they just screamed “YOURE SMALL” and sped past and that was really funny because it’s true but also more shocking than the drug addicts and crack head incidents (I was working another convention there so we had to walk back to the hotel and it was 100% a PVP enabled zone, very unsafe)

"Shiitake mushroom" is totally something we would say when we would slip up around the kids when they were little - before we were like, who cares, lol. I'll be 40 this year lmao - but that was 20 years ago......

As a female chess player, I was disappointed. I wanted her to love chess too and I wanted the romance to impact the rivalry in chess not him to get her back into chess. Basically I wanted the chess to be the main story. It had so much potential so but the execution failed completely.

omg my main gripe with this book was the lack of focus on chess despite it being the whole premise!! you have no idea how pissed off when the chess match that is being built up for the ENTIRE BOOK was not even given a scene??? they just mentioned it in the epilogue like “oh yeah she won bcs she’s just too good 😋”

and don’t get me started on her character’s family allegedly struggling financially but her repeatedly turning down opportunities to earn money via chess. like she knew she was good at it and was working a miserable job getting paid pennies. despite her (honestly, unreasonable) hang ups about chess, a normal person in this situation would just suck it up and play some chess??? i also hate that we spend most of the book with her acting “above” the chess world and barely get to see her actually enjoy the game

The frustrating thing is, I really do want to support fandom women becoming writers. I am in fandom too, and what Ali Hazelwood said about fandom sounds likeable. But god, her books, the reviews and the excerpts, sound so bad and generic and unsexy. Its also so frustrating that instead of the interesting, often even deep and diverse fanfiction writers something like this becomes famous.

she's italian?! as an italian that's a bit upsetting 😂 and sooo many references damn you weren't kidding 😭 this book will look so dated in a year's time. also, I don't know that much about chess but I don't think having a draw that many time in a row is possible at all lmao. she really was writing out of her ass for that one. Great review as always, I watched almost all of your videos and you never fail to make me laugh. Peace and love has now entered my every day vocabulary 😂

I really liked this book, and yes some of the references are dated; but I feel everyone generation has a lot of our references touted around. I think she’s also adding what some gen x or boomers might say in certain parts, but overall it wasn’t too bad for me; because she explained the main plots well within chess. Although I feel like she needed to focus on the chess more, and how things worked in her lines. It definitely shows she doesn’t play much chess, but I loved the character progression; although I understand that it’s too much!!

Tbh from synopsis i feel like its more "alpha wolf" in dated system of clan dynamic of wolfs that is fake than in omegaverse sense but i won't touch that book with 2 meter long pole so i will never be 100% sure lmao
