Running Myth: "180 steps per minute"
When people tell you that you need to run at 180 steps per minute at all paces, show them this.

Why would u put bolt on the list he’s a sprinter
All the long distanve runners were close to 180 though. 186 is basically the same as 180 in this context.
This is really silly. The evidence for appropriate and optimal cadence isn’t that everyone needs to sit at 180 and nobody here thinks that. But showing Isa on bolt at 270 and Walmsley at 160 or 170 isn’t proof of concept. They’re doing completely different things. There is good evidence to support that a cadence that is consistently too low for your height, mechanics, and speed causes greater soft tissue strain that can be mitigated by increasing the cadence. As always, individual variation will supersede generalisations…but on a population level this is true.

It's not a myth. The vast majority of us should be focusing on a high turnover as distance runners. And Bolt is comparing apples to oranges.

Yes but you have to run above 180 when running in a competiton for Shure and around 170/175+ on slow runs. The quicker the less prone to injury because you have less vertical oscillation

There is evidence that running at min 180 reduces risk of injury. But it depends on speed and distance.
it depends what speed
Generally, a higher cadence means a lighter footfall and it tends to reduce overstriding, but yeah, every body and distance has its optimal cadence. It's fun to play with and see what it means for you. I naturally sit at 160, but I do drills to hit 175 to 180.

Forcing myself to run too high of a cadence gave me tendonitis. Going back to my comfortable cadence fixed everything.
Everybody here that is saying that comparing two different types of runners is an idiot. The point of the video is to show that the ideal steps per minute is different for everybody and dependent on what type of running you are doing
He proved the point even more, because all of these average close to 180 with small variations for body type, and obviously the sprinter is going to be running at a higher cadence. Do you need to run at exactly 180? Probably not, but on a bell curve the vast majority of bodies are going to average towards 180 if they want to maintain good mechanics.
You basically proved the point that you were trying to dismiss
From this video, I noticed the elite runners keep their chest straight even those who swing their arms across the chest.
Correct 180. See original paper by Italian scientist
180is tought because it is 3 seps a second witch is a easy cadence to remember for beginners

You have to calculate it with your distance and your leg length
Everyones movement is so damn smooth tho. Holy crap!

i encourage a person try to have 180 spm when he starts his long run in his life. in general people does only 150-160 at first which is kinda waste of energy. when he ran for a period of time, he will switch to the best position for his own.
the cameraman
Jim Walmsley should try that 270spm like Bolt lol
Almost no up and down with Usain Bolts stride amazing sprinter.
Faster cadence means shorted contact time, means less kinetic energy lost on ground contact.
For those saying it's a whild comparison, that's the point. He's saying that there isn't a set cadence because it varies so much from distance to distance.
That general idea is for distance running and you can using the same cadence with biking as well. Notice how all the distances runners are close to it.
Sprinting and distance running are to completely different things
Me and bro after we hear the second bell (we’re done for)
Run your run.
David Gogins 💀
Kipchoge : it's easy
Firstly it depends on your height. If you are tall - your steps are longer and there are fewer of them. Secondly it depends on your speed- the faster you run, the more frequent your steps. And the third thing is your ground contact time. The time of contact with the ground should be minimal
it also really depends on ur stride length, if you have shorter legs obviously you'd be taking more steps to gain the amount of distance that someone's leg would be taller
A little different when you deal with people who are 5’7 and below. Great video!
sprinting and long endurance runs are completely different beasties...

It's more an issue of form and heel striking, the higher your cadence the shorter your stride and the more likely you are to have good form. Very few people can run at 160spm and avoid bad form
Usain's hands are in exact sync with his legs
My cadence ranges from 170 - 195 depending on speed. As speed increases so does cadence and stride length .
Jim has really good form
Bolt can't run with that speed for whole minute
It’s almost like they’re running completely different distances
Me running away from my mother who has belt: 200 steps/min
Best cadence depends on what speed you are running and how you body is shaped to find the optimal one, you have to find what cadence is the least jarring to run at.
You can see which leg they put the most power into
