That's a pretty paperweight you've made there. Restoration would imply that you could put the tool back to work. Your "wedge" isn't wedging anything. The grain run out, while pretty, will cause the handle to fail under any rigorous use. It would be a race to see if the hammer head flew off or the handle broke first.

Hey man, I genuinely learned something new and useful here! I looked up “grain run” per your comment btw. I agree that someone doing this level of “restoration” should go the extra bit to make it functional, showpiece or not.
Just awesome. Beautiful job! Thanks
The finished hammer looks great. The wood is awesome. Love the handle.

I dig the music just fine. I watch in appreciation of your skills. And you got skills bro!

Came out awesome as a wall hanger! Unfortunately not a useful tool, the hammer is imbalanced needs an additional 2Cm. of steel added to the face, and the brass plate addition to the handle will fly off if used vigorously for some time, there is no glue that will withstand the vibration. Looks good though! Additionally when filing stroke in one direction only, pulling back your file with pressure only dulls the file.
Really brought that hammer back to life

Much respect to the process of restoring this tool. Direct and to the point. Grind off the rust and reshape the metal. No time wasted soaking, sandblasting, wire brush scrubbing, etc… A craftsman that optimizes his time.💯

I much prefer restoration videos like this where the item is actually “restored” and not modified, made cooler, or completely repurposed from it’s origin.

Very nice restoration. That is a blacksmiths top fuller, which is why the face was so mushroomed and also why it weighed so little.

Isn't that too light for a blacksmith's hammer?
@whilomforge3402
2 жыл бұрын
@@ITBR_Restoration not necessarily. A hammer is sized according to the size and type of material being worked usually. So, for working small material it wouldn’t be too light. That said, I’m almost 100% positive that this was a top fuller.

Nice job , but when you weighed the hammer, I thought you were going to weld on a piece that would have brought the hammer back up to it's original weight of 561 kgs.
How pretty. Useless but pretty.
Is there a reason for waiting until assembled to do the finishing coat on the handle? I would think that be done prior to assembly (so all the wood is coated), then just do the top little bit after cutting the wedge top off.

Ironically I’ve never thought about doing that myself. I’ve made a few of my own smaller 8oz rip hammer and ball peen hammer with stubby hickory handles, I use them in my trade for small cable clips or tapcon/concrete anchor inserts. I always waited till the end of the build to coat the handle in a few layers of Butcher Block Oil. But don’t the whole piece prior to putting the hammer head on wouldn’t hurt I don’t think?
Can I have that hammer 🤩
Vai procurar o que fazer.
What is the name and brand of thar grinding stone ?
A restoration would be to bring an old hammer into its original condition. You took an old hammer and made a new hammer.
now the sickle

I wonder why tf would anyone polish hammers faces to mirror. It makes no sense to me. They sure look nice, but will be beaten while using it. Nice hammer tho.

They are made to be shelf queens. Looks good on a shelf in a very dry room. Forever clear and crispy. Not meant for use. However, I do poopoo their shafts. They are not good looking, not suited for human hands. And please six layers of ship's laquer for the shaft from top to toe.
Why did you flatten the cross peen on the hammer? It should be rounded off not flat.
