I liked the Web Novel folks going back for the Light Novel releases. They got the gist of it of a swordsman being a dick to Rudy, blah blah blah, but then it turns out its *just* Soldat.

With things like this, there's almost always a positive outcome and a negative outcome-a 50/50, if you will. We just never know which one it's going to be or how it's going to look. Except here, we've been shown in every episode from the beginning that Rudy did not care if he just died, like, woops, a bear killed me or something. He just saved himself and the others on a whim, then he made friends, which gave him hope, so he started trying to live more. But then it all came crashing down, and well, the knife is right there, and he has nothing else to lose... It's pure depression, and not knowing how to deal with it, he turns to suicide. This is how depression manifests in real life, too. Yeah, people have different reasons, and some last longer than others, but when you least expect it, they commit suicide or at least contemplate suicide based on the fact that they made a small mistake. For most people, any type of mistake seems like a small thing, but for people with depression, it's the end of the road; they think they've lost it all and that there's no second chance because it's happened before. Depression leads to negative feelings and thoughts, sometimes even when they have a decent social or support circle, which lead to irrational behavior, which leads to suicide.

​@@Vanele1 I don't know about that; if you didn't notice, he spent more than a year in depression. Depression has a way of making you emotional and forgoing any sort of objective or logical way of talking yourself out of something like suicide. In that moment, he felt like he lost the only person that cared about him and the friends he made from Counter Arrow's party because he knew that they would take Sara's side, meaning that he had nothing left after that long year of forming friendships. So he did indeed attempt to commit suicide. Suicide and depression are fickle things that build up over time, and even after you think you're doing better and making progress, one small mistake can send you back in a downward spiral, making you think you lost everything, that you're nothing, that no one likes you, and that maybe they never did. Then boom, your only thought is if committing suicide is the only way you'll have peace from depression... Luckily for him, Soldat was there to stop him.

Rudeus just don't think, and just does it without hesitation. I feel he still can't get over his depression due to (Eris' mistakenly bad written letter and leaving him), since he drags that depression with him for a long time, never left it, and never moved on. That depression of his will also affects the people around him especially Sara since she's a character that most of the time him saving her and her group.

the scene where Rudius grapped the knife have been living rentfree in my head since i saw it. there was absolutely no hesitation from his side. hadn't it been for Soldat, he would 100% killed himself there.

I find the direction here very good. The speed and lack of hesitation is 100x more powerful than the typical approach in fiction would've been, where the character would have held the pose in dramatic tension (which nobody watching would buy was actually tense). The speed of that action sells the danger and sincerity so much better than typical dramatic posturing. And yes, Sol's reaction speed is also on point. Makes him more of a hero.

Soldat knocking the blade out of Rudy's hand in the split second he raised it to his neck...it's incredibly understated in the show and if you blink you miss it, but to me that's what makes it so impactful. It is forever one of the absolute best anime scenes IMO. - btw; imagine being Eris and leaving Rudy to become a better fighter, all to find out he killed himself in some faraway town because he had crippling depression and gynophobia. It wouldn't be her fault, but I bet it sure would feel that way to her.

Adults (which mentally, Rudy is) have far better consequence ideation. His deduction and reaction is a reasonable one given his experiences, but not Eris' fault exactly.

​@@bigderek9761ehh. Both are equally "at fault", at the same time, they aren't. Yeah, Rudy is mentally an adult. However, you left the most important part, he's an adult with a stunted growth. Him praising Roxy's pantsu, to keeping Eris' hair and sniffing it. These are evident signs of "mental issues" (let's keep it vague, I'm not an expert on mental health). Eris on the other hand, well, she could have said something more "assuring" to Rudy, because let's face it, the letter WAS DEFINITELY vague 😂 However, this isn't entirely her fault. To me, this is another case of the "Paul incident". Eris knows how capable Rudy is. The dude is reliable, smart and strong, after all. MAYBE, Eris thought that Rudy could get the message. Sadly, Eris was wrong. Besides, she was also just a kid. She definitely didn't thought of the consequences of leaving such a vague message. Adults also do this kind of shit all the time so can't really blame her 😂 I'm anime only so I don't know the exact details in the LN. However, the present situation is a "consequence" of Rudy being a reliable, smart and strong dude. Folks around him tend to think that "yo, this dude is smart, strong, etc., I'm sure he'll figure it out", without knowing and realizing that he is still just a kid with a stunted emotional growth. Why do I keep on saying he's still a kid? I'm referring to the Rudy from the demon continent until the part where Eris left him. He's definitely just a kid in those arcs

Soldat is such a bro to Rudy. Even though he had no obligations to stick his neck out for Rudy, he did so anyway because that's just who he is. Then proceeds to watch over Rudy in order for him to move on with Sara and his trauma. Good video as always

I thought the last episode finally did a good job portraying just how depressed Rudeus was

I just cant miss any of this mans content. How does he answer all the questions I have about the episode is remarkable. I really love how amazing and real these characters are in this series! I truly prefer and enjoy series when the characters are more down to earth and feel human it makes their world and journey more interesting.

That's what I thought too after watching ep 3. Soldat is such a bro for being there for Rudeus at his lowest. Although he was arrogant at the start, he have a reason for being like that and he also reminded Redues what he looks like from his perspective. He's such a good character overall.

Season 2 yet again delivers, and lives up to why I considered it my anime of the year in 2022. Rudeus is also my alltime fav MC rn ngl. I cannot wait to see where this season goes. I loved season 1 so much.

I've always been amazed of how deeply detailed and real Mushoku Tensei is with its characters, world, and overall atmosphere, but with the anime cutting and leaving some parts off, it feels incomplete and rushed (though I assumingly understand why). This is the only series ever to convince me to read a LN. I thought it would just be a less graphic-y manga. I’m so glad I was wrong. It fleshes out things far more than the manga or anime. You get to understand a lot more of his internal struggles, and the things he does make a lot more sense. He’s still a creepy perv at times, but you get a lot more of him actively recognizing that and trying to make better decisions.

God i really hope Soldat stays with us for many episodes. He's just such a great character

My shonen-head friends really didn’t like this season but this might have been one of my favorite shows during this anime season

Let me be clear first, Eris is the best girl, but Sara surely my favorite female character. Her flawed character and the lack of sympathy toward depressed Rudeus, it show her experience and how she view the world around her giving her character a lot of rooms to improve. When it comes to a genius character like Rudeus, she just an ordinary girl living the live of adventurer and hardship at the young age. Yet the story of Sara as the main character would still be very interesting, that truly show how great of a character Sara is being written.

When I say heart Broken I mean to spend days in pain. Can't think can even talk. I agree with you. I've unfortunately had a very similar experience to Rudy. One minute they're there, the next they're gone. He wasn't ready for a relationship, but I understand the wanting to have that other person. When what he had begun building was instantly destroyed all that pain came flooding back plus this new pain on top of that. Ugh, I really fuckin hated it for him. It's such a terrible experience to go through and ending it just seems so easy sometimes.

8:49 I immediately thought of that same scene from his old life when Rudeus finally snapped and went after Soldat. Luckily Soldat reacted to it in a very different way, but I think that's because Soldat recognized that he'd gone a bit too far. With previous-life Rudeus and his friend, they'd been having fun, playing games, and then an offhand comment hit a nerve, prompting a sudden outpouring of anger that seemed unprovoked. With Soldat, though, you could tell even as he was lying there getting his face used as a punching bag, he realized that Rudeus had clearly been in a vulnerable emotional state (I mean, what does it usually mean when you see a guy drowning his sorrows?), and realized that using the opportunity to take shots at him hadn't been the right thing to do. The story gives Soldat some good character progression. He's good at reading and understanding people, which leads him to dislike Rudeus initially when he's clearly putting up a facade, but also impels him to genuinely help Rudeus once the facade is gone and he sees the true person.

@aninews I just wanted to also point out that in the episode Sara throws the knife that Rudeus bought her back at him and that's what he tries to use on himself, but in the novel she never throws the knife at him. Rudeus tries to use his own knife from his belt.

When Rudy was about to end it with that knife I had to pause and step away for a second I felt that😢 The Depths to this story is amazing definitely one of my top 10 favorite animes of all time

Hi Anime only here. First of all, I really appreciate this content, its nice to get some more in depth information about what happens in the light novel in a compact format like this. Now, I havent seen a lot of this reviews and I was wondering if the anime ever skips important stuff or if its just this more in depth information?

8:00 She says 最悪 (saiaku) in the Japanese versions of both the anime and the light novel. It literally means "the worst," and can be translated to "awful" and "what a disaster" like you showed. However, when said by itself, it usually refers (in my experience watching anime, at the very least) to the opposing party, rather than the situation in general (in which case you'd likely say something like 最悪な状況だな ("what a terrible situation") rather than just say "saiaku"). That's why it's perfectly reasonable for Rudy to think that Sara was referring to him - without any context, that's what most people would think.

Soldat is definitely based however i thought Rudy's mask wasn't only for his sake but for the sake of finding his mother. I mean he didn't act too different from how he did in dead end. He wasn't as goofy but he Kinda seemed exactly how he was back with the nobles before the mana disaster.

Soldat was, in essence, Paul. The best parts of Paul. The Paul that a teenage Rudy really needed, but couldn't find. A supportive father figure who Rudy could talk to and help relate with, when going through the trials and tribulations of those awkward teenage years.

He goes and drowns his sorrow and ends up saying things he doesn't really mean in a vain attempt to ease a little of his mountain of pain only to be heard by her at which point she blows up at him. I just noticed that they put in "what a disaster..." in the Dub which is cool!

I know im late to this video but honestly this episode and added context in this video made for the episode that made me cry for the first time to an anime. Honestly rudy almost killing himself over such a hard rejection and fear of loneliness hit me so hard. Not having a friend to save me was the hardest and seeing rudy have that friend and helping others in their depressions has changed me as a person and honestly makes me wanna work harder to be happy.
