The Actual Worst Tank? M-55S

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In my video, "The Worst Tank in The World - TR-85M1", where I talk about Romanian TR-85M1 and how it is possibly the worst "modern" tank that is still in use.
And in that video I asked what people think might actually be the worst tank since I might not be aware of some of them. And most popular response was the Slovenian M-55S tank.

We would appreciate the mention that the M-55S and the video is from the Park of Military History Pivka and our channel. The tank is in our working collection, and it is a blast to drive! Ya, but remember its pedigree, the T-34 & T-44 for the haul, and IS-2 for the turret. When, Churchill and Western Generals witnessed the Victory Parade in Berlin, they nearly went into cardiac arrest when they saw the IS-2’s and IS-3’s. Compared to anemically armed and armoured Limey/Yanky tanks, the IS-series were monsters, and had the desired intimidation value.

Tank-to-tank battles are rare, so the 28 tanks will come in handy for some Territorial Defense units holding the line or on the frontier with Bielorussia. I would guess that they will be organized into platoons of 4 tanks each, in order to compensate their lower levels of firepower, but make the best use of better systems than legacy T-72.

If you give T90, Abrams or Leo2 to a poorly trained crew they would not have a lot of chances against well trained crew in this T55S. And there won't occur any new ammo as there are only two other 100mm guns in active service: 1st russian 2A70, used on BMP-3 which is a low pressure gun, and 2nd MT-12, which is a smoothbore gun. Neither's ammo is interchangable with D-10T (rifled, full pre)ssure while the latter is obsolete as well. The only rays of hope are atgm like tandem shaped 9M117M1 "Arkan" providing penetration of 750mm after ERA, which is neither state of the art nor great but not that bad. But only T-55M and T-55AM received the necessary guidance equipment so you would have to add this. And a tank cannot rely on atgm solely.

Sorta like the M60 upgrades STILL on the market, these upgrades arent really to be used in tank-on-tank combat. Just having heavy armor in an area or situation where there is no other real heavy armor, REGARDLESS of what YOUR heavy armor is, is a big deal. Hell, having a WWII T34 against guys in trucks with machine guns is a major up to your side. Having an upgraded T55 with ERA, laser warning, and even passive NV is better than not having heavy armor at all.

This is not a bad vehicle for Ukraine by any means. 1. It has more than enough protection against small arms and even heavy machine guns. (given they don't expose the sides and rear if we talking about autocannons and stuff) 2. ERA that can stop any light AT weapon Russia has. 3. Laser tracking system. 4. Thermals? 5. Enough protection for most indirect arty hits. Pretty much heavy armored IFV with comparatively great firepower not to mention it is soviet so Ukrainian crews can be trained using it within days.

The gun is what makes the M-55S valuable to Ukraine. The British gun is compatible with a wide range of modern ammunition, including armor-piercing sabot rounds that can penetrate the armor of a modern T-72. More importantly, several Western companies produce 105-millimeter shells, meaning Ukraine shouldn’t struggle to maintain a steady supply of ammunition for its single M-55S battalion.

The tank was a 'child' of Balkan wars and sanctions imposed on Slovenia, making T-55, which were inherited from EX-YU in bad state, suitable for use. Ignoring all the politicizing in Slovenia how the money has been spent it must be remembered that this project was meant to deter any sort of para-state attack on Slovenia and is a part of a larger package of arms that was bought including the towed Soltam TN90 guns and 120mm Soltam mortars. Kfir jets were also evaluated but later the decision was made for F-16 (examples that were not sold to Pakistan due to nuclear sanctions) and Cobra gunship combo, all of which were scrapped when things got back to normal in Ex-YU. . The battlefields of the 90's were at the nearest point 45 kilometers from Slovenia. The tank was mostly expected to be fighting against WW2 stock as well as T-55 of ex-JLA. It was also meant to bolster the Slovenian arms industry, directing it into 'western' weapons systems. Technical details, the armor is a Blazer, so called Super Blazer (what that should mean is unclear), all together the modernization cost around 52 million euros, for 30 tanks, with all the ammo and spare parts around 2,6 millions was spent on each tank. Most of the work was done in steel works Ravne ST. One was sold with ammunition on public auction two years ago, for the rest of 27 no buyer was found and they are in deep storage while one is meant as a museum piece. The price paid for the one sold was 820 000 euros.

TBH, considering the T62s present, they're...in many ways superior to those. A tank is better than no tank, and a tank with proper structure is better than none. The thing is, despite people in these comments calling these things useless, the L7 gun is more than capable of dealing with threats. I'm sure though, they'll avoid using them as 'anti tank' vehicles, and likely in an infantry support role--or very likely as trainers. Ukraine does need to continue training soldiers. More then that, a number of parts, due to soviet doctrine are usable on Ukrainian T64s. Even if they're not used as is for more than trainers--the parts that come with any sale could be used in centralized repair resources to fix road wheels, as an example.

I think it’s going to take a while before Ukraine starts using them even if they do because of the amount of T-72 type tanks from most eastern block countries they have been given and what they are capturing from Russia

Ehh... A but more complicated. TR-85M1 is a FCS upgrade over the TR-85, which is a mobility upgrade over the TR-77, which is a slightly modified T-55.

Can you talk about the Brazilian Leopard 1a5 and 1a1? I think you can get a punch of information and it would be pretty cool. I can help you a little bit with that...

Better than the T-62 Russia send to Ukraine. The T-55S is more comparable to the earliest versions of T-72 Also the 105mm gun designed to use NATO ammo, and can knock out most T-72 variants.

The tanks are, to my knowledge no longer on sale. There was some discomfort among Slovenian armed forces officers and public for selling the tanks, considering they have been upgraded not so long ago, also since Slovenia does not have that many tanks and the costs of keeping them in storage are almost nonexistent...... So as far as I know, they are stored in warehouse for foreseeable future....
