Summary:
Few rock bands that emerged in the 1970s have achieved career longevity until the present day. One of the notable exceptions is the hard rockin' Canadian trio Rush. The group's 1974 self-titled debut and the follow-up album Fly By Night, issued the following year, created a buzz among heavy rock aficionados, but little else. The third album, Caress Of Steel, found the band beginning to create a hard-edged form of progressive rock (quite unlike its British progressive-rock counterpart) that confused as many fans as it gained. The breakthrough would finally occur upon the release of Rush's fourth album, 2112 in March of 1976. An ambitious concept album that explored a dystopian future, with lyrics influenced by the philosophical writings of Ayn Rand, 2112 found Rush striking a new balance between heavy and progressive rock that established all three members as highly accomplished instrumentalists. Arguably the band's signature album, 2112 would be lambasted by critics, yet gained the band a rabid global following that remains strong to the present day.
Presented here is Rush recorded live at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ at the tail end of 1976, just nine months after the release of 2112. Performing choice selections from their first four albums, this concert provides a nice overview of the group's early years, just as they were beginning to break big. From the raging opener of "Bastille Day" to the encore pairing of "Fly By Night" and "In The Mood," this performance is a prime example of these three musicians vacillating between the heavy metal leanings of their first two albums and the more ambitious material from Caress Of Steel and 2112.
Also featured here are strong renditions of "Anthem," another Ayn Rand influenced composition from their second album and the autobiographical "Lakeside Park" from their third, conveying a slightly softer side to the group. However, the centerpiece of this performance is unquestionably the epic title track from 2112. Clocking in at a full 16 minutes, here the band is clearly shifting into more complex compositions and the more eclectic sci-fi lyrical leanings that would capture the imaginations of millions. It was performances like this that won Rush such a dedicated following, which continues to pack arenas every time Rush takes to the road.

I believe they opened for Blue Öyster Cult the first time I saw them. It was a tri-bill with Angel as the concert opener. I know Rush also opened for Kiss in the 70’s as well.
CARESS OF STEEL was a very misunderstood album upon it's release September 24th 1975..and yes it almost ended Rush's career at the time... But to the eyes and ears of any hardcore RUSH fan it is their most underrated album!!

CARESS OF STEEL is so KILLER! I view Fountain of Lamneth as their Magnum Opus, even considering 2112 or Hemispheres ( which are a VERY close second...:) ) Killer Lerxst 12 string guitar jamming...No one at the Bridge, or Panacea... FORGETABOUTIT...I get a little choked up thinking of how many "rushheads" Don't even mention that song...Pfft; They may as well listen to ACDC...

Their most underrated album and also one of their best! One of my all-time favorite albums! I was at this show in 1976, they also touched on 2112 as I recall... The full concert is on KZread. Shame it's in black & white.

You are so lucky to have been there! If I could just go back in time to see that particular concert live! I was 12 years old then, it would have been so cool.
Sadness for Neil Peart, great drummer and man, his texts were always an authentic added value... Honour to the Rush, they left the scene without clamour or sensationalisms and now they show themselves as exceptional persons...
Bastille Day, one of my favorite riffs ever!!
October 28, 1975 was my first time seeing Rush. They played at Randy’s Rodeo in San Antonio, Texas. It was their Caress of Steel Tour and they opened with this song. I was about six feet from Geddy. My favorite album heavy and raw. My favorite song The Necromancer. Neil, you will be missed.
Always loved this track and Caress of Steel album.
Mr. Neil Peart, Professor... Peace to your soul, sir!!
This is the first song that expanded me beyond my beginning bass learning, beyond Kiss & Stones. (a whole new world for me) Now, at ~40 years later, after a recent stroke during an unrelated abdominal surgery, I’m having to start all over as far as my left hand is concerned (as those fingers are numb), and this song is my next major goal/milestone. Life is a circle, I guess. Thanks for the recurring inspiration, guys! I really miss Neal and you all.
Those of us who seen them at the start can truly appreciate what they became…and what we lost…N/P :(
This is the Rush I remember with the most affection
IN all those years, Dirk and Lerxst never lost their playfulness on stage.
I was at this show. One of the first rock concerts I ever went to. This was the 2112 tour. It was incredible. Saw the A Farewell to Kings tour after this then Hemispheres. I saw them 5 times in all from 1976 to 1980. Awesome every time.
Classic Rush. Love this song! Neil just crushes Bastille Day. This was a precursor to how amazing the band would become.

@mikehoskins56 As dedicated Rush fans, we already knew they were amazing. What followed was Rush touring in different countries and gaining fans all over the world. Canada has tons of great bands but not every one gets to expand beyond our borders. Texas King is a London Ontario band I really hope to see get the recognition they deserve. Their upcoming tour with Big Wreck will take them into the States. Check them out.

Yes, I saw them a few times back then, you have to realize there were many more top shelf bands like this, the epic bands would just roll through town on a regular basis, they all had a whole lot of competition, the talent seemed to feed off each other, they all had to improve to survive, but Rush was def one of the elite top bands, NO DOUBT!
Simply awesome
great performance

As a Canadian. I can only say holy fuck. Could be one of the best pieces of rock music ever.
Mon 1er album acheté à Londres à Noël 1975... et toujours un de mes préférés !
I'm born on 7/14/70 Florida boy no one owned Florida in those days like Rush in South Florida my brother was 7 years older I grew up with Moving Pictures hearing Witch Hunt on the way to the bus stop with A Walkman on in the dark. Rush was there own infinity a well written fictional gaze into mythology well written and guided by three boys that loved just being Canadian and honest to a vibe
Listening on Bastille Day
😢😢. RIP NEIL

:)..Thanks for the upload...I was 16 on this tour...This music was sent by some kind of a godlike dude for we teens back in those days...Oh, and Sabbath too...:)...So much great music and musicians in the 70's in the primes of their careers...Thank the "godlike dude" for youtube! It all went through philly...
So much energy and raw potential back then! What an exciting time!
Love his bass playing
So much awesome music happened in 1976 well the 70s period and I was there a teenager in the 70s and no decade no music can compare. 70s music is what's glorified forever even if it's from Carpenters to John Denver. I found I loved hard rock/heavy metal early on and Rush were so amazing I played All The Worlds a Stage on 8 track to pieces. Saw them open for Blue Oyster Cult
that cover was spot on.
Love Rush!! Yes!!
My favorite song of all time since I heard it on "All The World's a Stage" in 1976. Thank you for capturing this amazing performance.
RUSH are legend. So sad they no longer tour...
I was blessed to see them twice ,NW Indiana.....Fly By Night tour in 75....and they also played this Bastille Day as opening song. They also blew away Areosmith that night....then i saw them in 78 durring 2112 tour.Neil had this black chrome kit both times.RIP Neil
Neil Peart forever!
Neil Peart SUPERB !
Love this song
Obrigado Rush ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
I saw the 77' Tour with Max Webster opening the show! Riverside Theater Milwuakee WI. Tickets Cost $7.50 went to see them 35 times since! totally agree vchip57
This seems like a sound board recording with minimal clean up (like a Betty Board for you Dead Heads) - These guys are (were) so dedicated to striving for perfection even live, though one can never reach perfection. Neil Peart's lyrics always made me think about and evaluate my values and world view. Though I have not agreed with his complete view on the spiritual and God, through his interviews and some of his lyrics, I have major respect for him in his song writing. Many of his songs were short stories, but that is only news to you if you have not heard them before. Rest In Peace, Neil.
The talent on show here is absolutely other-worldly.....
Great sound.
Each one confident in what the other one's going to do next...And there you have it folks, practice
simply amazing
Oh that drumming! 1:51
They used this footage from Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage. So Awesome!
Happy Bastille Day!
Saw this tour in Seattle. Lined up outside the Paramount we heard them repeatedly rehearse the intro as it was the show opener. Loved the first four records...then punk rock blew my skirt up!
That voice. Holy shit.
As humble as they were great. And very relevant for today. Power isn't all that money buys.
Its all there. Rush is Truth.
Geddy Lee looked like Daniel Radcliffe with long hair
This is the concert I wish I could go back in time to be a true part of, to witness it Live would have been so rewarding and cool.
Headlong Flight riff right there. Never gets old
... f*****'-a this is gnarly dude... I love the lyric.. Power isn't all that money buys... common people watch out for the rich and Powerful overlords they'll always be there keeping an eye out for them... Peace
