This was so inspirational to watch, but unfortunately, we just tried to go solar and after a lot of research, meetings and even a canceled contract with an install company, I'm left feeling quite sad 😥 and disappointed at the outcome... Long story short, for solar to make sense for us and our location, we pretty much have to go 100% off grid, which I'm ok with, lol, just not the price to do it all... I have been "in love" with the idea of going solar for well over 5 years now, but after finally deciding to go forward with it, I have been met with a few sad facts and it might be something I have to let go of for another 5-10 more years... 😥😭 I did enjoy watching this video though and it did give me hope that I might even be able to do this myself in the future. 😅👍🏼

The first flashing they installed is incorrect… they need to go under the next layer of shingles, what they have done is set a dam in front of the shingle gap. It isn’t as critical on architectural shingles, but on 3 tab versions, it is quite important. At first it looked like they had 3tab, but the end when they broke the bit it looks like they have architectural.

I love that you did this yourselves and so did your neigbors. I like that you showed they partnered up with solar wholesale who gave them the kits and engineering to get the permits. I live in Canada. Do you know a company to partner with here, like solar wholesale that can get the permits etc? Like your neighbors I have the time to do the install myself. You must have other canadians who have reached out to you. Any resources for us to point me in the direction of doing it myself ? Thanks.

So the very first hole was to determine where the "trust" is? Like the actual wood so the screws can be good? So you have to make a "trust" hole throughout the build?

Truss is the word. You have to find the trusses in order to screw down the lag bolts. Usually once you find the first one you can measure 24" over for the next and so on. But houses are not perfect and when you drill you can miss the truss when you drill the pilot hole. There are different methods people use to find them. One popular one is to hit your roof with a hammer and listen for the distinctive sound of it hitting above the truss.

What was the overall time it took them to do this and could you share what the average cost of their install would be, just curious? We have a very complicated roof that we just replaced in 2019, cost around $26k (very steep and lots of hips and valleys). We are very handy people and I think we might look into this. Only problem I see is that my husband is afraid of heights! Girls with power tools!!

For this project they didn't have the complicated roof that you house sounds like it does. I'd estimate it took about 2-3 days of focusing on the work. You could install roof anchors and use safety harnesses, that's what my neighbors did.

There must be no regulations in the USA because these installs would not pass inspection here in Ontario.

I wish I DIYed mine...

Did those guys SERIOUSLY attach their safety ropes to the ridge vent plastic?

Curious to know if the panels cause additional noise in rainy conditions. Is any increase in noise noticeable indoors or while outdoors?

Not that I’ve noticed. There is the air gap between the shingles and the panels so if anything it’s actually quieter. I’ve not noticed anything different while outdoors.

Don't think so, they would have mentioned it as it's the most expensive part. Grid tie system lowering the power bill.

In PA where we live you get a 1-1 credit on your electric bill for excess generation (it's called net metering). So unless you want an integrated battery for blackouts (which are pretty rare anyway), it's generally not worth the cost.

I’m planning to install on my new home in Texas, what’s the best brand you recommend with affordable price. please advise. The quotes I got were around 25k with everything but I’m looking more cheaper.

There is usually a spot for a padlock to be put there but that’s not legal because one the reason the switch is there is for first responders to be able to shut down the system if needed.

They used aptos 360. Maybe they ran out. I know there is a supply issue for solar panels everywhere. Feel free to shoot me an email if you have other questions.

So I found a company that I am going go use. I have all gas furnace, stove, and water heater(on demand tankless). In your video it says that you use electric base board heating. With using those, what was your annual yearly electrical usage? I'm going with a 10.4 kw system, and was thinking about switching over in the future to all electrical since natural gas is getting outrageous.

I'd love to have solar, but what about when it comes to replacing the roof? all of that has to come off. That would be a significant cost, wouldn't it?

It may not all need to come off, the shingles underneath should last longer since the are protected from the heat, rain, etc. But if you did take it all off, you can probably take it all off in half a day with a few friends and then put the mounts on at the same time the new shingles go on to save time. Since you'd likely be putting everything back the way it was, it should go much faster than when first installed. I'm sure there are tricks installers use to make this process go as fast as possible.

Add solar to you're homeowners insurance. I live in Texas where we have hail storms a few time a year which to be honest along with other natural disaster is the only things you need to worry about if you've had the system installed correctly.

Why do none of these houses have roof vents for plumbing ?

Yes, our houses have vents. They are on the backside.

They went with Enphase which is more expensive. Should ve gone with regular string inverter and avoid getting a kit. $4k savings

They used APsystems not enphase. Plus it gives panel level monitoring and installing micro inverters is easier.

YEA BEST BET USE A KIT COMPANY......DONT TRY TO DO IT ALL YOURSELF......Only way to go. IMO. got my permit fist shot passed inspection and all engineering requirements Included.

That’s the way it is with any solar array. It’s so first responders can power it down if needed. It’s a requirement.

Thanks, I’m not sure what you mean. I would find it hard to climb a ladder carrying a panel and if you had to do it yourself.

I had u a thumb down, until I watched the whole video. BUT y'all need to get the STORAGE! The day is coming where they will charge y'all storage for hooking up to the GRID.

I'm curious, why the thumb's down at first? Right now, it doesn't make financial sense to get battery backup in PA, that is, unless you want to have it for power outages. If things change, like they change the net metering rules or add in time of use rates, then it would be good to look into an integrated battery solution.

@@gwarlow TESLA is known to burn, the old led acid are tried and true. But now they are talking GRAPHNE now. I don't like GRAPHINE, I think it is evil.

I have 2 neighbors 1 paid a company to do theirs for $32,000 and their bill only went down 14 dollars , I ask why so little return. They said the company told them it would take a while to get them dialed in. Lol Then my other neighbor paid $8000 and did everything himself and I mean by himself, and the 1st month fpl paid him back $80 , 2nd month $110,. And since then has averaged $ 115 back in his pocket every month for the year. Oh I ask him what his bill was before he installed solar , he said I have a big house so about $280 and up. That's a $ 395 reversal of money. His solar will pay for it's self in 3 yrs.

I got some used panels for just $150 that I refurbished, which if roof mounted could potentially generate around $10 a month, I don't think it's worth roof mounting such a small array, so I made it an "off-grid" system, so I don't quite get that much power.

9:00 NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. You cannot coil wire like that. Wire that is inside the coil will not be able to shed heat and you can end up exceeding the thermal threshold of the cable EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT OVER CURRENT. DO NOT DO THIS YOU WILL BURN DOWN YOUR HOUSE. If need be make longer open loops or more sanely JUST CUT AND RE TERMINATE THE DAMN WIRES.

save all the money you want to but if you don't know how to take it apart when it comes time to replace the Roof the money you saved goes towards that.. so Is there a solution for that?

Best case scenario is to get solar right after you need to replace your old roof so you don't have to worry about it for the next 30 years... But if you do need to replace the roof the panels snap on and off fairly easily..

Your neighbors live in fear. They should never ever leave their house.

Also your install lacks a critter guard/flashing to keep animals out from your solar install. That's another fail.

You could hear what they were saying if they didn’t have on a pollen mask. You lose this time. Keep trying.
