Rooney: United Career, Management & Boxing? | Stick to Football EP 20

Спорт

Welcome back to Stick to Football, brought to you by SkyBet. On this week’s special episode we are delighted to be joined by Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney.
Alongside Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Jill Scott, Rooney opens the show revealing that he wants to remain in football management despite an approach to enter the boxing ring.
The all-time Manchester United top goal scorer talks about his managerial career so far, most recently at Birmingham City, and what he’s learnt from his spells in the dugout across England and America.
With five Premier League titles, a Champions League, FA Cup, Club World Cup and countless individual awards to his name, Rooney enjoyed a glorious career at Old Trafford where he established himself as one of the all-time great footballers.
The 38-year-old chats about his success, the infamous transfer request and how his time faired at the club after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement where he was reunited with his former Everton boss David Moyes before Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho took over.
Finally, Rooney delves into his childhood and gives his thoughts on the current Manchester United team.
If you liked the episode don't forget to let us know in the comments and if you want to listen only you can catch Stick to Football on all major podcast platforms.

This episode shows how caring Keano actually is. Every time Rooney's reply is a bit on the negative, (ie loss of confidence, downplaying himself) Keano would always reply with words of support. Keane's a legend.

The most underappreciated Rooney feature was his playmaking skills. That assist for Van Persie’s volley is criminally underrated. What a player he was. I loved watching him play. Form, no form, goals and assists or drought - he was always giving 100% on the pitch. If he was playing as the nine all the time, he would have scored more than Shearer. Sometimes I feel sorry for him. He thoroughly deserved to have that spot.

two favorite Rooney moments were assists ... one not even for United. First, the overhead lob assist to Persie's volley. Just the most precise moment of football I've seen. Perfection from both. Then second, playing in the US. Rooney chases down a ball and player at the half way line in the last minute of the game, just busting a lung. Wins the ball, lobs the pass in from the halfway line. Headed in. Goal. Wins the game. Camera pans back to Rooney coughing up a lung back at halfway. The man just never quit. Huge fan.

I’m a massive Rooney fan. My favourite United player together with Scholesy. But I do think Henry was the best striker in the Premier League ever. With that said, Wayne was regularly thrown all over the pitch. He was so good he was used almost everywhere because he was always value and quality. A great player for the club, but I do think that hindered his career a bit. He could’ve EASILY beaten Shearer’s record playing as a nine more. I remember an entire season when he played primarily on the right. And then people were complaining he wasn’t scoring as many 😂

I think that says just as much about the mentality of the modern day player as it does about Roy's ability as a manager. Sure, Keane would be firm but fair but if he's basically dealing with a bunch of spoiled adolescents (as just 1 of the challenges of the job), it's always going to be a tough job (probably why Neville and Carra want to give management a miss now).

I don't think he liked the pressure. The fakeness manager's have to talk in press conferences etc. Klopp has spoken his fair share of rubbish, and I'm currently sick of ETH's voice tbh. Keane would be good in some capacity, but he's hard to manage because he's intimidating and non compromising.

As a United fan, Wayne has always been such an enigma... We should all absolutely adore and revere him as one of our greatest ever, and one of the best raw talents England has ever produced... And yet, he's always been rejected by a lot of fans, not taken seriously and seen as a bit of a 'figure of fun'. Being scouse didn't help, but I think he was the victim of his own talent. He 'could' play anywhere and was happy to play anywhere because he just loved the game... But that worked against him, and Fergie started playing him wide or too deep like he's just a multipurpose squad player. It's all just a bit of a shame really. Respect to Wayne, one of the best to do it. Thanks for the goals!

If we go off players stories and accounts he’s down to earth, but volatile at a moments notice And a fierce competitor But over the years and the last few seasons at United, the spark inside him seemed to dwindle. The fire in his belly was going out. It was hard for me to accept as a child but as a young man i get it now. I’m glad he’s found purpose in management, even if it’s not going exactly to plan He’s still young, 38 Plenty of time to develop
