That voice breaking is actually a sign of a very good actor. This is musical theatre. You have to inject emotion into the songs.

I'm a proud Filipino and I love Lea so much, but Ruthie's I Dreamed A Dream is just magic. She was in character even if she was only standing. Her dynamics was divine, capturing every facet of emotion I have. She is amazing. Her video never fails to bring me to tears every single time.

Ruthie Henshall dipping into her chest voice (On "But he was GONE when autumn came!") is very much on purpose. When I heard her do this live in London it gave me CHILLS. Best Fantine EVER!

There is so much emotion in Ruthies voice, I can close my eyes and still feel every but of Fantines pain. How can she put so much power in her voice while not showing the effort in her face? I love Lea as Eponine but prefer Ruthie as Fantine.

Agree..I love Lea too but prefer Ruthie as Fantine. We were spoiled to see them perform and share the same stage together in the 10th anniversary. Anne Hathaway's version was also spectacular, but broadway musical is much different from big screen.

I also want to add that this setting was more of a concert setting compared to the other video you guys reacted to which was a traditional theater setting. When you guys first reacted to Lea singing "On My Own," that was also a concert setting, which I believe was the same date as this performance, except she played as young Eponine.

Yes and they disliked that quiye a lot on the part 2 reaction to that not having understood it was a concert format for an anniversary of the production and praising Regina Belaso or whatever as better. (funny I have no idea of her in LM at the West End or Broadway nor Manila as Fantine, Eponine, Javert or anyone else really - I thought she only belted pop covers of better artists in recordings and philippine state tv)

i like leah salonga version very emotional. i can feel the emotions as well as the voice the conviction and tone. i love it

Trivia: Ruthie Henshall was part of the cast (as one of the bar girls) in Miss Saigon where Lea Salonga played the lead role of Kim. :))

I love both of their performances, however Lea was sitting/kneeling down while "acted" based on her expression and actions, which is harder to get to your full potential, so I applaud her for that.

I honestly prefer Ruthie as Fantine, she sounds strong and gritty, yet still quite fragile. Lea's great too, tho 😊

Ruthie is a legend.

These two performances can't be compared on the same level because the way they performed are not the same... Lea was actually acting and moving around the stage while Ruthie was standing and singing and face acting only....

sheena valencia this is late, but I agree. Lea’s performance is the actual play, but ruthie’s is the one for the tribute to Mr. Producer, where Leah performed as Eponine.

@@browneyedpinai Im sure you do have a cd of Hey Mr Producer(I had it on VHS) but that's not what they are watching. They are watching Ruthie's performance at the legendery Les Miserables 10th Anniversary Dream Cast concert. You can find the video on YT and yes Lea played Eponine at that concert too.

I watched both and for me the best Fantine is Ruthie and the best Eponine is Lea in the whole history of this awesome musical....

Filipino through and through, but I'm not deaf. This is the standard, and haven't yet surpasses by anyone.

Got chills and goosebumps for lea, and just watched for ruthie.. the difference is emotion and portrayal.. the same voice impact, its the performance that matter..

Filipino here but she won for me.

Ruthie's performance really moved me more than Lea's, especially when she started like yapping her voice

Asriel Fuentes i agree. It has more anguish and pain. But Im not saying that Lea's is any lesser. This has just more depth as far as the emotions are concerned IMO. :)

on Lea's part she sang it on live theater with acting and moving. while on Ruthie's part she sang it on Les Miserables anniversary performance... im team Lea because of her perfect act with it tho i love Ruthie's act too her distinct voice are so powerful and yet graceful too.

Hi MGN just a trivia/FYI. This Ruthie Henshall performance and the one you reacted before, the Lea Salonga's On My Own were part of their 15th aniversarry concert of the Les Miserables. It was just one whole concert that's why they were just standing and not doing the play. 😋

I love both Ruthie and Lea's version. I cannot compare them and say which is better, I appreciate their differences. Also I hope people didn't dislike this video to up the reaction video on Lea's performance.

Totally different staging. Lea's was a cell phone camera shot from the audience. Ruthie's was professionally recorded for the 10th Anniversary DVD, professionally mixed in a studio. Watch Lea's version in the 25th Anniversary show. It is much better.

This video was taken from the same Les Miserables concert where you watched Lea Salonga's version of On My Own. As you can see, They were not fully acting and mostly standing still and do limited action because it's a CONCERT. So comparing a concert and a performance from the actual musical is miles different. I love them both. The emotion from their voices alone is more than enough to understand what their characters feel.

The movie version was wonderful as well.Not on the singing department,although it was still good in that aspect,but on the performance and emotion department.It was heartbreaking and they decided to keep the first take,so Anne Hathaway actually nailed it on the first try.Try watching it.You won't be disappointed,she was really in role.

The best version. She’s a better vocalist than Lea. Js. Both amazing natural talent and taught impeccably, but Ruthie has a nicer vibrato imo

The movement and the story must be done as it is a theater act... ruthie just sing it.. lea sang with all elements in her performance... no bias..

My last and final comment. To the Great MGN. I couldn't watch this reaction without cringing, actually i couldnt fonish it. I had to stop 3:20. Start writing this. "MGN have come to with a clean slate fresh etc. " What happened to "Reaction" videos? It has been taken to "Let's Criticised and Verdict This Videos" . Music Game News I don't know why but you became more like judges now in a singing competition, maybe i was wrong, i don't know and I must admit that I enjoyed more your reactions before coz you just enjoyed it without thinking too much if she/he hit that note or not, etc. I always watch your reaction videos even though I don't know the artist in the videos and reactions to movie trailers that I never heard or watch. But I'm still here, watching and waiting for the next MGN Reaction Videos. #morePowerMGN and by the way there is a Reactor that made a video saying that you are a fake reactor something like that. While Ruthie sings beautifully, in broadway you have to fill the whole theatre with emotions and feelings. And the hatred and sadness and agony, I only get to experience them with Lea's performance.
