The Who - Young Man Blues [Live] - Isle of Wight Festival - August 29, 1970

Музыка

The Who live at the Isle of Wight Festival, UK - August 29, 1970 -
Description: The Who playing "Young Man Blues" at the Isle Of Wight must be one of the single greatest filmed rock performances of all time, and although it has been officially released several times, none of them sound like The Who live, thanks to badly mixed and mastered soundboard audio.
So again it's up to the fans to present an alternative, and I have spent quite some time working with the best "unofficial" sources I could find to create what I feel is the closest I could get to a proper representation of the band's massive wall of sound. I am very happy with the results, and Pete in particular benefits from the work that has been done with his guitar sound. It is pure proto punk/noise/shoegaze/drone/metal/sludge/doom-heaven!
I have also worked with the colours, trying to make them match the photos we've seen of the night, with a darker and more "blueish" appearance. My "unofficial" video source might not be the best available in terms of resolution, but it's a worthy alternative to the official version (currently available on blu-ray through Eagle Rock), and to my mind a "truer" view of the event. You be the judge.
There is way too little footage of The Who at their peak, so what is out there is worth obsessing about. This is a good starting point.
- Please note that this video and its soundtrack does NOT infringe copyright. This is a fan project made out of unofficial sources. -

Pound for pound I don't think any other band could match The Who for their raw, unadulterated power and pure energy. Their music was a mix of chaos, anger, and unlimited talent that no band has ever been able to equal, and probably never will. The Who is nothing short of legendary.

Four top notch musicians at the very top of their game, there was simply no one else who came within a country mile of them. As for this rendition of "Young Man Blues", it has to be the most aggressive five and a half minutes of hard rock music ever recorded.

So many music fans do not understand that unlike Paul Stanley, when Towshend windmills, he really windmills. He tears his fingernails off and there is blood everywhere. You can see it just by googing the images. 04:42-04:46 - in those 4 seconds, Pete demonstrates what rock n' music is about and its purpose. Just 4 seconds. Nothing more needs to be said. That is a man possessed on stage. As he said in The Kids Are Alright movie, when he's on stage, he has no control over his behavior. He's knocked people unconscious with his guitar before, kicked security people in face, etc. As he says, in order to perform, he has to go into a zone which is dangerous. It's the only to get The Who's across.

Tony Kaye: Deep Purple still have the world's record for loudest concert ... in 1972. Hasn't been exceeded yet. In the early 1970s, the Who were almost as loud. 150 feet from the stage and you were still at stage volume. Or what used to be called the nose-bleed section. Farmers used to complain about rock concert volume and that it was bothering their livestock ... miles away from the concert venue. Jimi Hendrix once said in 1969 in between songs, "We'll be tuning up between each and every song. Because we really care for your ears. I know you think that's ungrateful." I went to a Kiss concert in 1979 (I was 12 at the time; it was my oldest brother's birthday present to me) and my ears rang for about two or three days after. During the concert, my brother and I had to yell at each other so that we could hear each other. In the tourbook, Kiss said that they wanted to give their audience a souvenir ... yeah, like hearing loss. My oldest brother got a button at a Ted Nugent concert in the late 1970s or early 1980s and I remember the button said, "If it's too loud, you're too old." I guess I was too old back then and too old now (I'll be 53 in July).

I have both DVD and Blu Ray. A word of note: whoever edited The Who's concert at Isle of Wight put the songs out of order. They put the whole Tommy Suite in succession and had it end with See Me Feel Me when, in fact, the Tommy Suite was bookended by other songs. I think they wanted to get some dramatic effect like in the film of Woodstock. They explain it in the booklet that comes with the disc. Still, an amazing example of The Who at nearly the peak of their powers.

Something happened to Roger Daltrey's voice in 1970. It became muscular, confident, authoritative. Live at Leeds, Who's Next and Quadrophenia are all stellar performances. Daltrey became a rock God. The band was firing on all cylinders. 1970-1973, what a great time for British hard rock. Led Zeppelin, The Who, Deep Purple , Black Sabbath, etc.

This is not Rock and Roll. The Stones are by far the greatest band ever in that genre... this is something else. This is ROCK. This is savage. The Stones swing and chug and menace and jive and seduce and astonish... the Who plunder and destroy... they are like a beautiful avalanche of boulders thundering down a mountainside, annihilating anything in their path... it is magnificent, synchronized, terrifying chaos...

Entwistle was just an amazing bassist, insanely fluid. Moon was an insane genius of a drummer with such excellent timing and rapport with Entwistle. Daltry had awesome pipes and sang his heart out. While Townsend always seemed a reluctant soloist. Great Rythm guitarist with many skills and gimmicks, but his solos always seemed stilted and hesitant. JMHO Good live video.

Come on. We love The Who. Let's not randomly call out another form of music just to proclaim superiority. There are a lot of hip hop shows that do match this for "excitement", maybe just not for you. The complete line-up of Wu-Tang Clan was completely roaring from start to finish when I saw them. Ditto The Roots. Ditto Beastie Boys. Don't be that guy. No one asked about rappers; you just decided to be a dick.
