Rooted In Acceptance; Deconstructing Black Beauty Standards | Ameenah Shaw | TEDxBethnal Green Road

Embark on a poignant journey with Ameenah Shaw, a seasoned hairdresser, as she reflects on the intricate narrative of black women's hair. With over two decades of experience, Ameenah sheds light on the profound impact societal biases have on the self-perception of black women, illustrated through the heartbreaking story of Ariana, a young girl grappling with her identity in the face of narrow beauty standards.
Through her TEDx talk, Ameenah confronts the historical roots of these damaging narratives, tracing them back to the times of slavery. She unveils how discriminatory language and societal norms have long been used to control and distort the natural beauty of black women.
But Ameenah is not merely a witness to this narrative; she is a fierce advocate for change. With a mission to empower self-acceptance, self-love, and self-validation, Ameenah calls for a deeper understanding of the historical pain embedded in society's beauty standards. She invites us to embrace natural beauty that is rooted in acceptance. As a nurturer and creative individual, Ameenah has combined both attributes with her 20+ years of experience as a Hairstylist, in order to pursue her passion for helping women to improve their relationship with their hair. She is a TV presenter and also the Founder of NHT London, through which she produces natural hair care products and facilitates educational workshops and programs. Ameenah aspires to empower women to challenge their perception and beliefs surrounding beauty, by coaching them through a holistic approach to haircare, with a focus on helping them establish a deeper self-awareness of their unconscious negative self-talk. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

SubhanAllah. This was deep. Just to think how generational trauma has affected the self esteem and confidence of so many women is truly heartbreaking. And it's still going on till this day. So many people chasing unrealistic standards of beauty if only they knew, true self love and confidence can only come from accepting and loving the way Allah swt has created you. Thank you for speaking about this and I hope and pray it benefits many women

This talk changed so much in my life, maashaAllah. As a white woman raising mixed race children, this talk helped me to understand the importance of my daughters loving their hair because doing so is loving themselves. Thank you, Ameenah.

I remember that clip- it upset me to my core. That child articulated the pain of falling short of so-called beauty standards. We have to change the narrative in our communities. Our women and girls deserve to feel empowered. They are queens.
