I attended a church sale yesterday, open carrying my .357. While browsing, one of the little old ladies running the sale came up to me and said, "I feel safe now, cause if anything happens here I'll know who to holler for," lol. It's great to get positive comments like this.

Hi Plowboy! I watched that one too and I think part of the issue was that the guy had no holster at all, just the grip sticking out of his pocket. He was standing in line with his back to the door and the kid grabbed it and ran. " What do you do when someone takes your gun?" was a question raised. My answer is pull out the backup! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

With no holster being involved at all, that settles it in my mind. Were arguing over an idiot who wasnt open carrying, he was getting lucky. Some sort of holster is required... If what your saying is accurate about it being in a pocket, he was asking for it. To compare this to any sort of a holster carry option, either open or concealed, is a conceded misrepresentation of carrying in any form.

I think paying attention is the biggest thing regardless of if you’re concealed carrying or not. Some time ago I had almost gotten run off the road by a crazy driver in a big dodge pickup truck (I drive an old Camry). I had gotten away from him and was several miles away on a completely different road when I look in my mirror and notice a Jeep Cherokee has been behind me for more than a bit and is riding a bit too close to my bumper for my liking so I speed up and get some distance. I can see the driver is on her phone and her mouth is moving like she’s talking to someone. About a mile down the road I see the dodge pickup from earlier come out of a side street and pull up behind the jeep. The driver of the jeep gets off the phone, nudges closer to me again and then starts flashing her lights at me. Keep in mind it’s 2:00 in the afternoon and it’s sunny and bright. She sticker her arm out the window and starts waving me to pull over. Giving the timing of how quickly this started and when the dodge from earlier had shown up I felt something was off and didn’t respond except for to speed up a little more. I was heading to the downtown area of a small (but crowded) town where the gunshop I frequent had a transfer for me to pick up. I made the last turn before the last stretch of road to the town and gunned the engine leaving the keep and the dodge at the light behind me. The road winds left into the town and the turn is shaded by trees and a concrete fence before there’s two intersections. I make a right at the first intersection and then speed down the road and make a quick left. As I did that the jeep had made it to the first intersection I had made a right at and went straight, as I was making the left I saw the nose of the dodge poking and I saw him begin to turn left. A ups truck had come from the opposite direction of the second intersection I had made the left at and turned in behind me followed by another car, giving me some valuable distance between me and the dodge. To cut the story shorter I ended up making circles quickly around the town and lost both of them and pulled into a space right in front of the gunshops store front and dashed inside. Luckily for me a local sheriffs deputy I was familiar with was there and I explained the situation to him just as the jeep pulled in across the street, followed a few minutes later by the dodge. Deputy did his job and it turned out the guy in the dodge had priors for aggravated assault and when they searched his car found a stolen glock and a few bags of coke. The girl in the jeep was apparently his baby moma and had the baby in the car with her and was driving on a suspended license. I can’t help but wonder if I had not been paying attention what would’ve happened if I had stupidly pulled over. The gun I had waiting for transfer was the Colt Python I currently carry.

@@plowboysghost 4.25”. Kinda wish I had waited a bit longer to find a 3” at a better price i use a shoulder holster and wear a vest like you’d see in old westerns over it unbuttoned. The holster sits somewhere between 9/10 so it’s pretty quick to get into and at that position it isn’t visible from the front or the side. If I can find a holster maker to make it I want to have a pouch holster made like you’d get with the surplus CZ 82s for my officers model 1911. If you haven’t seen that holster it completely covers up the gun and looks like a utility pouch that you normally see tradesmen carry tools in but lately I’ve seen in my area people using them as pockets for carrying their wallets or phones. It won’t be as fast but it’ll fit into the dress code of my job a lot easier.

Assuming he is not being mirrored/hacked here on YT, he seems to think the 9mm is all the power you need for self-defense or for Law Enforcement. I'm just the opposite, as I'm of the opinion, and have been for several decades, that the only reason to carry a 9mm pistol is because many such pistols carry a LOT of rounds in a single magazine. After just shy of thirty years as an LEO, both in uniform and plain clothes, I'm of the firm opinion that big relatively slow projectiles make more effective man stoppers than ANY 9mm that HAS to expand to be an effective man stopper The .40S&W and up starts out big and stays that way even if it does not expand dramatically like a 9mm HAS too! By the way, he disagrees with me on every point I've made above. Excellent video as usual! Keep 'em comin'!!!

You don’t hear much about people snatching a cops gun, and yes I know they usually have level 2 holsters but all the same. I personally carry concealed because of where I live, I don’t see people open carrying so I don’t want to stand out.

I agree with your reasoning. I also majority open carry (a single action as well) for about 8 or so years now. Never had an issue, never had my gun stolen from the holster (which is hard to do from behind) . Now I agree that some places it would be wise to conceal (very crowded areas, gun free zones, etc), but to write off OC as bad everywhere is wrong. I have a pet peeve with the gun community, we'll take one fantasy idea and run with it as gospel. I'm in the opinion of who cares how you or Joe Blow carries THEIR gun, just carry the darn gun.

It's complicated and depends on the situation, which is unpredictable. I think open carry would deter 90% of perps. The worst 1% will shoot you in the back first. How the math works out for what is best who knows? I respect your opinion and I've considered open carrying a 6 gun but I think I'd only do it with a backup weapon available to the off hand.

Thanks for the great video. Most of the so-called experts will tell you that open carry is not a good idea, and their list of reasons goes on and on. They are entitled to their opinion. Opinions are like belly buttons. Everybody has one. I grew up in a high crime area and I knew all of the bad people, the smart ones and the stupid ones. None of them wanted to get shot. Open carry is like a sign on the fence that says, “beware of the dog.” I've traveled armed for more than 50 years, openly since 1985 and I will never know how many times trouble has taken a detour rather than confront an old man with a gun. I am 87 years old but the 45 on my side makes me 10 feet tall. It's my personal sign that says beware, this old dog still bites. Unarmed people are a much safer target. Recently, local law enforcement, being uninformed about the state statute that allows open carry with the proper permit, chose to challenge the validity of my decision. They firmly believed that open carry was against the law in the state of Rhode Island. I was threatened with arrest and possible jail time. Eventually the city solicitor was able to convince the Police Department that what I was doing was perfectly legal and that their opinion about my reason didn't matter. On the plus side, this was the first time since I started carrying openly 38 years ago that law enforcement even noticed me. Rhode Island has a population of over 1,000,000 and only 3500 people were issued a permit to carry. That's less than half of 1%. Many people with permits don't know that they are allowed to open carry or are afraid of reprisal from the Police if they do. I have never seen another Rhode Islander open carrying. I will no longer argue the point. My reasons are personal, and I no longer choose to share them or argue the validity of my actions. My reasons are none of your business. The only pertinent question is, “is it legal?” When asked “What are you afraid of?” My reply has always been, - Nothing.

Excellent points made. Both for and against methods of carrying a firearm. Having been a peace officer for 28 years, I'll tell you this. We were always watching everything arounds us. Both on duty and off. We were trained to observe. To give a detailed description of a suspect from a single glance. We watched the actions of people, constantly analysing suspicious activity. We were required to be armed off duty. And compelled to act upon a felony or assault within our view. We trained on weapon retention often. Many officers loose their lives being shot by their own weapon. Now my personal opinion. Long retired, and in my early 70's, I'm no longer the young and strong 6' 210# bodybuilder and able to fight off an attack. I'm now a 160# diabetic with severe balance issues. Thus I keep a firearm on me at all times. If confronted by an attack by one of more suspects, I will, repeat, will resort to deadly force. I rarely open carry. I don't advertise the fact I'm armed. Decades of training, and three shootings during my career, I can deploy a firearm quickly. And I definitely know how to use it. I'll not be a victim. Period. But I'll not tempt anyone to try for my weapon when visible. Thus, I carry a concealed handgun in an easily deployed position. I've got my own range out in the woods were I live. I train nearly every other day on drawing from concealed. Once a week, I'll train with live fire on one or more targets. No running and crouching down behind little plywood walls like the "tatical kids" do. I'm not physically able to. Nope, I draw and fire from where I stand. Or from a chair, as if in a car or seated at a restaurant. But the point is, I train. The fact that some people are killed trying to deploy a weapon from an unattainable holster position, frankly, that's a clear indication of a total lack of training. Period. They figured that they were armed, and thus capable. Wrong. Without proper training and consistent practice with the weapon system they use, they become a liability. Good intentions never won a confrontation let alone a gunfight. So, in closing I'll say this. If you decide to carry a weapon, be responsible enough to know how to shoot. When to shoot. And train and practice with it continually. Whether you carry open or concealed. And if placed in a situation where the difference in the outcome depends upon your actions, remember this. You are the "first responder" and how well you react will be how well you trained. Thanks for letting an old soldier and peace officer take a moment or your time.

I was having a conversation about guns and everything related with security and he told me about two guards from his company that were overseeing something in Atlanta and they were bragging about their shooting skills and speed of draw...before the nights end a couple guy's came in there and shot both of them dead because they were security they were targeted. The criminal's then carried out their intended robbery. I've never carried openly for self defense...only for hunting etc. . I don't want anyone around me to know that I'm armed. There are other instances out there similar to that story and I saw a video not long ago where an armed citizen was killed by an accomplice of an armed criminal he was following and had no idea the guy was following behind him.

But I know of a couple of times that open carry got the man killed in a robbery because the criminals knew he was armed and just walked in and killed the old boy and I know of another time a elderly guy was attacked when he had a concealed weapon and was able to surprise the criminal and killed the bad guy. I don’t wanna come out from Costco with my window smashed and having to report firearms stolen. I still think there’s an advantage in some senarios where it’s better to not be identified as having a firearm arm on you. Heck in a mass shooting would be an obvious one! Some being how I position myself in places, whether standin or sittin down, not to draw more attention then neccessary. Also with wheel guns have gotten to the point I almost always carry cross draw or reverse carry. Reverse carry more times then anything and have practiced the draw extensively. But when I have people in close proximity I've too picked up the habbit of resting my hand or wrist on the backstrap of the firearm and whatnot. Like you said comes down to mindset, vigilance, and knowing what's goin on around you more then the amount of ammo you got in the gun. I couldn't agree more with your presentation. My thinking on open carry, for me, is that yea, it might make me "the target" as so many say. Or, it might make criminals just move on to the next person. Hell, nobody can predict what's going to happen. Look at cops, generally trained, and always open carrying. They still get disarmed and shot with their own weapons. It can happen. I have been open carrying, on the daily, for years. Who knows how many bad guys have just not acted on account of seeing my gun there. Maybe none, or maybe one. If it's one, that's good enough for me. I, too, sometimes carry my .357 single action, especially if I've been out on my horse, or around the farm. I wear it into town. I'm good with it, people don't freak out seeing it, and that's how I'm going to keep doing it. To each his own, I say.

Good points. The average person is either afraid of guns or oblivious of anything around them. I was looking at some used cars with my aunt one day, and we talked with a garage owner who had an all grey G17 on his right hip. After we left the place I mentioned it and my aunt had completely failed to notice it. I carry concealed but there are plenty of open carriers around here and I don't worry about it either way. The amount of attention and the type of attention are dependent on where you are open carrying. After 9 years of 99% positive comments, thumbs up, etc... that most of the apprehension about open carry was mine and mine alone. After 22 years or so of concealed carrying exclusively, I (and the interweb "experts" on carry and all things gun related) really me/myself all worked up and nervous needlessly.

I have to be openly honest with you...I would never even *visit* a state with such lunacy masquerading as "law" as California. The only way I would live there is if you offered me complete control of the whole state so I could get rid of all the stupidity. You make some really good points. I just wanted to point out a couple of things. That "hardened target" door swings both ways: if a would-be shooter sees your gun, they might be dissuaded from attacking altogether, or they might view you as the biggest threat and target you first. The second point that I would like to make is that, especially in stores, there are a lot of waist-high obstacles that might obstruct a shooter's view of your open-carry gun, eliminating the whole advantage/disadvantage argument of open carry versus concealed carry. In the end, the Code Yellow situational awareness you talk about is key and the most important part. It's key and pays dividends. Gun or no gun, you're not doing much if your first sign of trouble is someone shooting you in the back.

I agree to a point and disagree in others. It has been my Experience, that many do NOT practice situational awareness at all while open carrying. in reality, it seems unlikely, that Situational awareness can be practiced at all times in all places and situations and the moment a criminal may capitalize. Also, i have done much personal research and in that research, have talked with convicted felons, who have committed armed robbery and murder in the process. Many of them stated, that if they saw someone carrying and were determined to commit the crime, those carrying were their first target, not only to eliminate the threat but to drive the point across of the seriousness of their intentions. This is something i NEVER hear others talk about or consider when talking about Open carrying. I am not oposed to OC but also feel OC opens one up to harassment in certain situations and environments. I feel OC should be practiced with sense, in the proper environment. And, dont get me started about the single action subject. I love when people with NO Experience tell those, who have the Experience, how it is, in the real world.

The unarmed and seemingly unarmed get far more attention from violent criminals...regardless of what criminals might say on the questionnaire. It makes no difference how vulnerable by mode of carry you are if you aren't paying attention to those around you and ready to react. If you are paying attention and are ready to react, any loss of "tactical advantage " you may have by open carrying could also be offset by a loss of "quick deployment" by concealed carrying. I've watched (in videos) people die who weren't open carrying. I've watched people die who were trying to dig a gun out of their drawers. The positives and negatives, as well as numerous varying factors and considerations are too plentiful to weigh out with an expectation of arriving at merely ONE indisputable, universally acceptable conclusion. In short: We are not all going to agree. I conceal carried exclusively for 22+ years. I've mostly open carried the last 9. There's not an argument against one or the other I haven't either experienced, heard, or carefully considered. Thank you for sharing your opinion!👍

I don’t really care if some wants open Carry. I personally would never choose to. I’m a retired LEO and have personally investigated two incidents where a person that was openly carrying was ambushed my armed robbers. One was shot in the back of the head without any indication of it going to happen. The other was distracted by one of the robbers and while he was dealing with him the other stuck a gun to his head and stole his gun before they robbed the store. Just my experience take it or leave it.

You investigated TWO incidents where a person that was open carrying was ambushed vs how many unarmed or seemingly unarmed people who were attacked?

@@plowboysghost You didn’t get the point here. They were targeting because they were open carrying. I interviewed the suspects in both cases. They said that when they entered the store they walked around scoping out the store and it’s customers. The first incident were the person was shot and killed. The suspect said they did want him to intervene and also wanted his gun , because they only had one gun. So the killed him before he knew what was happening. ( the one with the gun that shot and killed him was carrying concealed!) the second incident was basically the same but they didn’t kill him just took him at gun point and took his gun. In both cases I asked them if he was carrying concealed would they have noticed them. They said no that they would have just thought they were just a normal customer and no threat to them. But in both cases the person that was carrying open was singled out and attacked one killed because of it.

@@americanpatriot477 my point is that statistically you far more likely to be attacked by either being unarmed or appearing unarmed, and therefore the threat of being attacked FOR open carrying is comparatively nil. Such a concern is not a reason to be against open carry. It should be a reason to be FOR open carry...but I don't care how anyone carries. I consider everyone armed and treat them all accordingly.

@@plowboysghost I would have to agree with that. But why take the chance? I would rather be looked at as a victim than a threat to a armed person who is going to do something dangerous. The cowardly thugs don’t play fair so why should we. I would rather appear weak and scared, then when the opportunity arises do what’s necessary to protect myself and the innocent people with me. Than to draw the attention of armed suspects from the very beginning of an incident. There have been numerous uniformed officers that have been shot or killed while either walking in on a robbery of was in the store when it went down. As a safety/ tactical measure I would not want the attacker attention on me.

@@americanpatriot477 It's not taking a greater chance if far more people who appear unarmed are attacked. It's taking a greater chance to conceal carry and appear helpless and weak.

Personally I don’t want anyone knowing that I’m carrying a pistol, it’s none of their business. I have nothing against open carry, in fact do it quite often while at home. But while out and about I prefer concealed. I definitely get where you’re coming from and you’re not wrong either.

Great video! Remember a generation ago, kids used to take their guns to school with them.....open carrying! Through a generation of brainwashing, people turned from concealing a weapon means your a criminal to the attitude that if you open carry your stupid. It's sad to see people shaming open carry and don't realize that they are only making the world more afraid of firearms and actually, "shooting themselves in the foot" in regards to our gun rights. Stay safe!

In Michigan here it is legal but it’s not really acceptable by most the public. There’s a good chance the police may be called depend on where you’re carrying and it just becomes a hassle imo.
