Great interview...I became a vegetarian after working at a dialysis clinic. Some were there due to conditions beyond their control and others could have simply made healthier food choices to reverse their conditions and chose not to. It just made me hyper aware of my health and what I put into my body. This food is killing us slowly and especially black people. It's worst than a crack addiction. I am a living example that you don't need meat to live and you won't look like a heroin addict. Even if you don't want to give up meat, cut back. Make meat a luxury. Your body and your pockets will thank you.

+MsANAIT Once I watched 'Food Inc', I gave up beef and pork immediately and only eat REAL organic chicken. I also do 'Meetless Mondays'. I had a second cousin who fit every statistic--black, overweight, sedentary lifestyle, smoker since teenage years. She had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Because she was poor, she didn't have a primary physician. I tried to educate her about changing her diet--to no avail. At 53 years old, her 7 year old grandson found her dead the last day of Christmas break from school. The autopsy came back inconclusive. The rest of the family is in denial about her cause of death, but I know why she died.

***** Vegetarianism isn't very hard at all. I'm not completely veggie, but I forgo meat at least 3 times a week. There are tons of vegetarian casseroles that can be made. And veggies can be cheap if you shop the frozen aisle. Mushrooms are GREAT substitutes if you want the consistency of meat. They can be used in pastas, casseroles, etc. The portobello on the grill and dressed as a hamburger, with all the fixings, with a really good hamburger bun is beyond delicious! Also, BBQ mushrooms is the best! Just start slow. I've completely eliminated pork and beef and don't miss them at all. There's turkey substitute for ground meat and pork. If you watch 'Food Inc' and see how diseased the meat is and how completely unimaginably inhumane those animals are treated, you'll have all the motivation you need.

I gave up meat on the regular about 2 years ago, I still eat it once a week for variety in my diet but I'm not eating it daily. Meat is expensive as hell now, I cut my grocery bill in half by just learning to cook more varied vegetables. I also lost about 50 lbs from cutting it out. I even grow my own food in my backyard and my neighbors look at me crazy but at the end of the season, I'm bringing in months worth of food while they working their nuts off to pay for that $15 steak. I don't preach though, if you love those burgers then get it. It's your life.

Vegan here. MANY THANKS to Russell Simmons for taking that lifestyle. I chose the same over 8 years ago. I did it because I'm an extreme animal lover. I saw some videos that were gross, like the cruelty in the beef industry. It made me sick enough to look up a few recipes on the Internet and follow the vegan lifestyle, as well. I knew that Russell was vegan at that time. He is an inspiration to all people, especially to vegans. And get this: I lost a lot of weight in a very short time without exercising! In fact, loosing the weight made me energetic. I used to be a couch potato but for the past 8 years, I've been an EverReady batterie. As a teen, I had a broken leg and suffered from and was treated for arthritis for many years, but I can now hop around the track on my bad leg and have NO sign of the disease. Anyhow, I could go on and on, but I just have to say that this interview was VERY MEANINGFUL and it would be so cool if you could find some recipes and vegan restaurants and take control of your health while ridding the world of cruelty, by GOING VEGAN. Thanks, again, Russell! Much love!!!

didnt mean to sound preachy, plants are 'alive' but they don't have a central nervous system to feel pain. for me it's about causing the least suffering and not consuming that negative energy. i never wanna sound preachy, but i was a huge meat and dairy consumer and would have loved to have changed sooner, but can't lie people saying that to me years ago i thought the same thing - stop preaching. we're all on our own journey. peace.

Soy is not good for you either. It produces estrogen so us men don't need it and also it contains high levels of goitrogens. Goitrogens are compounds that inhibit the thyroid’s ability to utilize iodine correctly which could lead to hypothyroid problems.

Phytoestrogens. Plant hormones won't affect a human like mammalian hormones, which flood most animal products, artificially and so forth.

+Dena Newton It's really not if you buy fruits and vegs from the frozen aisle. Plus, be honest with yourself--what you save buying poisoned food, you'll spend on healthcare and prescription drugs. Watch 'Food Inc' and 'Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead'. They're both on Netflix. I'm not vegan, but they stopped me from eating pork and beef IMMEDIATELY, and only REAL organic, free range chicken.

Dena Newton Going vegan is not expensive at all. Start with your staples like rice, potato's, sweet potato's beans, veggies, fruits. Also check out Earthlings to see how the animals are tortured just to become meat on your plate. Good luck watching it, I couldn't get through it, it is terrible. Type in what do vegans eat here on You Tube to get some ideas and go from there. Good luck on your journey and have a beautiful day :)
