“’Damsel In Distress’ is an homage to Joni Mitchell in some ways,” says Wainwright, “particularly the structure. My husband and I now live in Laurel Canyon. I wasn’t that familiar with Joni’s music but Jörn became obsessed and took me on a journey into her music. We ended up hanging out with her and I get now why she’s one of the greats. So it’s part Laurel Canyon, part a song about a personal relationship that I’m trying to come to terms with, but mostly my Mitchell virginity being broken.”

Damsel in Distress is one of the best songs I've heard in a long time by anyone. The string arrangement and vocals are absolutely wonderful.

The first time I heard Rufus's music was when he opened for Tori Amos on her Strange Little Girls tour in 2001. He sang 'Cigarettes and chocolate milk', and that was all it took...I was done. As Rufus sings in 'The Art Teacher', " I was just a girl then; Never have I loved since then" ♡ Rufus, your voice is magic ♡ I am soooo looking forward to hearing your new songs!

I don't want to take anything away from this magnificent song but I hear so many references to favourites of mine, like How Soon is Now, or the string arrangements in Nick Drake's records, choral effects that remind of Sufjan Stevens' finest, Costello like phrasing - but all of that immersed in the deep lushness of Rufus. I came to this album after hearing Peaceful Afternoon but this song rapidly became my favorite!
