Russell Simmons - 'Be Still And Be Successful'

Russell Simmons - founder of Def Jam and Phat Farm, majority shareholder for Global Grind - is famous for his huge career as a hip hop, clothing, media, and all-around business magnate. He's also well-known for his philosophy and social activism. Simmons is undoubtedly very busy, but today he reveals the secret to happiness and personal success-- staying still? In his new book, "Success Through Stillness," Simmons explains the power of meditation and the transformative power something that seems so simple can have over your life.
Russell Simmons talks about all this and more in this special interview with Cenk Uygur!

Wow, people are hard on Russell Simmons. All he is saying is just sit the fuck down for like 20 minutes once a day. I completely agree with him. As a society now, especially the younger generation, we're just constantly "on". Cell phones, computers, iPads. Then we go, go, go, go, go. He's not saying become religious or spiritual. Just let your brain relax once in a while so it can settle down start processing information better.

Meditation is like staying calm with a petulant three-year-old child that shouts, "I want, I want, I want!". The mind is the child, and you stay calm no matter how much the mind screams. Eventually, like a three-year-old, the mind will settle.

some people see a finger pointing at the answer, and stay stuck on the rings on the finger and the fingernails and the skin color of the finger, even the arm and body attached to the finger.. but completely ignore what the finger is pointing to. those people are meant to stay lost and repeat themselves thru life.

Russell is awesome! Meditation is difficult for new people, but (I say) just sit down with a timer set for 2 minutes, no longer at first!! and just focus on breath going in slowly...., breathe going out slowly...... Nothing Hokey about it. It just chills you out. Here is Russell's technique.... 7:42 Thank for posting

This is a second interview I watch as he advertises this book and honestly I bought it. Did meditation in the past and it actually did something for me. Actually my familily has not been too healthy recently and this reminds me to get back to vegan eating and meditate and do some Yoga as well. Will certainly encourage my wife to get back into it and one day also my children. Money is better spend on his book then McDonalds and can certainly have a profound impact on health, weath and well being. I really want to rurn the corner before my next big birthday. Cheers Simon 👍

Great interview! I think the best lesson to get out of this is this: Be happy with what you have. You can have a billion dollars to spend on a bunch of worthless shit but its not going to make you happy. Living for the moment, enjoying the journey called life with those who matter is what counts. And it doesn't have to be about meditation either. I find that I'm most content when I'm working on one of my hobbies. Rather then worry about x, y or z, I'm engaged 100% on my hobby and feel a sense of satisfaction when I accomplish something, even if its something as insignificant as finishing a sketch or fixing something in my car.

As muslims we need to pray 5 times a day, it's like meditation, but during that prayer we mention god and how appreciate we are for our lives. The only thing Allah or God (samething) requires in our religion is to meditate and stay away from any harm. I come to realise that islam is for US and for our benefit, not for God. God doesn't need us, we need him. #word #islam

Which leads me to think, if he were interviewing Russell and he knew nothing out him or his life would this interview be more natural and flowing, would he treat him the same? How would i react if i met Russel would be myself would i be real? i honestly don't know.

  • @kellyciarmataro5480

I agree 10000%. The interviewer isn't having a dialogue with Russell. He's so eager to get out his next prepared question, that he isn't listening to what Russell is saying and sometimes not waiting for him to even finish what he's saying. I think the interviewer is trying to be too cool and it's like he keeps steering the conversation Russell in that direction. I feel like Russell is trying to stick to this Too Cool for School Interviewer, while at the same time trying to get out an important message. If you ever have the opportunity to interview Russell have a real conversation. Base your questions on what he says. I doubt there will be any lack of conversation. Have some prepared opening dialogue and a question or 2 to get started but then base your questions off of what Russell says. Don't worry about hitting your prepared question quota, lol

All he's saying is meditate, there's so much scientific research supporting his view. Not to mention all the success he has had kind of backs it up on a small scale level too. If you think listening to this renowned guy promoting meditation (supported by science) is hokey just because he mentions in passing religious prophets i don't know what do with you. *It's like some people just pretend to be smart by being anti religious but are still taken hold of by their emotions rather than logic SMFH.* Here's the first page i found on meditation, the information is so easy to find... I really did not get the thing with the orgasm and being Russell Simmons and getting laid. What did that have to do with meditation, staying calm and being in the moment? Russell Simmons is sharing his wisdom here and getting that question? What?

+JustOneLonelyKZreadr My rule is if you need to wear a condom then you don't need to be having sex with the person you're so eager to put it all on the line for some temporary pleasure with. Nature has its way injecting cautionary mechanisms into human activities, but human beings are too stupid to adhere to them.
