I doubt there was any evil intent behind the performance. I'm pretty sure that a Nigerian Valjean would have been perfectly welcome. As for the gender thing, Valjean IS male in the play. You could change the script, like performing Hamlet with all-female roles, but then you would have a new piece of art, not the original. I agree that the message in the song is universal -a call for people to overcome persecution and adversity.

Takeshi Kaga is very well known for his voice - speaking and acting. In fact, when they dubbed Iron Chef Japan, they kept anything he was on screen speaking not dubbed (but subtitled) because the voice actor didn’t fit. (He is the chairman for the Japan shows).

I can only imagine how powerful this must have been to experience in person rather than through an old video. Because even through this video, you can hear just how powerful everyone's voices are together so I can only imagine hearing how booming it must have felt to witness this in person.

It shows just how truly international Les Miserables is. On the face of it it's the story of 19th century French protestors but it speaks to ALL people who are being downtrodden and have no rights.

It is only about 20 or so countries that have translated versions though. I'd argue that this song actually represents a very Western view of revolution. Which makes sense, it is a French song. I'd say that it's not as translatable to other non-Western cultures as it may seem.

Denmark is exactly how I imagine Valjean I kinda wished that France had a bigger part in this rendition bc the story took place in the country but the concert just seemed absolutely breathtaking I loved hearing Lea through the chorus of Valjeans, what a strong voice! It must have been such a memorable night for all the performers, musicians, and audience members involved

It’s more the fact that all 17 valjeans shared 3 mics whereas quast and Lea had their own that’s why their voice carries through the union, however I agree., I love this song

Kurt Ravn who was the Danish was a magnificent Jean Valjean, really amazing. Stig Rossen is another Danish actor who has been Jean Veljean, however on West End. There is a beautiful video online of them singing together. Really great Valjeans both of them.

Robert Marien who performed in French is actually Canadian - and has performed the role in New York, London and Paris, in both English and French.

It’s a testament to how amazing Phillip Quast was that with 17 Valjeans he could still be fully heard

When I saw this video, I was very moved by the voices of all the singers. Among them, the singing voice of Michael Burgess in Canada was the most transparent I've heard, and the lyrics directly touched my heart. I was looking for another song, but I couldn't stop crying knowing that he had died in 2015. I'd like to go there again if there's a 20th anniversary concert.

I really liked how each person and the language they are speaking influences sa singing and vocal techniques that enhances the "feelings" of the song My favourite parts are the Japanese and the key change during the Irish part. So incredible!!!!

Japanese Valjean is the Iron Chef chairman. Also, I love the look on his face when he finishes his line. It's like "Hmm, did I forget to unlock the back door when I left the house?"

Ireland, Austria, and Iceland totally slayed it.

Fun fact, Egill has appeared in two productions of Les Miserables here in Iceland. And playing a different leading role each time, first Valjean, then Javert. Wonder how many actors/singers can say the same (suspect not that many)

That facial expression he makes is very much in the character of his "Chairman Kaga" persona. I almost expect him to shout out today's mystery ingredient afterwards.

@@stephenthompson4912 Several of the Valjean's aren't actually from the country they represent but they appeared in a production in that country. The other one I remember is Jeff Leyton (Ireland)who is actually from Scotland.

There isn't actually an Englishman here. Colm Wilkinson, who's representing Britain, because he originated the role on the West End, is Irish.

Don't EVER tell me what I do or do not have gibson. In fact I spent two weeks biking on the coast of Normandy in June. I know EXACTLY what the understanding and history of liberty is. This is simply put beautiful. A song about overcoming barriers to come together being sung by a bunch of artists. Passionate artists about what they do and you can hear it in their voices.

Hands down, best musical ever written... Goosebumps every time I hear the first notes. I will always regret not having seen the original performance on stage with Colm Wilkinson, in my opinion the one and only Valjean...
