this movie tanked when it was released with critics giving it a hammering. decades later its become a cult classic considered to be far ahead of its time in both style and framing technique. film makers are only really just catching up now with cgi....

It cost a ton of money to make for a western at the time. Well over twice as much as the much better and successful Unforgiven. Entertaining at times, but not a great flick. Interesting thought how it had established stars like Hackman and Sharon stone and up and comers DiCaprio and Crowe who became mega stars.
I like that Cort is shocked to see that he shot the gun, he was ready to die but that drink glass triggered his survival instincts. At that point his body was operating separately from his mind

I wouldn't feel too bad. The supply of hops was unsteady back then, and water quality issues and barrel contamination were common. In this backwater run by bandits on a dwindling supply with no refrigeration, you could expect a piss-warm, sickly-sweet beer tasting vaguely of minerals and dirt from the well water, with an increasingly spoiling, rotting taste.
Gene was a frightening presence in this movie, he really conveyed what a dangerous man Crowe's character was when it was the only time he took a gunfight seriously when they faced off

One of the best examples of "The lord works in mysterious ways". She rescues a man who was going to be executed the same way her father was slated to die, only to find out later that that man used to ride with the man she's here to get revenge against, a revenge plan that later would have failed if not for the man she rescued.

Up till this two things happen he’s pretty consistent he knows he could die he wants it in some small way or why eles bring in a gun fighter who’s as good as him but was more brutal he’s sons death took away any chance of a legacy other then as the outlaw the town took away his self imposed image of a good man after that the matches became to the death and the fighters stop joking back that’s what screwed it up

A fabulous directing/editing job from Raimi. That absolute mind focus when it counts the most. Even if you don't want any of it, it's still there.
the subtle build of the music is fantastic in this scene
Excellent western, despite not being popular with the critics. Well worth watching.
I can't believe this film was panned. I literally can't believe it. The gorgeousness of both Crowe and Stone is practically unbelievable. Hackman is good as always and a grotesque villain. DiCaprio plays a great cocky kid. The machinations are all great. It's one of the best westerns ever. Critics are stupid. Raimi is a superb director, OBVIOUS in the shooting and detail work just in this scene alone. Total master.
I like to think that Cort is just Ben Wade from 310 to Yuma. I know its not the case but I think it works.

Great question. A few years before this movie, Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) in Die Hard would have been another memorable villain. I’m hard-pressed to think of another one within the past 20 years though, outside of Hans Landa. Waltz’s portrayal was absolute master class.

Ralph Fiennes in any movie he played as an antagonist, Javier Bardem in No county for Old man (or Skyfall), Mads Mikkelsen in Casino Royale or quite recently Stellan Skarsgard in Dune. I could go on. @@Florida8K360 Depends on a person - for me if we make a extend the time period for several more years Ralph Fiennes as Amon Göth in Schindler's List would be first with Bardem for his Anton Chigurh in no country... coming close second. If I had to choose 'evil genius' type I would still go for Mads Mikkelsen' s Hannibal (although I did not like the series itself). And the list changes as time flies - I remember not liking Marlon Brando's colonel Kurtz portrayal - after 20 more years I find his performance more compelling.
