@Aidan Johnathan You are welcome xD
FYI, The Roots "Here I Come" is my official hype song.
I was looking for a side dish for the prime rib I’m cooking on Christmas and you saved me again, Chef John! Thank you, this is PERFECT!
Ok, so... I made this for Christmas dinner with my family. Turned out really good. However, I did notice it needed a bit more salt than I would normally feel comfortable with. It was still uber tasty. That all said, my wife found the mason jar of "chicken stock" and brought it to me just a minute ago and asked me to smell it. It was....home juiced APPLE JUICE! I couldn't believe it! I had pulled it out of the freezer thinking it was stock, because was senza label (not typical in our household). Oh, well. It was a huge hit, anyway! I made 1 1/5 of the recipe and divided it between to slightly smaller casserole dishes and took home about 1/4 of what we took. I'll be sure to check the "stock" before I unfreeze it.

That's hilarious. My husband ate our dogs food of the fridge once if it makes you feel better. The dog had been sick so I put shredded chicken in with her kibble to coax her to eat. She didn't eat it that night so I put in a paper bowl inside a plastic bag in the fridge. I went to give it to the dog for breakfast and was baffled when I couldn't find it in the morning. I almost didn't have the heart to tell him when we figured it out the next day. Glad all turned out well. Apple juice sounds pretty good!

So glad you featured rutabagas. They are such a delicious vegetable and so under used. Love your videos.

yeah, they're not super popular outside of Europe and East Asia it seems like. Other than farmers and Chinese or Korean immigrants I dont know many people in the US that eat or grow them.

@@arthas640 When I was a little girl my aunt Julia grew them in her garden. She always shared them with the rest of the family. I loved them. I'm in my 80's now and still grow them in my southwestern US garden.
Just had this for dinner, added carrots as well. Totally delicious. Thank you
This guy makes me wanna get in the kitchen!
after the 'Roots' reference, it's safe to say I love you.
Where have you been all my life. I'm so glad I found this channel!
I made this recipe last night, but without the parsnip and celery root because the store didn't have them. It was still delicious. I will make this recipe again. Thank you Chef John.
The way u describe with light music sounds made your videos so special ! Thanks fpr sharing this lovely n healthy veggie recipe. I definitely wanna make this as our special weekend menu for me and my family........
Chef John's videos always feel so fresh, even a 2011 video in 2020
I love almost everything you do Chef John. My only consistent desire is more cheese for that delectable browned topping. Just sayin
Definately have made this about 3 times this holiday season; its been a total hit my friend. THANK YOU!
i love stumbling across an older chef john video. the style has changed a little but the personality has not diminished
@foodwishes OMG That looks Great!! But Chef John, you yourself are even more awesome for not only knowing who the Roots are, but also listening to them and knowing the band members!! You Rock!!
i do a similar dish with blue cheese added! its "thyme tested" too!

I was thinking cheddar and now blue cheese 🤗
Quite an upbeat and thorough episode, thank you Chef John I will be making this several times during the upcoming Holidays.
I rarely enjoy *hearing* the voices of people reading their scripts in KZread videos. Nor do I often enjoy *watching* them talk and cook! Lol (People aren’t really my thing at this point in my life. 😂) But I do enjoy *your* narration, and watching your hands do the prep and cooking! There’s something extraordinarily natural, spontaneous-sounding, and loveable about you! I’m assuming you too develop a script. But you present the script in such a delightful way! Thanks! Oh and I like your recipes too! Gush gush
Thank you so much. For many years I used a recipe from the Time Life series of cookbooks called Good Cooks. An 80's series. They had a turnip au gratin and I swapped rutabaga. It was delicious but prepping the rutabaga was very time consuming...though we gladly do it once a year and do a large baking pan full. It's delicious. Can't wait to try this!
Chef John is cool, but he gets extra cool points for listening to The Roots.
Food and listening to The Roots? Chef John never cease to amaze me .
I made something similar tonight! I used Jerusalem Artichokes (Sunchokes), Potatoes and Celery Root. Kept the spices as Chef suggested. It was divine!!
Sounds really good. At first I thought it was just the old potato au gratin, but I really like the idea of adding celrey root, turnip, rudebaker. Must make this.
Love your videos. Creative, practical and full of flavour.
Can't wait to try this! Thanks!
Don't think for one minute on any negative comment made by any viewer. You do great work and keep doing it
Thank you for this great video =))) I ate potato gratin yesterday & i was searching for the recipe ... I wake up today & i found you uploaded it !!!!!!! thank you sooooooooooooo much :)))))

You don't extend words by repeating the silent vowel. That's insane.
Mmmm...take me home with you..Love your dishes!
I made this and it turned out so yummy! Love your videos!! :)
Arresting dish in deliciousness-yum yum
This turned out great for me! I don't think I've ever cooked a turnip before... Even though there's tons of cream and butter in this, considering my diet for the last week and a half has been 60% Halloween candy I'm glad to get some root veggies into me one way or another. Plus butter and cream is delicious! I'll definitely be making this again.

Well, use veg stock. That is a decision you could make and it would fix the prob.
Chef John you simply awesome. I just wanted to let you know.
i love you chef john!
Having watched an old video and this video, and some of the day old videos, it is amazing how much the sound quality has improved. His voice went from wimpy to normalized then on to deep and sultry.
This is great recipe for Thanksgiving. I am so making this instead of the box stuff!
I love this guy's voice, got something of 'the big easy' about it.
As always, great video! :)
3:10 i see what you did there Chef John sneaking in some extra cayenne ehh ;DDD

My 56 year old mother loves ?uestlove. I love potatoes au gratin (or whatever the proper name is). There is just a lot of love here.
i would try it.never had before.

that looks delicious
I love root vegetables. I especially like them roasted because they are so sweet and delicious after roasting.
Outstanding
Wow Chef you listen to the Roots?! My respect for you went from 100% to 101%
thanks, chef john!!!!!
When he said, “I only used chicken stock so this would not be vegetarian and “Don’t question the thyme, it’s been thyme tested.” 🤣 I’m still trying to figure out if this channel is actually a cooking channel or a comedy channel! 😂
Just one word YUM.
2:56 its been 'thyme' tested! Chef John is the most quotable Chef!
great! when i try this, im gonna thicken up the sauce with some roux so its not so soupy thanks for the inspiration
That Rocks!!
I've watched this a few times now, and I think I know what I'm going to do. All the ingredients are fine except the turnip, cos I haven't any. I will add some thinly sliced beetroot instead. Imagine that colour! (I'm a Brit!) I will also add some crushed bacon pieces, or some finely diced ham leftovers and just a whiff of onion. What else? Nowt. I'll be giving it a try this Sunday 19.06.2022. That's the thing with KZread. It's a time machine!!
I love you Chef John
Awesome.
2:56 "its been 'thyme' tested."
I love parsnip, favourite root veg. Will make this soon, hope the parsnippiness doesn't get lost in the mix.
One of my favorite rutabaga recipe is to dice and boil them fork tender, drain and dry them. Put butter and garlic in a skillet and brown them with a little salt. Very tasty. I hope you'll try this soon! After all, you have the bodega for some great rutabaga!
What is that amazing tool which slices everything perfectly? I'm astonished. Nice tool, John!
yum, I think I've found my substitute for a potato side dish for Canadian thanksgiving!
Not only did I like this recipe I was laughing the whole way! This guy' s short jokes were to funny! Hope you got my videos
i love you chef john
I didn't think these ingredients could make something that looks that good. I guess I was in for a root awakening.
Whoops!! As if Chef John wasn't already Kool enough, and now he's into The Roots!!! 😲👍
They’re good and good for you, especially with cheese, cream and butter!
I KNEW at the 2:10 mark when he said "don't worry about evening it out perfectly, i have a trick that makes them perfectly even" that it was gonna be the ol' tapa tapa and the ol' shaka shaka combo!
Very nice. Yummy.
its a bit weird how excited i get when chef johns does the ol' shaka shaka and the tapa tapa
LOVE THAT CHEF JOHN KNOWS HIS MUSIC!!!!! :D
Thanks Chef
