Rumble in the Roots - Sunrise Ferreting 9

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Athena the jill ferret persistently tracks a rabbit through its burrow until it bolts.
Purse nets are used to cover each hole. The ferret is then entered to flush/herd the rabbit out. Once caught in the net the ferreter ends the hunt quickly and humanly.
It is believed ferrets were originally domesticated for this purpose. Like the cat It's believed ferrets were initially encouraged to live on farms to help control rats and rabbits to protect crops. It still maintains its title as the most natural method of controlling rabbit populations while providing food for the table.

    think it wise for non-ferret owners to know that ferrets are obligate carnivores. THIS is their food. it's natural. I would get mine to hunt for their food but their bred as pets and are too soft so I buy mine frozen from the pet store. it's not nice but it's life.

    @@saraallison9469 I actually prefer somewhat bigger and rarer animals to hunt with..Because perhaps throughout the entire history there would hardly be 2 dozen human beings that also dared doing this,yet my grandad was one of them!He used to raise and teach the team hunting perhaps the biggest hunting comrade ever:a huge male Siberian tiger Neron!And by the way huge even for his kind,nothing to say about us:his weight exceeded the weight of his human family more than twice(grandad,his wife and daughter all together combined never reached half of the weight of this Goliath in his prime!)-as he inherited unusual size from his mother which perhaps even reached the record of weight for females yet there is no such statistics..Still I doubt that there were such:283 kilograms for females is about half a tonne for males!And her son Neron reached 385kg at his prime while record of weight for his kind belongs to Jaipur which was 465kg(look him up:photos are insane!)! Anyway through his 19 years long life and 17 out of these years they regularly went to hunting trips together,and there were no such animals that he couldn't put down:nothing could threaten him and very little lucky ones were eventually escaping..just to get caught the next time!Even despite his huge weight and size he especially in younger years used to climb trees with unmatched agility and in this way he destroyed all the bobcat population in those forests where they were hunting(although at his 5 when he was 305 kilograms already-he fell from the tree and broken his paw)-I remember mom told me where he caught an owl on their property one day-I used to climb that same tree to that same branch and fuck!I was young and weighted less than 50 kilograms back than,about 40-and swear to God:that part dangerously wobbled with my weight!And I can't imagine how 300+ kilograms could hang there without cracking it like a match,although I saw clawmarks! Actually many of those things that he showed were astonishing and unbelievable:he was very smart and even established some form of contact with his human family!And for example he used to sleep on the same bed with mom,which never heard of him laying near her,yet she was never able to get out of her bed without waking up her dad and mom,and they also never heard how Neron did that same thing!Not to mention that he had to get over mom first and then as he didn't fit the bed if stretched at all,but he was sleeping in a funny way:he was bending himself to the point where he got both his hind paws together with the end of his tail and always covering his nose with hind paws and tail end he got into something like a huge furball and fitted the bed perfectly,and all that completely silent! Anyway hope I will get further than they did because I already know a lot of things that they had to figure out on their own! By the way he occasionally was asked to get rid of hares on the crop field,and that was quite an epic show 🤗👍🐯😍

    40 years ago I did a lot of ferreting in Hertfordshire. This brings back happy memories. Back then we didnt have any technology. Just nets and a ferret. If the ferret didnt come out. You waited.....and waited...! If it got dark, you plugged up all the holes with big stones and came back next morning. Eventually we always got the ferret back. Lovely videos- well done.

    Tracking collar. It allows me to locate the ferret from above so I can keep tabs on the ferret and can dig down to retrieve a rabbit if the ferrets killed it. My 1st video shows it in action.

    January 15, 2017 Thanks for the courteous reply...... Fascinating !! I noticed that upon opening the box kept in, the Ferret did not immediately try to get away. Are they ( trained ) tame, are they like a dog, in the sense that they will stay with you ? The one seemed to accept the collar so readily. Locating is one thing ...Will they come to you ?

  • @ZeusPolecat

    @ZeusPolecat

    The ferrets don't run away, they rarely even sprint when outside. So it's simply just a case of picking them up as they plod around. Once the holes empty they are happy to leave it. I have trained them to come to a call, this will work at home but when they have places to explore and rabbits to chase they don't really listen. They don't aim to please their owner like a dog would. They are domesticated like cats and dogs, so they don't really need 'tamed'. They just need to be taught some manners, like not to bite humans.
