When it comes to D&D it was at its peak balance around 3.5 which still had all the old lore from the older systems usable with incredible results. 4th ed- was an attempt to limit players into a box format.. failure. 5th ed- trying to find its way out of the box with a watered down version of unearthed arcana which lured me back into the game to be disappointed. As it was indeed my favorite book. But alas it was the propaganda pamphlet that was empowered by the big bucks with movies, media, and even an adventure series turned live action Romance novel (Baldurs gate 3). They already tried to yank the old open license from under pathfinder and all other systems but failed. So what do they do? Change the lore in order to phase out things they do not want to deal with and call it progression.. ---------- Oh and then there was this one DM i met online I think was an AI test bot--------- DM: You want to play a Dragon? SURE but all characters have the same stats because.. um.. There are players who voted for Biden and the others voted for Trump. Me: Since when do real life politics have a place in D&D? DM: Because the Racial statistics blocks are racist. Me: Why don't they just call them Species traits.. Instead of Racial traits..? DM: Listen you have to pick where you want a +2 everyone gets +2. Me: I know where you can put your +2.. There are literally campaign settings like Thay.. Where slavery is part of the commerce. I mean the Red wizards weren't wrote out of the movie were they? If sensitivity of the masses is an issue maybe they should just come up with their own game called Biggots and Ballots. This is Dungeons and Dragons where you try to promote or prevent situations based on your chosen concept in a playable story setting and in many Chaotic neutral concepts they do both. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- =Additional RPG's to try= Amber - Diceless RPG where your attention to details & rp skill can always turn the tables with explanations using the setting. Battletech - Piloting billions maybe even trillions of credits in gear to crush foes. Then scavenging those foes parts and crushing more foes. Sailor Moon - A single book RPG for Pretty amusing if not comical RP where you can even craft your own powers using a point system if the ones you seek are not listed. Great for RP and a Storyteller crafting some of the meanest unique threats to truly test your player heroes or.. villians group. Hol - The Holmysters entire point is to cheat and screw over players whenever they want. Its your job to try and survive.. Good luck. :/ Have the greatest gaming experiences my dear players.

Really creative, but no doubt challenging to run and play. To your point, mindset is pretty binary for this game to work.

I'm going to coin a term now if it there isn't one already: Rubberpunk. Rubber for the so called "rubber hose" era of animation and Punk for its cynical adult themes. One thing that annoys me is that there are 4 color playing card decks, but most of them use green clubs, black spades, red hearts, and blue diamonds. I found a few variants that do use a blue club, but no yellow spades or green diamonds.

As a DM its easier for me to worldbuild using lunacy as opposed to realism, despite always wanting my worlds to feel realistic and believable. I love that this game allows you to completely embrace lunacy. Running this game I would include a death mechanic because then you can introduce things like cartoon hell, cartoon heaven, cartoon limbo, and gives reason for there being demons and devils just hanging around on the surface world. If theres perma-death then it can raise the stakes of some encounters and PCs can decide whether or not their fallen ally is worth travelling to one of the afterlifes for xD

If the old cartoons dont help, there’s also those indie animations Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel. Think they have a different style to the examples you used but should fit well. By different style I mean that the animation isn’t like the old cartoons with cartoon logic and all. It’s not “altered by some substance” chaotic

I often talk about "cartoon logic" for the importance for in-world consistency. Hilarious to see an entire game lean so far into the cartoon logic of RPGs in general by creating a cartoon RPG in specific. I instantly backed this.

Yup, people are bad armor. 9x19 Parabellum goes right through a person. Sadly, it doesn't blow the lung out of the body, the damage dealt by slow full metal jacket projectiles is not very big, but will 100% kill, often in one shot, even if not always in an instant.

I do also wanna add DnD 5e becoming more simple ain't remotely what I think anyone wants....reason is that when ever you hear that, what it means is dumb down the choices for the players at the cost of the DM, I rather run a old 40k D100 system any day despite the complexity and crunch because unlike 5e the complexity those systems have are on purpose and not the result of Wotc literally releasing unfinished products and than giving me the fucking permission to finish there fucking work. I would want dnd5e more "complex" to be more chewy and absolutely not like savage land or gurp, ore character cool mechanics....so I am in like 4th edition Warhammer fantasy, or pathfinder 2e.... because the more you DM other systems the more you wonder why people keep buying DND5e book. Legend of the five rings, awesome setting, beautiful art, artistically challenging to run but mechanically superior to DND, adventure models with actual aid....and when FF killed it they made a 5e conversation kit for it.... because when I think "a stat system emphasising intent and emotional weight rather than physical characteristics" I clearly think 5e the int and dex game where players roll what ever is required for the wizard to feel happy. Like its a nit pick but I have had the int vs wis debate, but fundamentally, it's the wotc cuddling of wizards that makes that debate even a issue.... But I am rambling now.... anyways, I also ran OG dead lands, wasn't perfect but it has something 5e can't have, character in its mechanics....why because dnd5e is scared of telling players to pick a race option and instead tell them "do what ever you want and than burden the DM with more work" thanks Tashas cauldron, we really needed to remove the stats for players Giving Lip to Fria Ligan is fucking retarded, there systems are by far better made by Swedish and European talent that may not always hit the mark, but symbariom is not bad, it's pretty decent, and there catalogue. unlike Wotc has appeal not in down watered trash but in quality of choice. There is a reason Dragons and Demons, a Swedish copy paste job kinda....of original DnD is going strong decades after it made it big in Sweden and just like dnd faded when all the kids grew up and became adults with a wallet. Turns out you can actually make a better DnD than wotcy if you just try hard enough.

somehow your videos are impactful and memorable to me. Weirdly enough, year later, your wotc and 5e critique sent me down the rabbit hole of osr and retro-clone adjacent games even though initially I only got into ttrpgs when I learned that there are games that are wildly different from dungeon crawlers and monster hunting adventures. I only watched like 3 of your videos but you informed what's in my library more than any other youtuber, except for maybe Gila RPGs highlighting snow's work as his favourite. To return the favor - since you're ok with PDFs, you may want to check out TTRPGs for Palestine. Horrible occasion, great cause (medical aid), cool games. I don't know how to talk about it appropriately, but I'd rather do than won't. +pls, consider linking related videos in the description and or pinned comment

Origins is definitely boardgame centric, but has always had a strong showing for CCGs and RPGs, the tabletop miniatures segment has had a lot of paucity (ebs and flows) over the years. If RPGs are your main thing, registering well enough in advance is neccessary to get into any or most sessions. I registered a few weeks before the con, and struggled to find games that fit my tastes.... but searching the list of RPGs in total showed a LOT that looked intrigueing (for those smart enough to register early)
