Russian Tank that Fooled The internet

A picture of this tank came out recently. It appears to be a picture of a Russian T-62M tank, modified with a lot of components from the T-90M, the most modern Russian tank in active service. And it spread like wildfire. Everyone started talking about it, pro russian, pro ukrainian, it doesn't matter, twitter, telegram, all kinds of platforms, even media articles started to be written about it.

Its been pointed out to me that it is possible that this tank is a vismod to make a T-62 look like T-90M while ignoring any practicality, so its possible its not photoshop fake, but a physical fake thats just been modified to look like T-90M as much as possible, the "transparent" sight could be just a weird shadow. Leaving this comment here just in case. But if it does turn out to be a physical vismod, I will make a followup video. I would honestly prefer it to be that because it would be so much more interesting, so Im hoping we do get more pictures or even a video, if its a vismod.

    1. Your point about ERA alignment is moot if we consider it to be a T-62 turret. 2. Lights constricting the periscopes isn't convincing, especially given Russians often partially constrict sightlines and turret traverse (think cope cages). The light would create a blind spot directly in front of the tank, but wouldn't construct sight much otherwise. 3. The Muzzle Reference Sensor being on wrong I can't speak to, as I don't know if it does or does not work in that position. 4. The spotlight outline argument is unconvincing, it doesn't even align perfectly and a professional photoshopper wouldn't leave a layer partially transparent. 5. The RWS is clearly an incomplete frame, hence why it looks the way it does. Occam's razor suggests that someone going out of there way to make this as an extremely high quality photoshop, only to have it posted to an obscure Telegram channel by a volunteer and possibly soldier's wife/relative is far less likely than the tank being real.

Its possible that they really do have a sensibly upgraded T-62, and this bad Photoshop has been released as a smoke screen so that everybody runs around claiming the upgraded T-62 is a hoax. However, if Russia has worked out a sensible modernization upgrade for the T-62, that would make a lot of sense.

You shouldn't think that North Korea has bad weapons. Even we in Russia were interested in some of their developments. Artillery, as far as I know, is not inferior in range to American ones, and in some versions it is better! You have to be objective so as not to be a fool! North Korea has nuclear weapons and missiles capable of bringing them to the United States. Believe me, it will make no difference to you which high-explosive shell will kill you, from a modernized T-62 or T-90M.

If it’s real it raises several interesting implications, first the fact it’s equipped with either Sosna-U or PNM-T is by itself a mayor improvement in FCS as well as situational awareness. Both Sosna-U and PNM-T posses automatic tracking capability and their thermal imagers have greater detection range compared to the 1PN96MT-02 that lacks either automatic tracking or lead capabilities, is uncooled and limited to a range of 2,500-3,000 km range. The addition of Relikt ERA also increases the protection somewhat. Second but more interestingly, the fact the Russians would equipped a vintage reserve tank like this one with equipment reserved for more capable vehicles like T-72B3, T-80BVM or T-90M could indicate that the availability of advanced thermal sights like the Sosna-U and PNM-T has increased to the point even vintage T-62s can be equipped with it, that by itself could also suggest amongst other possibilities that production has increased and or the bottlenecks that were limiting production have been resolved or mitigated at least.

If we compare the 6 vertical (about 10 inches long) screwed elements on down side of frontal armor, of glacis plate, we can see that they have about the same size and position than T62 pictures seen in this video. T62 has only one headlight on glacis, ... T90 has two ... well, where is the difficulty to instal two headlight on modified T62 glacis ? Based on this observation, down side of this tank seems based on T62. Concerning the turret, ... each element on this turret can be adapted and placed on a modified T62 turret.

To some-one who does really know what other Russian tanks look like, they did a pretty good job, because the perspectives (nothing tapers off in the wrong direction) and lighting (shadows are in the right places, unlike the infamous "upside peas") all seem consistent. The slightly wonky ERA isn't really a giveaway, it looks like it *could* be a field modification to go with the cope cage, but the headlight and the other features on the turret do look weirder the closer you look. Actually, the size an position of the cope-cage make it look like they copied the front of a T-90M turret (main gun and all) and had to drop it down slightly to fit, because stretching to fit would have left the gun muzzle more obviously oval (T-90M turret being much wider than tall) and *that's also* why the turret seems a bit too close to front of the hull. I'm thinking like some-one who did a lot of Somethingawful photoplasty competitions back in the day, not really from a "I know a lot about tanks" perspective, because that would be a lie.

if it weren't for the obvious technical problems with equipment overlapping and a little bit better job with ERA placement they could deceive as for some time xD but i doubt Russia would even upgrade T-62, because that upgrade would probably cost more then the tank itself, T-62 is good as a mobile artillery or support in the background the only thing they could do with T-62 is make armored vehicle from it, like Israelis
