    Back a couple of years ago, my local gun shop had a new in the box ruger blackhawk stainless with 4 5/8 barrel in .45lc. It was out the door for just under 600 bucks. I had the money in my pocket, but I was focused on something else, and I let it go! Im still kicking myself for that stupidity!

    Ive had mine since 1980 & have even taken a mule deer with it @ 30 yards! Mine has a 4&5/8 barrel; & F.Y.I. they are high dollar, but you can get excellent wood grips from the Ruger factory; The plastic grips you were talking about,may have been from a Ruger Wrangler mistakenly installed! the Wrangler grips are smaller( thinner ) but they will fit the Blackhawk frame ,just smaller.

    One of the best Rugers I ever saw was from the late 80's. Birdshead grip, 3.5 inch barrel and in 45ACP. It was a custom some gun writer made. He also clipped the spring on a 1911 magazine to make it less stiff and that's how he reloaded the firearm. Coolest gun I ever saw.

    I had a 5 1/2” Ruger Blackhawk for a bit and I liked it. But it wasn’t what I wanted and ended up selling it not long after I got it. I wanted a 7 1/2” but at the time it wasn’t available. I’ve always preferred the longer barrel. It’s not as balanced but I just love the pointability and the look of a long 7 1/2” barrel.

    Ruger grip fitting is not optimal these days. But I keep a few pairs of stocks in my spares drawer. Ronnie was at the Shootists Holiday this year and some of those grips are really interesting. I have one of his brass frames on an old model.357 and it’s heavier than I care for.

  • @plowboysghost

    @plowboysghost

    11 ай бұрын

    I wondered about the weight of the brass gripframe. I knew it had to be heavier, but just how much/how bad is the question. After handling my Bisley Vaquero for days/weeks, the "plow" handle on the BH with these wood grips feels small and cramped. If I don't get more used to it..and I decide against the weight of brass, I could just get a Ruger Bisley steel frame...but then that's going to add weight, too. This Blackhawk with an aluminum grip frame is noticeably lighter than my Bisley Vaquero. Sidenote: I thought the ejector housing on the new BH would be aluminum, but this one is steel.

  • @thealsatian4232

    @thealsatian4232

    @@plowboysghost the new ejector housings appear to be steel. You may consider that Ronnie does all of these grip frames in aluminum as well. I may just replace mine with aluminum to restore the balance.

    Buffalo Bore list a minimum cylinder diameter for a Ruger to handle their p+ or p_++ loads. You might want to check that out. My .45 Colt Blackhawk was over their size recommendation. I have the 5 1/5 in barrel, also. I wish I had paid the extra at the time to get the 7 1/2" SS version. I hand load . I'm pushing a 300 grain XTP at 1470 fps. The primer was just starting to flatten, so I stop there. I'm not hunting elephants, anyhow. :)

    Yeah, I bought and shot Buffalo Bore's meanest "+P" .45 Colt stuff through my last Blackhawk, years ago. Garrett Cartridges offers some mean stuff, too...and heavier than BB does. All right, friend, Bearpaw grips, I have them on the 357/ 9mm convertible, And the Super blackhawk bisley 480, The comparison is to a model 83 454 casull, And while both are different ,,, in shape, and manufacture,, They are similar in feel when installed, You will need hardwood for heavy recoil, softer wood , like burl can work on lighter recoil So go get an expensive gun feel on your ruger.

    I love the looks of the walnut grips but my new Blackhawk .45lc came with the black grips and they fit perfectly. Not only that the black grips have a little rough pattern on them and it doesn’t want to slide in my hand when shooting it. I think I’ll keep them on the Blackhawk. To each it’s own as they say. Cheers brother!!! ❤ the video !!!! Starting to reload for it!! Very excited to work up some loads!!! Any good suggestions on powder/bullet weights??? Thanks again!!!

    Man, what a great revolver! It looks so good as is, I’d have a tough time changing anything on it. I have to ask though, what’s that cylinder gap at? I see a ton of daylight in there. Just curious.

    I though so, too. It's between .006-.007" when the trigger is released, and .004-.005" when the trigger is held back. I've had new S&W .44 Magnums with larger gaps.

    I've still got the Redhawk in .44 Mag. After seeing Garrett Cartridges' 405-gr load for the Redhawk that won't fit in the Blackhawk, I'm tempted to get one...but my Redhawk's grip to trigger relationship really doesn't suit me. Pulling the DA trigger catches my arthritic knuckle in a worse way than any other gun I own. I had the Redhawk .44 for my imaginary "bear gun", complete with leather Diamond D chest rig. I am refiguring for the weight and knuckle pain, as well as the bulkier, awkward feel of the Redhawk....and studying on the Blackhawk taking on that fanciful role.

    A person can carry that 45 colt pistol with a 45-70 rifle, get the Lyman 457191 mold, size it to 452 for the pistol, or leave it 457 for the rifle. Use one mold for both rifle and pistol.

    I've two 25-5's and they are fine with those rounds. They are fine with occasional +P rounds but if you're going to "magnumize" 45 Colt, which I wouldn't, you're better off with a Blackhawk.
