I hope that in Russia, in the government of the Russian state, too, eventually normal, sane people, real Russians will come (We are talking about the Russians/Slavic people and not about other peoples that live in the Russian Federation), because Russia, historically, culturally, in the form of the East Slavic ethnic origin of the Russians (and not in the person of the same supporters of Putin, the current rulers of the Russian state), in the form of Russian cultures, Russian culture, is also part of Europe. Russians, like Ukrainians, are the East Slavic people of Europe by ethnic origin. And of course, also, I wish Ukraine, the Ukrainian people all the best and peace... Every day I go to a local bakery here in south-east Poland, I walk past by a small old cemetery. There is a part of it dedicated to people who were murdered by the russian red army. It's a pretty sizeable part for "never attacking civilians".

And in most parts of the world, it's your allies The US, The UK, France, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands who murdered and oppressed millions but I guess as long as they didn't attack Poland, you're fine with them. This is one of the reason I'm not anti-Russia and do not care what they do because in wars, there's no good guys and bad guys, there's only sides. Russia ain't the bad guy, they are just not on your side due to some history your country shares with them. You have no issue align yourself with bad guys who did 100 times worse than Russia because those bad guys didn't hurt your country. In this conflict, I'm team Russia, not because I agree with their actions but because the "good guys" have hurt my country and Russia never did. Same thing most of you anti-Russia are doing.

@@Ranstone well I live in Sweden and here we have free speech and that "power to the people" you talk about. We also have rights, or "rights to the people" as you say. If you take one of those away, it's not a democratic country, believe it or not. Saying Russia is a democracy, is just denial from russians who don't want to acknowledge the fact that they live in a dictatorship. Either that, or they are just afraid of the consequences of being caught saying something negative about their government. Also a country can't be a dictatorship and a democracy at once. It's like saying a fruit is a banana and an apple.

@@Ranstone The contempory meaning of democracy in my view needs to include that periodically the voters get deciding who will rule and who will have the right to pass legislation. For that to happen in a meaningful way all adults have to be in a position to cast their ballots and there has to be free speech. Without free speech the voters will not hear a range of positions and will not be in a position to make informed choices. (BTW, if there have been totalitarian democracies - apartheid South Africa being a better example than ancient Greece - there have been far more totalitarian republics!!!!!!!!)

What else can they say, Russians I know are a very Patriotic people but are also good people, it is the leaders who are the Bastards in all of this, there are many people who are in Prison like Navalny who have given up their Freedom for the people, but I am afraid that many Western Powers did nothing, after What the Putin did in Salisbury England with Novichok, that should have been the wake up call, but everyone did nothing including our own lame Government in the UK, at that time and still now Many Russian Oligarchs owned vast swathes of London property and sent their Children to British Schools not only English but Welsh and Scottish to, Atlantic College in Glamorgan South Wales certainly had Politburo and Oligarch Children Educated there in the past. The Russians were formed from East Slavic tribes, and their cultural ancestry is based in Kievan Rus'. Genetically, the majority of Russians are identical to their East and West Slavic counterparts; unlike northern Russians, who belong to the Northern European Baltic gene pool.

Dear foreign friends! I have already communicated in the comments, and I consider it important to write separately, as a person living in Russia, what is happening here. I was engaged in the analysis of the situation, daily views of various sources, lecturers, polls and studies on the topic of the war, and therefore I consider my experience quite unbiased (although it is not easy even for me to write scientifically and without emotions from what is happening here in 1984). So, the majority of Russians living in Russia really say that Putin is doing well and doing everything right (about 90% of the population). But this cannot be interpreted one-sidedly. Firstly, most people do it out of inertia and unwillingness/impossibility to study politics, which is normal, because it is unusual for people to be interested in politics if it does not concern them. Most Russians believe that politics does not concern them, because incomes, as a rule, do not fall (sanctions really do not work for ordinary people, since most of the population does not travel abroad, does not use foreign services, does not study science and does not read foreign sources). Almost the entire country, however, believes that there really are no independent courts in Russia, that everything around is bought. Therefore, Russians rarely go to court, do not fight for any rights (even for their own), are afraid of conflicts over poor public transport, unreasonably high rents, and so on. But at the same time, they believe that officials and the city administration are to blame. But not Putin! This is truly terrible. Most Russians say that war is bad, but they say that we had no choice, and the US and Ukrainians hate us. In general, this is already pleasing, if only because people do not approve of murders as such. There is a huge generational gap in Putin's approval. The generation of 20-30 years old as a whole will say that Putin is well done, but they will not particularly answer further questions, since they admit that they do not understand the topic. But in the 40+ generation, something terrible begins. They perceive Putin as a religious figure, on the level of their parents, believing that he is never wrong. They are desperately trying to justify his actions with the most stupid arguments. This is due to the Stockholm syndrome experienced in the nineties. They believe that democracy does not work, and the United States and the West allegedly did not help us and wanted us to be poor. Almost all films in Russia showed the nineties as a time of poverty and devastation. They are afraid of freedom, because it was at the beginning of the 2000s that huge economic growth began under Putin due to the increase in oil sales (obviously, Putin did not contribute to this, but they believe that it was him). It can be seen that these people have a neurosis, and they really believe that everyone wants to kill them, because the president said so. The scariest thing is that most of the people 40+ really think that beating their people to death with batons is the right thing to do. What to plant and poison the opposition - that's right. That directing a nuclear bomb at the United States is right. And the older the generation, the crazier their speeches become, and the level of aggression reaches the desire to kill the whole world. But! Not everyone is like that, but only a large part of the population. And this majority really does not want any rights either for themselves or for others. Therefore, it is worth understanding that even the Russians themselves suffer from them, and not just the Ukrainians. And that, therefore, you should not generalize to all Russians, because, generalizing, you do exactly the same thing, considering all people to be bad because of the majority (moreover, the middle-aged majority, which probably won’t even go to your countries). Secondly, there are many people who understand that Putin is insane. But it is these people who have critical thinking, they read the opposition media. And, as a rule, it is they who can find a good job, know foreign languages and emigrate. Therefore, it is impossible to calculate the exact number of Russians who are against the war. There is not even open data and an unambiguous opportunity to interpret the number of people who left. Russians are generally not inclined to be interested in politics. Political videos on KZread get very little views, and it's obvious that people really think they can't change anything. Russians don't like to read the opposition media, because they show all the bad things that are happening here. Their mood deteriorates, and they prefer to sit in the echo chamber, which says that everything is not so bad in Russia, that the West has its own propaganda, and we have our own. That not everything is so simple, and Ukraine also dressed up. All oppositionists are convinced that democracy will be brought on a silver platter. That the regime will weaken, the elites will want democracy, and this is where we will act (and they themselves do not know how they will act). Russians cannot unite in almost anything because of the totalitarian past and the authoritarian present. The opposition itself quarrels among themselves, and it is not clear how it can even come to power. So overall it's really bad. But if you consider all Russians as fascists, it will be even worse. Autocracy and the Soviet Union turns people into beasts, not vice versa. Therefore, fight for democracy in your countries, fight against right-wing populists who want to make the country great. What makes a country great is cooperation with others and respect for all people. Perhaps my generation (I'm 24) will also come to this if Putin's regime is replaced by something softer. But there is little hope for this, and hope is the only thing we have left among the zombie older generation who want to send us to the Middle Ages.

It feels to me like a lot of the war supporters in Russia outwardly think "Russia is great, so we should subjugate all these people so that they can live under the same great regime", but inwardly truly feel "everything is terrible, why should they get a shot at a good life when we can't? If other countries would not be so dangerously free and provocatively developed then Russia would not look like undeveloped shythole country that it is! Germany managed that kind of self-examination, but only after total military defeat. Japan has done it half-heartedly. Not much to build on, i'm afraid. It's going to be one heck of a task.

The more I watch the more I realize that it is useless. The people won´t tell you what they think. How do I know? I am Czech. And I know how it was before 1989. If a reporter asked you something on the streets you would just autamatically go with the government line. And you would say something completely different behind closed doors. Like the last guy. And I understand why Daniil doesn´t want to compromise him. We have absoulutely no clue how many questioned people say what they trully think. The level of oppression in Russia is reaching those in former Soviet Union once again.That beying said I still am amaized by the cruelty of Russians. They have it in them. Already in 1844 a Czech writer K.H. Borovsky wrote this: "I went to Russia as a Slav and came back as a Czech. It's a country of misery, squalor, booze and extensive literary works about misery, squalor and booze. I can testify that the Russians think of other Slavs not in a brotherly way, but in a dishonest and selfish way. I prefer the Hungarians, who fight us openly, to the Russians, who approach us with a Judas kiss and then put us in their pocket. These gentlemen begin to say and write Slavic instead of Russian, so that they may say Russian instead of Slavic.

Back in 1987 I was traveling a bit off piste in CZ. I needed to extend my visa. An ordinary procedure, involving exchanging a some Western currency per day for a stamp. This was in a small garrison town, and I had to find a police station with «foreign police» service. Not easy. The hotel manager told me to drive to a part of town out in the suburbs. There I saw uniforms all over the place and various, unidentified, but very official gates. Stopped a guy in airforce uniform, a lieutenant. He spoke some English. Told him what I needed to do, he was not sure and started pointing at different uniforms. - That is the traffic police, hm. No. That is the military police, hm. No. That is the criminal police. Hm. No. I pointed at a guy in a different uniform, a formal outfit with tie: - What about him? I asked. The lieutenant looked at me, with a wry smile, and mustered his best English: - No, he’s one of those fucking Russians! (direct quote) We both laughed, and he finally found the correct police station sign. They could help me.

In addition, considering what the aid does towards securing the future, prosperity, and a stable, peaceful and freer world, and considering how many trillions all of that is worth, the aid going to Ukraine is like lunch money. In 2022 it was 5% of the military budget.

Why on earth would anyone want the 'Russian way' of living. I have Russian and Kazakh family and outside of the main cities especially I just see a country stuck in the 19th century, but whether in or out of the city everything is dependent on corruption and who you know. Dreadful.

I like your biting irony! 😊 But interestingly recently I had a conversation with a member of the German Bundeswehr who was about to be retired a few weeks later and who had to take part in some missions like Afghanistan. He to told that under no means they were allowed to shoot even if they were spitted at and we're aggressively threatened. Only at real shootings they were allowed to fight back; he said that it was not easy for him and his comrades.

Daniil, You're work is so important to give other countries a Russian perspective across the spectrum of age and geography. I live in the US and find soooo many similarities. I feel as terribly for common Russians as I do for Ukrainians and if I might add the US. We are a dying, crumbling and decaying nation that still believes that military will solve all of our problems; when in actuality has caused most and even exacerbated some. Salut.

@1420channel Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪 Firstly thank you for your courage in making and posting these videos which provide us all with an honest account of the average Russian person's thoughts on current affairs. I often think the fastest route to world peace would be to force average citizens into dialogue with their counterparts in supposed "Rival" nations. I think the veil of antagonism would quickly fall when each realises the other just wishes to live their lives in peace with dignity and governments would find it harder to justify acts of aggression through fearmongering. The technology is there to support such a movement but I know such transparency would not be welcomed by many regimes worldwide. One thing that interests me most from the responses I've seen in your videos is how Russian people view western values to be "Unacceptable". It seems to me that most of this concerns western tolerance to alternative lifestyles (Which if they have been paying attention they would know are still quite divisive in the west - See wokism and culture wars). But the key western values that I would like to hear them rebuke are the right to assembly and the right to free speech. Could you ask them for their thoughts on these western values? Regardless of your views on any topic, how can you take pride in a nation that is afraid of dissenting voices? That won't tolerate disagreement and threatens it's own people with detainment or worse should they speak against their government? True nationalism is not loving one's nation blindly. It is critiquing your nation continuously. Only then can you build a better "motherland" for all of her citizens.

I agree the Russian campaign appears to be driven by Putin and his supporters apparent wish to retake Historical lands of the Russian empire - and he alluded to this himself in his 2021 essay on Ukraine. But from these videos, popular support in Russia seems to be sustained on siege mentality nationalism borne out of a patriotic duty to protect the "motherland". Authoritarian regimes always rely on blind nationalism like this convincing their population that they are acting in national interests and any objections are unpatriotic. Whereas in truth, the most patriotic thing any citizen can do is question whether their government is truly acting in the best interest of it's people. This is why the people of Ukraine and even western volunteers are easily motivated to join this conflict. They see this as a war between freedom and oppression, and in defending freedom they protect their countries and their peoples from tyranny. Russia on the other hand requires conscription, mercenaries or threats of imprisonment to field an army. Nationalism is a dangerous thing and often used as a cheap trick by governments to foment hate of "others". All countries need to recognise this.

The casual bloodthirstiness of the older generation is really sad and alarming. Of course not all people are like that, but I am not used to hearing that at ALL, ever, from anyone, so it's really disturbing to hear a sweet little grandma come out with that sort of thing. The closest thing I can think of is once when I was in Germany, supervising a bunch of teenagers on a trip. We were visiting a religious building and a teen girl wanted to ask for prayers for someone she knew. One of the workers in the building, an older lady, immediately started scolding her harshly for being in a part of the building she didn't think teenagers should be in. One of the other leaders of our group (a German in his 20s or maybe 30) made sure the teenager was all right after that exchange, and then came to me (a foreigner) to talk about it. "This grandma was raised in a generation without love," he told me by way of explanation. I think of that when I see these elderly people talk so casually about murdering people in other countries. Perhaps they were raised in a generation without love. And so their relationship with authority is unhealthy, they are unable to understand why all of this is wrong, and they don't understand how things could change. They are thinking on survival level only. And to those who do not want to harm others and who are against war, all too often, they are blinded by the media telling them that they are the ones being attacked, not the other way around. (I always want to ask these people, what part of Russia did Ukraine invade? In which oblast of Russia is there a battle going on with NATO? The answer is none, of course...) The good thing about Germany is that the younger generation DID change. I wish Russia luck (and I wish for them a lot of smart 24 year olds with brains and perseverance to change things).

I have been thinking about this for many years, but you probably explained it better than me! if you read what repressions and sufferings were in the USSR, you will understand these people, for the most part they were serfs all their lives and the first freedom was in 1992, it did not last long and in 2008 it became clear to many that the Chekists would not give up power. People are atomized and unhappy, the USSR is the most terrible experiment on the territory of the whole of Europe! from 1918 to 1953, more than 40 million people died, in repressions and resettlements alone, Stalin killed more than 14 million people, but in fact, there is no exact data, perhaps these figures should be multiplied by 2 !! The Holodomor in Russia and in Kazakhstan and Ukraine is a separate calculation. most are slaves and their living conditions are terrible, aesthetically and physically. nihilism and lack of thinking due to lowness and atmosphere. Moscow has been destroying Russia for several centuries now.... For Russia, the decuentralization and autonomy of the regions is obligatory....otherwise it will be an endless circle of darkness and violence. The country needs to be divided, but the West of Europe does not want this, it could be done, but the EU countries strengthened and contributed to the worst 'gopnik' from Europe ..

What’s wild is how they casually justify invading Ukraine by claiming that other countries don’t love them, are arrogant and not obedient to them. These comments show Russian society’s underlying grandiosity and desire for imperialism and that’s what’s driving everyday Russian support for this war. And while the numbers are exaggerated, Putin’s repeated election success is probably real. It’s like it’s not a flaw, it’s a feature, and a symptom of a much greater problem. 😢

Exactly. Without deeply rotten soul of people this war would never be possible. It is not just Putin's war, as many people want to suggest, as if ordinary Russians are just innocent bystanders.

The same could be said about the US

When I lived in rural North Carolina, the attitudes of the local citizens and the stoic living conditions sounded and looked just about the same as was depicted here...just less snow 🌄. The United States may in fact be more "free" than Russia, but that doesn't mean that many of our citizens put in the effort to be the best they can be. Our real Worldwide common enemies are ignorance and indifference.

I can assure you that N Carolina bears no resemblance to the mid 29th century. People from N Carolina wouldn’t join the Army to get the opportunity to invade Mexico and the chance to steal a toilet bowl from say, Acapulco.

But at least the North Carolinians didn't have to worry about the KGB / FSB taking them off to the gulag; nor were they lied to on an industrial basis the way these people in Russia think that if any apartment building has been bombed, it was the Ukrainians who did it - when their own government has methodically destroyed thousands of apartment blocks in Ukraine...but only after they first obliterate the children's shelters and maternity hospitals.

The 1420 team is excellent 👌, I honestly would love to see one day Russian people prosperity increase without a dictatorship and real freedom..the young generation needs it and hopefully eventually gets it and all of us can live in peace, great job team

one thing you forgot to mention your country was so pissed off that the berlin wall came down and other parts of russian wanted out and putin and others before him want to go back to this so called mother russia only way your country can do this is force ,,,,your putin wants the ussr back hes dreaming ...but u will never get out of the crap ur in as long as there is former kgbs in ur goverment.

There is freedom in Russia and Putin is a great president and I like many young people would vote for him next year for the first time in my life since I’m 22 years old now and last elections were when I was 16. Glory to Putin 🇷🇺🇷🇺Z
