Tony Allen - Lockdown

Спорт

Tony Allen is unrelenting. He hounds his mark all over the court. He’ll fight through every screen and beat you to your spots. Intelligent, energetic and supremely athletic, Allen single-handedly decimates the offensive game plan. He does so because he’s thorough in his preparation and that allows him to be the perfect perimeter defender. He knows what your sets are, where you want to go, and what you want to do, and he’ll make sure you can’t get a single one of those. He’s tough, but it’s physicality with purpose, and most of the time, his body control is such that he’s playing smart, clean defense and it’s just a marvel to behold.
Kobe Bryant said of Allen that, “he plays harder than everybody else defensively.” He’s almost impossible to get away from, because his aggressiveness and know-how allow him to stay connected to his man around myriad screens. He knows when to bump down, when to stunt, and when to lean (especially when he’s giving up around 6 inches or so to Kevin Durant). Above all else, he's an NBA champion.
This video isn’t about him getting steals or blocking shots, although, of course, those are featured. It’s about how he gets into his opponents and outworks them. He’s in-sync with his teammates, always communicating, and sinking-and-filling when needed. The most impressive thing I’ve seen in a little while is how he can contest and leave his hand right in the opponent’s face without fouling even if they get him off his feet and flying by (3:57). Sometimes his opponents’ don’t know where he’s coming from or what he’s going to do, but one thing is for sure: the Grindfather and his defense are an absolute pleasure to watch.

His general instincts are unique. He a lot of times gets burned by lower-tier players. It's LITERALLY impossible for this guy to be screened, he has a lot of moves to avoid being screened. I've been watching the grizz basically since he first arrived to memphis from the celts. And I've seen him spin to avoid screens, follow the offensive player's path, and just straight up push his way through. It's really hard to explain what makes him so unique as a defender but the best way to put it is... Dropping 30 pts doesn't excite him...if he achieved the record of forced turnovers in a game, that would excite him. He's an NBA player only because he can defend anyone 1-4

Greatest defender ever is a huge exageration and that's coming from a Tony Allen fan. When it comes to on ball defense, he's the best I've seen at his position, but that's not the same as being the best defender ever. Guys like Hakeem and David Robinson had bigger defensive impacts due to being rim protectors who could also spread the floor. Guys like that combined great on ball defense with tons of blocks, rim protection and even getting 2+ steals per game.

Plus, this is not a pound for pound discussion, otherwise guys like Iverson would be in the Goat debate, it's simply about who had more defensive impact and those are the big man. That doesn't mean I'd pick Ewing over Rodman, but there are many factors at hand.

Ive watched ALL generations of this game... Tony allen is the best wing defensive player I have ever seen. ive watched jrue, michael cooper, bruce bowen, jordan/pippen, sidney moncrief, alvin robertson, the glove, artest, etc. Theres no wing guard/forward with the level of intensity and passion defensively i have ever seen than allen. Kobe, Durant said he was the toughest ever, and lebron put him in the top 3. Watch he denies the ball precatch, so it forces the player to get the ball where they DONT want it or he intercepts it. Then he puts pressure and shows hands so the player hesitates to get to their spot. He has a strong base but it is one of the quickest laterally i have EVER seen. He gambles a lot to steal but his recovery instinct and agility is unmatched... He is the definition of grit and grind and earned his due! Ever guard in the nation has to watch and learn from a video like this. It is a masterclass on how to lockdown...

Nice Meme Until they get a glue guy at the SF position,They wont reach the finals. And I love watching the Grizzlies. The Grit N Grind style is polar opposite of most teams in the west. But Tony Allen cannot start for a contender. He's too much of an offensive liability. The Rudy Gay trade sortve hurt them in the long run because he could actually score and defend(When engaged). They still miss that production.

+Prince Cyrill i agree but memphis cant even score over 100 points. The last team I remember winning a title not scoring over 100 ppg is the 2004 pistons in which they had arguably the greatest TEAM defense of all time allowing only 84 pog which is incredible! I say the rudy trade hurt them is because memphis has had this huge hole at SF for the last 2.5 years and has gotten virtually no production from that spot. They have had stop gap guys like James Johnson Tayshaun Prince but neither one of those guys consistently produce at a high level on offense to prevent teams from double teaming gasol or randolph
