Russell Westbrook - Defensive Dynamo

Спорт

Aggression amplified. Erratic and explosive. Forceful and fearless. That’s what I think when Russ is on the basketball court, and especially when he’s poked the ball lose, and he’s out on the break. It’s going to be exciting, but also infectiously intense. The UCLA bruin ruins the other team’s game-plan through sheer force of will. He’ll chase after the ball no matter where it is, and who has it. Arguably the best athlete in the NBA, certainly the most relentlessly reckless, Westbrook assaults ball handlers like he does rims, which makes him one of the most entertaining players in the league.
At first I was apprehensive about putting together a Russell Westbrook video because a lot of it is him flying around trying to poke the ball out, playing the passing lanes, and such. That isn’t the type of defense I wanted to focus on because that’s the stuff that’ll get you on Sportscenter, but not necessarily the stuff that’ll win you a game. Gambling is NOT fundamentally sound. It was only after someone commented that it might not be fundamentally sound but it is FUN, that I started to consider it. My videos are often about what a player does well, and as long as we all understand that this rampaging style of defense is not the type that should be taught, we can appreciate how much havoc this dude creates.

    Ur basically contradicting urself in the sense that he gambles too much. Thats called instincts and MJ and other defensive players play the same way bcuz theyre trying to make a play. Idk what ur biased ass is talking bout, but Russ wins the majority of his gambles. Hes one of the smartest and instinctive defensive PGs other than CP3. The difference betwenn those 2 is that Russ is bigger, faster, stronger and more athletic than CP3, hes usually top 3 in yhe league in steals and has a good block ratio as well. Go ahead though and tell us what u think u know ur talking bout...

    @@alexsaenz128 just because ur top 3 in steals it does not make u a good defender. Gambling on defense is good when you get the steal but terrible when you don’t. It typically leads to dribble drives and it gives up open 3’s. Which is a big reason they lost to golden state

  • @EvinGualberto

    @EvinGualberto

    8 жыл бұрын

    It depends. If you ACTUALLY watched the WCF, you'd know that the first few games, he was measured, and disciplined, and a lot of experts agreed that he was essentially playing the best defense of his career. He regressed to his trying to make home run plays every time, and that led to OKC's downfall. Also. Yes. We all know that his gambling gets him out of position and costs points. maybe read the description before commenting something that's already been said (in the description)? It could probably help. Just a suggestion.

    +Evin Gualberto That's ignorant to say, because many people think Westbrook is a great defender which isn't the case. So "We all" do not know that. I wasn't saying he's a bad defender becasue I don't like him, He is one of my favorite players in the league. There are games where he isn't doing anything helpful on the floor. He's just out there. Him and KD got to learn to trust in their team and the scheme. Any time OKC is in crunch time it turns into the KD and Russ iso show. That team is wayyy to talented for them to be jacking up bad shots when there are other players wide open. This also attributed to his bad defense. He's doing way too much offensively it hurts him on the defensive end. Don't get me wrong, he has improved tremendously across the board.. especially as a passer, but offensively he got to get and keep his teammates better involved. Learn HE DOESN'T have to make the play to "make the play"

  • @EvinGualberto

    @EvinGualberto

    8 жыл бұрын

    "WE ALL" know that via reading the description was all I meant to say, but that was my mistake to even imply an assumption. I agree with what you are saying, I was only saying that I tried to make it clear in my description that he does a lot more harm than good when he gambles. Also, I don't think he's doing too much offensively that it hurts him on defense. I think his absolutely erratic play has been slowed down a little, and he's been more patient and measured with his attacking; part of that is maturity and understanding what the team needs. I think his defense in the Spurs series and early in the WCF set the tone for the team, and he helped the Thunder along in a way that probably no one else could have. The world is still waiting for him to finally put it all together though.

    Chris Paul same thing. gambles for lots of steals but was outplayed head to head in the playoffs by Billups, Curry, Westbrook, and Tony Parker in 2012. in 2012 both Parker and CP3 played garbage in Game 1 (7-11 on 1/9 and 6-10 on 3/13) but over the last 3 games Parker outplayed him 21-4-7 on 40% to 15-4-9 on 41% and he got to the line way more often. and in the 2008 WCSF Parker put up the same numbers on Paul that he averaged in the regular season. in 2015 Parker played with an injured achilles quadriceps and ankle which is why his playoff numbers were bad

    He's really not that good of a defender. His on ball/perimeter defense is literally among the worst in the league. Most of these steals are just bad passes, huge gambles(which most of the time results in his being beat and the other team scoring easily), or him just being faster. Same with the blocks. Most of them are come from behind/help defense because the other team underestimated his athleticism/makeup speed and he got there. He's not a rim protector and I don't think anyone is afraid to go straight up with him. I mean some of these plays he didn't even poke the ball away himself, he's just faster than anyone else and ran to the ball. That doesn't mean he has good defense lol. He's an elite athlete and that's why he gets these highlights. To put what real defense is into perspective, imagine Kawhi Leonard being as fast/athletic as Westbrook. Not trying so be a hater but he makes a lot of mistakes as far as basketball IQ and gets bailed out by his athleticism. I'd love to see how he does in his later years.

    +kidclutch9 I DID say that it isn't good defense, it's fun to watch, but it's mostly wild and certainly not sound.
