I have been playing online exclusively for years and my philosophy has always been "less is more". Yeah you can go over board with automation or graphics even on 2d maps, but we have fun not because of the pretty graphics but rather the stories we tell. Minimal Dynamic lighting (maybe with a flickering torch or two), a dyson logos map, and a table of good players, that's the sweet spot for me.

This looks like a great product but I am scared that my players will never be able to go back to Theater of the Mind play if I ever make them play with this and my players might no be so on-board if they have to pay for it (the seats for people using the demo look like a great way for this kind of instance) Otherwise, loving the product and discovered it through A Squirrel Plays channel which made a good overview of it

Interesting, but the whole 3D angle is less important to me and my players than the sort of functionality provided when playing something like Pathfinder 1/2 in Foundry VTT, in terms of the game and tracking assistance. The 2D presentations are still very effective and the smoothing of game flow provided by the VTT (in my case, Foundry) is so much more valuable to the experience at the table. However, I can image game groups who play systems that are less demanding, mechanically, and would benefit from this type of virtual environment. The appeal of that might even be a powerful draw to pull more gamers into that type of play style. Maybe. These 3D tabletops need to smooth the player and especially GM experience enormously before they'll really be capable of gaining momentum that makes for the "future of VTTs." They aren't close at all, yet. (AI may change this more than anything in around 2 years, though!)

This genuinely looks fantastic. At the same time I've always been reluctant to get into 3D VTTs because it's always seemed like it's way too much work on the GM. It's nice that there are so many assets because that's the second issue I would bring up. I don't know about this one, I might check the demo just to see how it works, but I think I'm just too used to 2D at this point that it would be hard to make the transition.

A question that comes immediately to *my* mind is, how well does it handle building, running, and playing, a space with a lot of verticality? Like, how does it handle stacking rooms on top of each other and then peeling away everything above the layer you want to focus on until your focus changes?

Interesting that you mention that. The devs just released some video of vertical building. To move up and down “floors” you just slide a little meter thing on the screen.

A vtt is more than just a visual experience. The sheet is not enough, without automation. At the moment, this product feels more of a 3D map generator than an actual VTT.

A vtt only needs to be, ya know, a virtual tabletop. If it has maps with online functionality so I can interact with them with friends, and preferably *view* character sheets while I'm at it, it does everything I need

IF players can just use the free demo than it's a pretty good deal. Can't expect everyone to get TTS for 20 bucks.

There is this option if you get the "Unlock Player Seats" DLC from our current campaign. Don't forget though that we also support exports for other VTTs, which means you can use this as a map maker ;)

This looks like great software that I would love to use if I was into VTT. Especially because it is so flexible with genres and game systems. Since I like to switch things up a lot, you only have to learn one kind of software for all of those. But to be honest after trying out online play for a couple of months, I decided to stick with the in-person approach for my sessions. I think you lose a lot of the human interaction and the charm of gathering around a table, when you play online. But though it's not my cup of tea, I can see why some people prefer it that way.

Been waiting to find something to sell me off of The TTRPG Engine VTT, this is close but just doesnt seem to be nearly as module. Any TTRPG that lets me turn a ceramic bowl into a stadium dome is gonna be hard to be tho. I only play in person, and use the VTT for visual elements. Online sessions could be different.

Been using FGU for awhile now, and the sound effect integration has done more to help my group's immersion and enjoyment than anything. I have this arbitrary line where the graphics begin to be too good and ruin the 'playing make believe' aspect of our games. Plus, the biggest aid we get from FGU is the handling of all the maths and automations. I wish them luck, but don't see this software being for my table.

  • @JasonFuhrman

Working in the visual industry, I appreciate this, but also, I feel the magic of TTRPGs is what your imagination creates. Running around in a psuedo videogame world kind of ruins the fun. I'm guilty of making fancy maps in Foundry VTT and part of me thinks even that might be going a little too far. You give the players too much to see and they can't create the immersive experience in their minds, which is a big part of playing TTRPGs.

This is my feeling as well. Impressive software, but I don’t really want my TTRPG sessions to be more like a video game.

I am not sure 3D vtt is the way to go, unless it offers some AI or random generation options that don't suck and can speed up your creation by a lot. Otherwise you can just go and use the GM mode of divinity original sin or similar games

I'm not a fan of 3d vtts and will probably never use them. The amount of time I have for gm-prep is limited already and adding map-building in a 3d environment will consume an unneccessary amount of time. I'd rather have a good written adventure for my players than a mediocre one with assets that won't be able to challenge theatre of the mind.

Kinda feels like the idea of Foundry in 3D. Impressive software, but for me it seems like focusing in the wrong direction. I don’t care about having realistic graphics in a VTT. I prefer having things more abstract and open to interpretation and improvisation.
