Schweinsteiger On United & Mourinho: "They Kicked Me Out.”
On this week’s episode on the Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, we are joined by Bayern Munich legend and German World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger.
We join Schweinsteiger in Munich, where he won eight Bundesliga’s, to reminisce on his impressive playing career, including his move to Manchester United where he was reunited with former coach Louis Van Gaal and how things took a turn for the worse under Jose Mourinho.
The German international reveals what piece was missing in the puzzle of that 2016/17 Manchester United team, and which rivals they could have learnt from. Plus, would a move away from Old Trafford be best for former teammate Marcus Rashford?
Schweinsteiger has played under some of the greatest managers, as he tells us about winning the treble under Jupp Heynckes in 2013 and trying to adapt to Pep Guardiola’s style of play at Bayern Munich when German football was number one in the world.
Bastian also speaks about the impressiveness at Bayern Munich, Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben’s competitiveness and changing tactics.

I'm Polish and have to admit, watching Bastian play for Germany was always a treat and a pleasure. As a kid my favourite midfielder was Ballack, as a teenager it was Bastian. I wish he played for Schalke, not nearly as prestigeous as Bayern or United but they'd sure treat him as he deserved.

Never did I think that a World Cup winner, a champions league winner, one of the best midfielder of his generation, a legend of one of the great clubs in Europe been kicked out of the dressing room and had to ask others to move his stuff just because he wasn’t allowed and had to train with the U16s. He was sad just to recap it to Gary and he still loves the club. All the love to you Basti. Good change is coming soon to united. Thank you for your service to our club. Forever legend❤

@sloppygoo It's always public knowledge. Fans notice when players aren't playing lol He couldn't have complained that much because there's no way Jose would invite him back to training if he did.
Basti and Muller made me fall in love with football during the 2010 World Cup. Such a top player. Love you Basti!

What a summer that was. That Germany team. WOW
I miss him in the Nationalmannschaft. What a Generation that was
What a top bloke, really showed huge character to go through that. Every professional should learn from his example.
Let's face it, lads, we are being spoiled with quality content on this channel 👌🏾
The humility this great man carries is phenomenal. Add to the fact he was one of the best midfielder of his generation and you have a LEGEND of the game that young kids should all aspire to.

Spot on
Loved every second of this interview.
Beautiful interview..... If Schweinsteiger is not a good person then he's the best actor alive. So calm and composed.
Basti is a very pleasant and a kind person. I met him during that season and he had nothing bad to say about the club despite his situation. Imagine this happening to the modern day player.
Massively underrated player. C. Ronaldo and Portugal still has nightmares about him. He should be considered in the best ever 11, but as usual midfielders (+ not premier league players) do not get the recognition. Germany's performances at the world cup and European championships since 2005 with Schweinsteiger: WC 2006: Bronze🥉 EC 2008: Silver🥈 WC 2010: Bronze🥉 EC 2012: Semifinal (no match for bronze)🎖 WC 2014: GOLD EC 2016: Semifinal🎖 --- 2016 Schweinsteger leaves Die Nationalelf--- WC 2018: K.O. at group stage EC 2021: K.O. at round of 16 WC 2022: K.O. at group stage Of course Germany had a golden generation (that actually delivered), but I think Schweini was the secret behind the success as a central midfielder with a lot of touches, a lot of running, a lot of goal contributions and a lot of tackles. Also his positivity, fighter mentality and charisma surely uplifted the rest of the team. You're the best, Basti

Another comment about being underrated when the player wasn't.

@@MrGts92 The real fans know indeed what a beast he was. But he doesnt get mentioned as one of the top midfielders a lot. You always hear Xavi iniesta busquets gerrard lampard scholes modric pirlo. Schweinsteiger isnt mentioned as often i feel.

How on earth was he underrated? He's one of the best midfielders ever. He had a pivotal role when Bayern won the treble in 2013 and 2014 WC.

@@Koen030NL That's what comes with being german. Ask Kroos. No other country has produced more different Ballon d'Or winners 2nd and 3rd places than germany but for some reason they aren't known for producing the finest players.
Unbelievable! This was an elite midfielder and a World Cup winner. One of the finest professionals in football.
Thanks for that magnificent interview Gary ❤
What an absolute gentleman. Great example of how a professional footballer should be. Another great interview, nice 1 Nev! 👌

Schweinsteiger what a player for Germany back in the day. Really strong German team - Lahm, Klose, Ozil, younger Thomas Muller.

Philip Lahm! A lot like Gary. Quiet, smart, hard worker, right back, captain.
Superb interview , great job Gary and overlap . What a great player
This interview is class - and I'm very thankful to have been alive just in time to follow Schweinsteiger's career from his first game for Bayern to lifting the world cup to retirement. What a legend of the game!
Warm, Kind and one of a kind. Won a ton of major trophies. Love the interview.

What a player world class! Really enjoyed the interview.
I only own 3 jerseys, Rooney, Ronaldo CR7 and Basti Schweinsteiger. Absolute legend of a man and a player
Absolute legend. Respect. Top top professional. Thank you for service to Manchester United!
He tells the story with a smile atleast. Good to see he's not bitter... Great segment.
Wow what a guest this will be. The deutsche football meister Bastian
This interview was WAY too short! Absolute gentleman. Gutted to hear how he was treated at United.
Hearing how he was treated, saddens me... United supporters were always happy to see Basti!
What a great guy and a class act! And a top footballer as well! The shift he put into winning the World Cup for Germany was off the scale, he was a warrior! So sad to hear how Woodward and Jose treated him! United fans loved him and still do!
One of my favourite signings for United. It breaks my heart to think he could have played so much more for us. A true legend and a true Red our Basti ❤
This is a classy gentleman, everyone else would be crying on social media. Another reason why Manchester United is doing bad, how tf can you make him train with the kids. It takes away the senior experience in training whilst adding tension and nervousness in the squad.
Sadly this man is the last winner we dragged into our club. It seems like no one listened to him and we are now where we are. We had opportunity after opportunity to keep going and we spurned them all and we deserve what we have now
Top interview. Nev always getting the best out of his guests👍🏼. Really enjoyed it
