Let's put everything in proper perspective. 1. Regine Velasquez a.k.a. The Songbird is a queen known for belting powerful songs (mostly pop and ballad). Her father trained her very well by having her sing in chest-deep water when she was still a child. Therefore, her vocal prowess is unmatched globally and she is considered as the ultimate diva in the Philippines. 2. Lea Salonga is another queen known for crystal-clear singing. She started her career as a theater child actress. Then, she landed the role of Kim in Miss Saigon... performed in West End of London where she won Best Actress in the Olivier Awards... performed in Broadway where she won Best Actress in the Tony Awards... became the voice of Princess Jasmine and Mulan in Disney movies... etc. Perhaps, she is the most internationally acclaimed Filipino artist to date. 3. After Miss Saigon, Lea Salonga played the role of Eponine (the character who sang "On My Own" in Les Miserables). And as she matured, she played the role of Fantine (the character who sang "I Dreamed A Dream"). 4. Les Miserables is the longest-running musical. Aside from Ruthie Henshall and Lea Salonga, there were many other actresses that played the role of Fantine. 5. During the 10th Les Miserables Anniversary Concert, Ruthie Henshall sang the songs of Fantine and Lea Salonga sang the songs of Eponine. 6. During the 25th Les Miserables Anniversary Concert, Lea Salonga sang the songs of Fantine and Samantha Barks sang the songs of Eponine. 7. A Les Miserables Anniversary Concert is different from an actual Les Miserables musical play. In the concert, although actors are in their costumes, their acting is limited to singing and facial expressions. It's a concert, remember? 8. Both Ruthie and Lea did an amazing job playing the role of Fantine according to their interpretations. Ruthie used a raspy voice to highlight the character's fading beauty. Lea used a sweet voice to highlight the character's vulnerability in the midst of suffering and despair. Therefore, singing "I Dreamed A Dream" in a musical play is different from singing it in a concert. Singing it in a movie is different from singing it in a theater. Singing it as a classic is different from singing it as a pop song. Cheers!

I agree with you, MRS. Comparing Lea to Regine is like comparing Julie Andrews to Whitney Huston, or Frank Sinatra or Michael Buble to Luciano Pavarotti. BTW, there was another delivery of I dream a dream by Lea, and more as compared to this one here, she sounded like Susan Boyle with her clean sweet voice, which does not lose its volume at the high notes.

That Ruthie Henshaw performance and the Lea Salonga "On My Own" performance you reacted to came from the same show/performance. They are both performances from the 25th Anniversary of Les Mis. So again, that's why they are both stoic in those performances. It was the director's structure of the concert

The way that girl share her thoughts and opinion was really disrespectful for me. As what I have observed she's arrogant, just being true here, she's trying to say "if you don't like my reaction, just unsubscribe". I would be happy and glad if she said her thoughts about Lea in a nice way, like what ovela did. Lea's "On My Own" For me, was definitely perfect, it was amazing and she's a legend. Sorry, but the girl was just disrespectful, if you want to be respected, learn to respect as well. And another, it's not right to compare two artists with different kinds of fields in singing. Regine is good. Lea is amazing. Ovela you're doing good ❤️ but however, we all have different opinions it's just RESPECT what matters, most importantly to a LEGEND.

What you 2 need to understand is somehow you guys are discrediting a well respected and established artist like Lea Salonga! We take pride of her and the contribution she made for the Philippines.... she is not just some so and so artist, she's a legend!!! And when you guys say something less favorable to the artist, it does hurt us in a way because we know the greatness, that is Lea Salonga! Yes you guys are a reactor and yes it should be truthful but majority of your subscribers are Lea Salonga's people... out of respect it does not hurt to do a little research.... I am not a die hard fan of Lea but I know the work and pride that she brought to the country and even if I'm not a fan... I still have so much respect for her of what she have done expanding for decades.... YES you two will be slapped with page full of FACTS if you 2 dared to make a reaction towards another legend from the Philippines without doing your research! That's like me being from another country and reacting to let's say Tina Turner, I may not be her biggest fan and may not like her performance but regardless I will still respect her because of who she is... do it right or just don't do it... Blessings!

I've been watching your videos but this one, was not quite satisfied on how M-Angel reacted to the "bashing" and "people feeding info about the artist", she should have handled that in a more lenient way but still expressing her whole opinion. And I believe that she came up with that choice because of that factor.

Musicals are far different from pop. I fancy musicals because they narrate stories and lines by singing. So when they growl or suddenly shout, it’s part of the acting and delivering of emotions. Also, Lea sang as Eponine and Ruthie sang as Fantine in a concert, so they weren’t supposed to move for full vocal delivery; while the clip where Lea sang as Fantine was for a live musical performance with acting involved. In my opinion, the way the videos were recorded is not a factor in evaluating their vocal performance because it’s better to hear it raw from a fancam (because you can here how it sounds like on-site). ☺️

That of Ruthie's is from the 10th anniversary "concert" of Les Mis..they didn't really have to act, because it's a concert, they just needed to sing. You should have reacted to Lea's version during the 25th anniversary concert of Les Mis, she didn't have to act as well, she just had to sing. I think it would have been a fairer comparison. Nevertheless, I still prefer Lea's..she just sounds so amazing singing this song..

For Ruthie's performance (as well as Lea's On My Own), they are part of Les Miserables 10th Anniversary Concert. Its more of a concert/performance rather than an actual play, so all of the cast had to perform in front of their microphones, just standing. On the other hand, Lea's I Dreamed A Dream is an actual play, hence the more expressive facial expressions and movements.

Actually, the videos you reacted to of Ruthie Henshall singing "I Dreamed a Dream" and Lea Salonga singing "On My Own" were performed on the same concert. Ruthie did Fantine and Lea played Eponine. It's the Les Miserables 10th anniversary concert that's why they were just singing and not doing anything else, it's a concert. Also, I think maybe you should have reacted to Lea's version of "I Dreamed a Dream" on I think it's the Les Miserables 25th Anniversary concert, instead, where she was just also singing and not moving that much. Just to be fair and maybe, just maybe you will have a different opinion. Anyway, I still prefer Lea's concert version compare to Ruthie's concert version.1 second ago•

totally understand the verdict, some people just enjoy a more "opera-like" voice like ruthie's and some prefer a Broadway-like or "Disneyi" like kind of a voice like leah's . 1. "I like it when people move." Well sorry to disappoint you but if Ruthie 'moved', the mic wouldn't have been able to catch her voice. And no one would've been able to hear her. The mic wasn't taped to her head, like they do in theatre. And it's difficult enough to belt out these impressive notes, even when you're just standing still. 2. "Her voice transformed." That's called development. The character undergoes a certain change in this song: her dreams will never become reality. She first was optimistic, reminiscencing about her dream and how happy she was. But then reality came and so the voice changes to raw, broken. It's beautiful how much Ruthie was able to tell just with emotions. 3. When commenting on performances, take the setting and occasion in account. There is a huge difference between singing live, singing on stage, singing at an anniversary concert, singing in a movie and even lip-synching to a recording. You can't just compare two performances in entirely different settings of the same song. Have you seen Lea's On my own during the 10th anniversary? She barely moved as well.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this already below but let me just say this... Lea's ON MY OWN and Ruthie's I DREAMED A DREAM both came from the same show. Not much movement from these two performances the reason being that this was a concert, rather than an actual broadway performance. They still performed but in the context of a concert, the 10th year anniversary concert of Les Miserables. That's why. If I'm not mistaken, I guess the I Dreamed a Dream performance of Lea here is from an actual performance (during a run of a play), though they also made a concert (25th anniversary concert - this time she was Fantine, 15yrs before she was Eponine).

thanks for your reactions. i always appreciate your truthfulness and authenticity. to give more context, Ruthie's video and Lea's on my own video were both excerpts from the play's anniversary concert so they were not really acting but just performing for the audience just like any of the other performances in the whole concert. Lea's i dreamed a dream video was taken by someone watching the actual play which explains w u y she was moving around and expressing more. as always i appreciate all your opinions and comments. i like both videos and both artists but it's not an apples to apples comparison. thanks again.

You guys reacted to it a while back (Jan.7, 2017). Lea's performance as Fantine singing I Dream A Dream was taken incognito during an actual performance. Lea’s performance of On My Own and Ruthie’s I dreamed a dream are Tributes to Mr. Producer (Cameron Mackintosh) so it’s not the actual play.

The clip of Lea Salonga's performance of I Dream A Dream is from the actual play while her On My Own is from a musical concert, pretty much the same with Ruthie's video here.

I just watched both videos, first of all I love lea salonga!!!! Really!!!! but honestly my tears fell when i was watching ruthie's video despite her limited movements. The way she sung it, her voice says it all, i could feel her sadness, hopelessness and numbness from all the pain she went thru. And her sudden growls added to it, her pain was like magnified 100x. I felt these are two different versions of Fantine because Lea on the other hand , seem like she performed the 'angrier' version, she's in pain but you can feel not just sadness but the anger thru her facial expression.

The video of Ruthie's IDAD and Lea's OMO was taken from the 10th year anniversary concert Dream Cast for Les Miserables where they both were part of hence the performances seemed "stoic"

I'm filipino but i have to say i really like your honest opinions involving filipino artist. Just for info Ruthie Henshall performance was from a les miserables concert just like lea's on my own video. You might want to check out the video of lea salonga's i dreamed a dream from a les misarables concert. You might also want to check out her videos from miss saigon which earned her a Tony award.

As usual, love love love your comments guys! Thank God for some honesty! 💗💗💗 (and more 💗s for the both of you!) Only thing I can say... is how annoyed I am to these people giving you the wrong videos! I dont think it's an apples to apples VS considering one is a concert performance and the other is an actual play performance! That video of Ruthie is the 1995 anniversary concert I think? Where she played Fantine and Lea sang that On My Own piece. Lea played Fantine in 2010 anniversary concert. That could've been a better comparison. Both stoic 😂 But seriously, both had play-like performances and concert performances of the same character too! Wish those videos were used instead. Anyway, cheers to you! To more reactions! 🎊🎉

Salonga did play the roles of Éponine and Fantine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway. She also portrayed Éponine and Fantine, respectively, in the musical's 10th and 25th anniversary concerts in London. That's were she just standing while singing.

i really have to dislike because they know nothing about singing in a musical. well, reactions are subjective but at least they have to be objective as much as possible. To appreciate Lea's version, you have to watch her acting out the song while singing. Unlike with Ruthie, you don't need to watch the video because you can already feel the emotion when she sings. A good stage actor must master the skill of evoking emotions in their voice when they sing so that those who are seated far from the stage can understand the story of the song. #thinkingoutloud

"To appreciate Lea's version, you have to watch her acting out the song while singing." Not really. Her interpretation is plenty expressive. Different from Ruthie's but expressive nonetheless.

I actually subscribed to your channel when you gave a less than glowing reaction to a performance and you gave feedback on not just the vocals but also the audio and visuals. I wanted a more objective reaction and one with more depth. It's always good to have your favorite's skills validated by others' positive reaction but I am also interested in a more objective reaction, bec sometimes we lose objectivity regarding our faves. So bring it on! =D I do want to add, that with performances like these and songs like this, when both are both highly skilled, it comes down to which voice quality you prefer, and which artistic interpretation you prefer. I think (my impression only) that Lea interpreted it with more visible anger and frustration along with the despair. Ruthie (perhaps bec of the setting - a concert instead of an actual play like Lea's clip) had less visible anger, more despair and a bit of defeat. So whichever emotion resonates more with you is what you will prefer. I preferred Lea's tone than Ruthie's but I acknowledge that it is very powerful and awesome too. I had goosebumps when I watched Lea's clip before, so her anger and frustration touched me more. But I don't know how Ruthie would have done it in the actual play. But for these 2 clips, I prefer Lea. It's not better, I just preferred her performance.

Ruthie was performing during an anniversary show of Les Miserables at Royal Albert Hall that's why she was just in front of the microphone. The video of Lea's performance was actually taken during the musical's regular show.

This is one of the most interesting reactions out there. To be fair, no one in the present time (at least in my experience) downplayed or criticized (in a way) Lea Salonga and her craft since she’s already proven herself. So these kinds of thoughts are new to my ears and thus interesting in a way.

Maybe some of them will burst unto anger and disappointment and comments the meanest comment they have but You must learn to handle it bec. I think when Leah performed, it was taken from the actual broadway show, while Ruthie's performance was taken from the concert. An anniversay concert just like when we saw Leah performed On my own. You should find Ruthie's actual performance on the broadway. Beacause its hard to compare both performances in different circumstances. Just a thought.

It happened because of the settings. If you observed there was a stoic part, also there was moving performance. Lets say when they were stoic its a performance of the anniversary of the play while when they were moving its the play itself. Yeah true its because of the directions. I love mgn. Especially the humor and intelligence! Keep it up.

re: your comment about you prefer that they move because it's a play... The video you watched Ruthie singing was the 10th anniversary concert (the very same concert where lea sang the song 'on my own' - the one you previously watched and commented also as lacking in movement )... Again, that was the Le Miz 10th anniversary concert - the reason why you did not see more of the 'play' elements. On the other hand, the video you watched Lea singing I dreamed the dream was on Broadway (if I am not mistaken), a play, which required the needed movements...and the reason why you saw lea as more expressive. On comparing Lea's and Ruthie's I dreamed the dream, you should have compared the Les Miz 10th anniversary (where Ruthie was the Fantine) and 25th anniversary (where Lea was the Fantine).

For singing comparison of the same song between Lea & Ruthie...you should have used Ruthies' Fantine on the 10th Anniversary stage to Lea's performance of the same character on the 25th Les Mes Anniversary, as both performances in the anniversary of the characters are staionary. The same with your comparison of Eponine between Lea & Regine. The 10th & 25th Les Mis Anniversary specials is the best choice for comparison between performances of the same characters becasue 1. both are recorded professonally with live orchestra, 2. both characters are to convey/interpret the same song in one spot, so with that same advantage/disadvanage you can both judge them fairly. Both actors had limitations on the anniversary special, simply because that is how the stage was set up...the microphones are stationary, compared to the one in the musical theater where the mic is on them thus allowing them to move. The anniversary stage is more challenging due to it limiting the actors ability to express their emotions with actions, so they have to use more of their eyes and lips instead to convey emotion. Both are amazing musical actress and at the end of the day it is not really who is better between the 2 technically....but who touched your hearts more in the performance.
