    It looks like the case in this scene. I think the "Nerdwriter" channel once described an important characteristic of Bugs Bunny's situations: He never wants to start the fight. He's just minding his business, and someone else comes along and makes trouble. That's what makes him appealing, despite Elmer Fudd or Daffy Duck getting their faces blown off by TNT.

    Buster Scruggs is a villain. Everyone else in the movie treats him as one, and he does terrible & violent things for no good reason and revels in it. But he doesn't see himself as a villain, he sees himself as a likeable character with a wonderful vocabulary and a good singing voice. It's everyone else he meets who are the evil ones. So the vignette tells the story from that point of view.

    Something that always both intrigued me and made me smile. Buster never made it any secret that he, by his own admission, doesn’t always follow the straight n’ narrow. But upon stepping into the saloon, being required by another to hand over his firearms, he didn’t bat an eyelash and complied without a fuss, which to me showed just how confident in his abilities he was to step into a new place not knowing its true colors. Such a legendary level of badass.

    This is why I believe he didn't take the poker hand. Some people are saying it's because of superstition and he was afraid to, but I think it plays into the theme of him being a Misanthrope. The hand itself was good, and he likely could've won with it. I think the fact that he did it to instigate a fight becomes obvious when you look back at the cantina scene, where he comes in claiming to want a drink, kills six people, and then leaves without ever getting a drink. He never really wanted one in the first place.

    Smiling doesn't necessarily indicate emotion. Sometimes when your adrenaline dumps you might just appear to be smiling, also the natural fight or flight reaction makes your jaw tighten up and your testicles shrink up closer to the body, it's a natural defense mechanism because getting hit in either location when things are loose and just hanging can either knock you out cold or put you in the fetal position. There are other examples of what your body does, sometimes people cry when they are extremely angry. Tears may be dripping out of someones eyes as they bash anothers skull in. It's strange what the human body does in these kinds of moments.

    @@Omicron716 i liked more the idea that Buster is not a misanthrope in the sense that he truly doesn't actively do anything to start fights, but he is a really good duelist and likes to show off, so he enjoys the killing but he doesn't go out of his way to search it. Which is why he doesn't outright kill Joe's brother; he shoots off his trigger finger and then the other 4 just to be sure, but when the brother tries to shoot at him with his other hand, well, Buster has no other choice but to kill him And the fact that he doesn't grabs a drink for himself after killing all the people in the cantina is because he is no petty thief, he is Buster Scruggs; the San Saba Songbird, he is way above stealing some Whiskey, or entering an establishment with concealed guns if said establishment has a rule against it

    What makes you think it was single action ? Just because he cocks it with his thumb doesn’t make it a single action. If you listen close enough to the sound of the thumb hammer being pulled it makes two clicks. That means that the weapon he was cocking was a dual action because a single action only makes one click. And it is very possible to create what happened in the film, maybe not to the extend of that many shots though.

Imagine if you saw the movie for the first time, and his part was the finale, woulda been an overall better experience. On the other hand, I think it may have been a bit of an homage to how they used to play a cartoon before a movie, and his story being a bit like bugs bunny and such, really fits that bill.

    As so many comments stated, a whole movie based on the Buster Scruggs character would be incredible wonderful! Tim Blake Nelson is a genius with this role. The western hillbilly accent he does so well along with the clever comedic delivery is priceless. The supporting cast also is perfect. I hope The Coen Brothers will consider to do just that?! I don't think this character would work for an entire movie. He's way too badass and lucky (except for the final part of this short, of course) which is something that tends to get boring very quickly due to how predictable his interactions end being, almost like a one trick pony or like hearing the same joke over and over. It just doesn't work. This short is just perfect as it is and IMO, that's what makes the character to shine even more.

  • @oldschoolsinger

    @oldschoolsinger

    Hmmmm....."way too badass". Yeah I guess you're probably right, Oveja. Being way too badass never worked for Clint Eastwood in all of the Dirty Harry movies, Charles Bronson in all the Death Wish movies, Bruce Willis in all the Die Hard movies, and countless hundreds of other movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal, Chuck Norris, or Jean-Claude Van Damme. Yeah, being badass just doesn't work in full-length movies.

    @@oldschoolsinger What a way to miss the point about what I said. All the guys you named for sure are good examples of badass characters, but none of them is remotely as exaggerated as Buster Scruggs. That's the problem with him when you think about an entire movie based on a character that as the other person pointed out, is too cartoonish. In every damn interaction not only he succeeded (save the last one), but he did in such ridiculous spectacular ways that ask to indulge yourself in the most childish suspension of disbelief. That's why it worked here in the short, cause it was only a couple of that interactions and it had after that, all the other stories that are infinitely more grounded in reality, which balanced the off the charts badassery & goofiness of Buster Scruggs. More of that would only work in a movie targeted at teenagers, which is something the Coen brothers aren't known for. Regards.

    There's a lot of risk in revisiting this brilliant and one in a million theme, and making a full movie out of it. It would be a tall order keeping this level of quality for that long, and it could backfire, including slightly diminishing the awesomeness this original piece. I think we can all agree this short film will continue to grow in popularity. Maybe it's best to let it be.
