As a follow up, one of the reasons the .45 Colt is my favorite handgun cartridge is that you don't need to shoot nuclear loads to do most of what needs doing. I too have some bear loads worked up, 330 grain hard cast at 1300 fps from the muzzle of a 4.2 inch barrel. But to quote Taffin, my "everyday working load" is a 250 grain bullet at around 950 fps. Shoots easy, doesn't beat me, my gun or the cases up and will put down probably anything I fire it at. The grand ole 45 Colt is a very versatile cartridge and one that you'll find on my person most of the time.

Absolutely! A 255-gr cast bullet with a big meplat running 900-1000 fps is a bonafide killer.

Enjoyed the video, Mr. Plowboy. You're making me regret getting rid of my Ruger Blackhawk in .45 LC I had back in the late 1990s. You remind me of my Grandfather in how you think on a problem and work out how you can fix it yourself without spending big dollars having someone else out of your sight do the work. By doing it yourself you know exactly how it's done so if you need to do so again, you can. That always impresses me about people with talent like that. Cheers and a Hat Tip To You. Happy Shooting!

Plowboy, we think a lot along the same lines. I have been getting back into the Ruger Blackhawk 45s also. I had traded off all of my Blackhawks a while back but then started reading some old Elmer Keith articles and John Linebaugh writings and had myself a hankering for another Blackhawk. A week or two ago I ended up getting myself a new to me Ruger Blackhawk 45 and a Ruger Bisley Super Blackhawk in .44 mag. I have been loading up some H110 loads for the 45 also and tried to test out some loads yesterday but Thunderstorms cut that short. Anyways, keep on keeping on. If it works its not stupid.

I was a gunsmith for 30 years, and specialized in handguns. Went to the trade school in Trinidad Colorado ages ago, and afterwards appreciated under an old master gunsmith for four years after graduating. Now, with all that said, as a retired professional, I find your method to be quite sound. It was in effect, lapping the throats of chambers. Reamers are fine, IF you have them. However, I employed a similar method using bench mounted shop equipment, to lap a .38-40 that was grossly undersized. This was because I didn't have the proper size reamer, and lapping was an alternative method. And I got that weapon ready for the customer the next day. Bottom line is that you did just fine. Especially with the light touch, followed with the repeated checks. Proud of ya! 👍

yeah undersize chambers... a pet peeve of mine. when I first started fixing em I thought I could not afford a ream. I used a wooden dowel but same Idea.. now I just buy a ream cause they only run $15-25 I also had no way to really measure a hole so I had all kinds of bullets and they would run from .429 all the way to .452 so it was basically a go no go thing. but guess what? a complete set of machinists plug/pin gauges is only about $60 and it is money well spent. Ruger.... how many of them need fixing? a lot. their 44-40 guns had .430 bores and .426 or worse chambers. but.... as you noticed... jaketed bullets will hide a lot of sins. Pretty sure tho the reason so many guns have undersize chambers rather than say oversize is cause reamers wear. the acceptable wear by Rugers standards seems to be run it till it breaks. Anyway I aint against a little extra time or work to get something done my garage is full of tools I cut up and welded to be something else but if I can get the real deal tools for very little money that is the route I am gonna take.

i have a lot of colts but i like the remington just because on how fast u can switch out the cylinders. i can switch out a cylinder faster then u can reload a revolver. then u have a lot of people thinking they only make 45 colt in cowboy loads not realizing that u can get other loads for it just like the size of the bullets. cowboy loads are 25/30 grains of powder with a 200 grain bullet. i get 40 grain powder with 250 grain bullet but when i reload i mix powders then it is like shooting a 44 mag.i also shoot 40 s/w out of it works just fine it is a little off on the target anything 25 feet and over. then i hear that if u shoot modern powders through it it will blow up i tested that out and they shoot just fine but i also only use a ubirty for that or i don't mix the powders. a lot of people don't know that if u buy a black powder gun from colt that they are made by ubirty not colt and u want the top of the line ubirty the extra money is well worth it.

I did not know that was SOP so I called Ruger and the lady told me that was not a problem it was fine. I knew it wasn't. I admire that you reamed them yourself but I could only think of having to pay to send it out somewhere to a pro to ream them right. I had the same issue with my 357 mag Biseley. A hard case 180grain measured at .358 the chambers were set at 357 for some reason. Went in with a Dremel attachment that was .349 and wrapped Emery cloth on it and it measured out at .358. two passes through each chamber and done, the hard cast went through with finger pressure. I seat my 357 mag rifle rounds extra long as well. When seat them extra long they stick out the end of the cylinder on My LCR so I can't close the cylinder and vaporize that little LCR.

Back when I was really broke I would trim 44 mag cases with 'slight' splits in the rim to 44 spl so I could get some more miles out of em. but contrary to popular belief not only is there no 'long Colt' but there is also no 'short Colt'

The dollar store has cheap 2 foot carpet squares with rubber back that makes great mat for working on. The mic really picks up the sound on the table when you roll that iron around. Anyway good video. Stay cool.

Nothing wrong with the old ways sir. People on the hype train forget that before the advertising agencies set up shop in gun owner's heads things like the .45LC was considered more than adequate for bear defense. Even the big brown bears. Hell, they were carried in Africa where the game animals are all on steroids LOL They worked. With the right bullet and load I wouldn't feel outgunned. Only reason I'm not running one now is the price. Everything is outrageous right now. Where I'm at used single action Rugers are running $1000+ price tags. But, I'm not running 9mm either. Running a TISAS 1911 IN .45acp that was well under $500. Its not exactly what I wanted, but, with big heavy bullets it'll do for feral hogs which are my main 4 footed issue here in Florida. At least till the inflation comes down and I can get what I want at a more reasonable price.

I love how this channel shows the full spectrum of .45 Colt, from range loads to full-power black powder to the wide world of smokeless. Speaking of big bore revolvers, I've been shooting black powder with a Remington New Model Army and I love it. I think I'd like a .45 Colt cartridge gun to accompany it, perhaps the 1875 Remington Army with 7.5'' barrel, but I was wondering how you like its grip and balance, especially loaded. How does it compare to a 7.5'' Colt Peacemaker or 7'' Schofield? The single action bug has bitten and I'm trying to make good decisions, ha.

Thanks for the kind words. I really prefer the ergonomics and handling of the '73 Colt SAA pattern over the Remington and S&W. The clones of the Schofield not tolerating black powder without dragging/ gumming up was why it fell out of favor with me. The '75 Remington grip to trigger to hammer relationship just doesn't fit me like the Colt.

I had to shoot them out of my uncle’s old standard alloy grip frame Blackhawk. That was unpleasant. I ordered a reamer and pilot pack from Dave Manson. My mistake was going .452” rather than .453” since they’re still a touch snug.

Funny thing was...before I lapped these throats, they wouldn't chamber (loaded long) in this Vaquero, either, but they WOULD chamber in all my Colt SAA clones that they should never be fired in. I really let the Lee .452-300RF bullet itself be an effective "pin gauge" of sorts. I didn't go by my dial calipers. I went by that Lee bullet, sized .452, passing through the throats with relatively light finger pressure. None fall through/drop through, mind you....but a gentle push gets them through. I don't know if the throats a *perfect*...but I do know that it shot/grouped nicely after I did this video.
