I found Joseph Zeliska 1880-1899 (age 19) on Find a Grave. You walked near him. There were 6 or 7 White crosses behind his grave.

I'm thrilled that you visited some of my old stomping grounds from the 70's. A small group of friends and I went in the bat cave. It's actually a tunnel or addit for the Hibernia mine. It runs along the top of the lower levels. The deepest part is (I believe) around 1400 ft. We went in about half way to the other end and encountered the bats. We later discovered that this colony is the largest in either the Northeast or the U.S. I can't remember which. We turned around and left because the bats were very upset with our presence and we could hear running water as if someone turned a faucet wide open and left it running. We felt it would be even more dangerous than it already was just to go in in the first place. There also was an open cravass above the cave that we encountered. I believe it was an earthquake fault. I never found out for sure, but it was very deep.

The Cemetery was abandoned by the Catholic church after the nearby church burnt down. Once a year an Irish club does maintenance at the cemetery. I have a friend whose Grandparents are buried there and my father's brother, 6 yrs. old and infant sister are also buried there. The boy's headstone still stands but the girl's grave has never been found as many other grave-sites that have lost their markers. My Grandfather worked in the Hibernia mine.

That was fabulous thanks Cliff. What a lot of stuff to find. Really love the bat cave, sorry but I’m glad it’s done so no-one can go in, just for bats. The cemetery left me feeling subdued. The loss of so many young men, very sobering def. Not the life they were looking for. Thanks so much for taking me along. Please stay safe and take care

I was thinking it got the name because it looks like the cave entrance they used for early Batman TV.

You were just a stones throw away from the old Hercules Powder Company property as well as the other iron mines in the area. I suggest heading up to the Sterling Mine and Franklin Mine in Sussex County for some more mining history.

Many immigrants from Germany and Prussia flooded into New Jersey, often taking jobs as common laborers. Their numbers dwarfed those of other nationalities. My GG grandparents came from the Bomhof Plantation in Germany, settling in NYC. That spelling of Jozef on the stone is German, which was quite a common name.

Always enjoy your videos! The wooden structure at 12:20 is the wooden headframe and tipple for the Main Hoisting Inclined shaft, now sealed and backfilled. Loaded mine cars would be hoisted from the incline on rail and dumped into the wooden tipple shown at 12:53, before being emptied into trucks for shipment. There are some old photos of these features on Iron Miners, Beach Glen Mine. The "bat cave" is a mine adit driven 1.5 miles to connect with multiple mines to drain their ore. Collectively these mines would be known as the Hibernia Mine.

That spot that just needs a roof can be a future MTV Cribs episode. Just picture this: Oh, hey, and over here is the floor...with boulders, the roof will be forthcoming... you have to go over there and dig down a half a foot to go to the bathroom. Glorious display of granite mini-boulders. It was an awesome day of exploring even though that 2nd spot was, eh! Thanks for tagging along! You're awesome! Until next time, take it easy!

The inscriptions on the headstones appear to be in Polish. From 1975 until 1918 most of Poland was part of Russia; also names ending in ski or sky are typically Polish. The miners were probably from the part of Poland belonging to Russia and, although technically Russian, were of Polish Heritage. True Russians would have had headstones in Cyrillic.

So many young immigrants came here to find work so they could send money back to their families, only to die on the job or of the diseases that were so prevalent in the crowded housing conditions of that time. They died alone & sometimes without their families being notified. It's heartbreaking to think of the loved ones back home not knowing what had happened. Thank you for taking us along on this exploration! Sobering site, but also beautiful nature. Loved the waterfall!

Cliff, One if not the most productive iron mine in New Jersey until , I believe the early 20th century. There was a tunnel that went through the mine, used for transporting ore. That one you were looking at might have been it. That's all I can remember, it's been a long time. My wife is from Boonton, went to Boonton High School . Cheers, Rik Spector

Grew up near this reservoir (Hibernia/Telemark) & played in all of these beautiful woods. But we weren't allowed on the shoreline property back then, late 70's, early 80's. Plus it was mostly fenced off. Not that that would've stopped us. It was the scary tales of boogymen hiding among the rocks that kept us out. 🤪👹 (Many of the mine entrances may have been bulldozed. They tried boarding them up but kids kept climbing into them anyway. And some of those big deep pits were filled with murky green water that glowed like auto antifreeze.) Iron ore was taken from Hibernia & the surrounding area as early as the Revolutionary war, for cannonball ammunition. Later we often found them, half buried, rusty & pitted. In the early 1900's, after the collapse that killed the men, Hibernia's mining was permanently shut down.

That’s right! It’s so weird, NJ is so tiny but has tons of spots I’ve never been. Grew up there & never even heard of those places till the movie. Then a friend of mine started dating a guy who had a lake house up there. I was always a beach girl. Now I’m in PA & I love all the lakes, creeks & of course the river 🌞

Cliff, I have noticed a minor design difference in the construction of the ore furnaces in Pennsylvania and the one seen in your New Jersey trek. Is there any particular reason and which in your opinion worked more efficiently? Either way, still very impressive. ...One note, why do the hoons need to tag something of historic significance? Very poor.

I doubt the design affects their function at all, probably just from being built in a different region.
