Fun fact: The song "Gangnam Style" is actually about deepening and widening income and wealth inequality in and around the Gangnam district of South Korea. The general poise Psy has in the song (especially curling the upper lip and engaging in 'neck stretching') are a hyperbolic parody of wealthy subcultures in Gangnam, while the lyrics suggest a satire of extreme privilege while everyone else is ignored and implied to be left behind economically.

Had a LOT of time to research new to me music, still love my Bigbang, still love Lee Joongi, still love Scarlett Heart Ryeo. @kentvesser9484

It is very important. Depending on his age it might have been Korean folk or ballad artists as they were and still are quite popular and many were able to get around the music censorship of the time by doing much like poets and writing lyrics that young listeners understood as critical of the status quo, but censors might not be in tune with. When I say folk singer think more Bob Dylan or Simon & Garfunkel. A somewhat uniquely Korean genre that is very popular is also called trot music, which largely arose during the Japanese occupation from 1910 to 1945. The funny thing is that while K-pop is heavily marketed, it isn't what many people listen to in Korea especially among older generations. Even many teens may listen to things other than K-pop or at least they will act like they are "too cool" to listen to it when they are interviewed on TV or by a KZread channel. Though there are pop groups that get so popular they kind of become the nation's representative like BTS, IU, or Girls Generation, where even grandmas and grandpas know who they are and have likely heard their music.
