If my memory is correct it was a 1950s S band radar that tracked the F-117 stealth it's why it operational life was so short. The Russians have put huge efforts into air defense. The us not so much

@@jquall1 yes and it was shot down in the 90s using a ancient 1950s era S-band radar. The designers of stealth did not take in to account someone still using a radar that old. The carbon fibers in the aircraft works well for high frequency radar not the lower ones. Also the heat signature from it's engines was not hidden very well unlike newer F-35's

Russian air defense networks are so multilayered and intricate that they are able to detect and track just about anything. There are always gaps in coverage due to topography and other issues that create ground clutter but they have such an extensive number of bands and frequencies across multiple systems that it would be a total nightmare for the USAF. Air defense has reached a point where stealth is very very questionable and probably useless in a war of attrition where one side doesn't have an advantage that is extreme like in Iraq or Afghanistan. This is just technology catching up to theory from WWII as rockets, radar, computer processing, guidance systems, and sensors have all reached levels to where aircraft are going to have a very short life span in a war among peer competitor states with extensive air defenses numbering in the thousands. You just cannot expect to eliminate or suppress them in these kinds of numbers and the battle for air supremacy will go on indefinitely until attrition and the battle of production determines the outcome. Warfare is an ever-changing battle of countering the opponents advantages and gaining your own advantage and air power is no different than any other part of war.

True, but the new problem is the drone war. Add endless numbers of cheap drones, many of which can be armed with anti radiation missiles, and the theater quickly becomes as dangerous for the SAM operators as anyone else. The next major conventional confrontation between major states (if there is one) will likely involve numerous drones of many types and levels both autonomous and remotely piloted fighting out a war of bait and switch, counter drone warfare, anti-whatever you got.

@@smgdfcmfah In the near to distant future but a current conflict is still going to be dominated by air defense which can also destroy drones especially ones large enough to carry a missile. Just look at how quickly Bayraktar drones were made irrelevant to the conflict or how the reaper was taken out despite trying to sneak in and do reconnaissance. These air defense systems are made to stop drones as well and there isn't a way to make anything invisible to radar only low observability. So while drones are great they aren't going to eliminate air defense networks and by the next major war drones may find themselves in the same boat as these aircraft where they cannot survive over enemy air space because that gap in air defense is already being eliminated by the more modern designs like the S-450, S-500, and Pantsir S etc. Once those are made in the thousands they have tens of thousands of air defense systems to destroy along with electronic countermeasures while the production of the systems continues. Again it will be a race over production and a war of attrition.

@@theprinceofcrows8691 I disagree. Look what's happening right now in Ukraine - and that's two relatively poor, backward nations fighting it out in close quarters. The point of drones is that they can easily be made to look far bigger and more threatening than they are to a search radar and any AA system could easily be overwhelmed these days with low cost junk. The worst thing an AA system can be faced with is a theater saturated with targets with no way of knowing which might be dangerous. Even a top notch air defense network would quickly "blow its load" on a coordinated attack. Throw in stealth and wild weasel aircraft along with some long range rocket artillery and/or some other long range stand off weapons targeted by deep interdiction troops behind the lines and/or satellites and you basically lose the AA system on day one. This, in a nutshell, is what happened in Iraq the first time without the swarms of decoy drones, let alone the armed drones. I can only imagine what the U.S. has ready for their next conflict, let alone what they're working on right now after watching the Russian war machine fail so miserably in Ukraine.

Praise the Lord for Russia's resourcefulness of Intelligence

It's a pity in the modern world we can't direct these minds to work in a worldly direction.

The radar can detect a X-15 in a museum in the United States? Because that's the only hypersonic aircraft to have flown. No your toy can't track a F-35 beyond the range of an AGM-88G AARGM-ER which makes it just so much potential scrap metal. The Nebo-M is a combination of radars two of which are low frequency radars. VHF radars can detect but not track Low observable objects at long range. UHF radars can't detect them at long range at all. It's a very good radar system but it's just as vulnerable to stealth as any other.

I don't think so. I don't think it will be able to detect small off the shelf EPO foam UAVs. The foam is mostly air and very difficult if not impossible to detect. It would have to be a small foam toy rc plane with a small explosive which would knock out the radar. Most people don't realize how advanced the rc toy aircraft are. With a $75 lidar system, a $50 camera, a $50 flight controller, and a cheap Raspberry Pi processor with image files, you could easily build a fully autonomous UAV that will fly nap of the earth, identify specific targets, and crash into them with a small explosive. You don't even need GPS which can be jammed, or a video link to fly the plane. It can be completely autonomous.
