    Remarkable. A civil, intelligent debate between two articulate and well-informed people who had the best interests of their country at heart. We definitely don't see that anymore. I am a Democrat, but I came away from this debate impressed by both Reagan and Bush and I wish that modern politicians shared their passion for our country.

    Wow this is fascinating. So much more polite and the candidates actually discuss specific policies, numbers, data etc. and this has to be because the population is better informed with an overall better education. Now reflect on what is different in society and why this must be.

  • @thegreatcheesedemon

    @thegreatcheesedemon

    4 жыл бұрын

    The things discussed at a debate or in a candidate's platform have tenuous links to how people vote. This was one intimate venue and not the entire electorate, after all. I think the cultural shift is real, but I don't think it's because people were better educated or better informed in 1980. I think it's the incentives of the media, and the development of strategy. In terms of personal reaction, seeing Bush calmly discuss how he was worried that his opponent would lower taxes by too much made me think it's a no-brainer that he lost.

    @@Rickswars I believe it's more complicated than that. I wouldn't say it's liberal media specifically but most of the media in general. With the rise of clickbait content in the age of internet oversaturation, news articles seemed less intent on reporting the truth and more intent on getting clicks. There's also the problem of absolute tribalism propagated by similar media outlets, social media outrage, and of course, the fact that Trump is currently the only representative of the Republican party despite being the most polarizing figure of this generation. This causes Republicans who don't even necessarily agree with him to feel as though they must support him, since the alternative is not supporting Republicans at all.

Both Sam Bush & Prescott Bush made a fortune during both world wars. Sam selling weapons to both sides and Prescott banking with the Nazis and exploiting POW in the concentration camps. You will also not that when both Bush's became President ( there were Wars). The very opposite is true of GHW Bush - he's in Hell , right next to Lucifer where he belongs!!!!

    This is truly the way a debate should be held. Notice there were no time constraints and that they had both agreed to that in the beginning. Now if you want to see an even more civil debate, look up the 1960 Kennedy/Nixon debate which was the 1st debate ever televised. It's even more civil as the two of them continuously compliment eachother and they're from different parties in that one.

    this is one of the best debates in the US history by the two great former presidents, we are able to know what is the true debating, not insulting or humiliating. each candidate had foresight to settle down the current situation, which was formed by the careful consideration in each perspective. and that revealed in their's dialogue naturally.

    The primaries were in progress. It's April. The nominating convention would be in July. As the presenter mentioned, Bush had just won more than half the delegates in Pennsylvania, but Reagan was already handily ahead. But, there were 24 state contests left to go, including delegate-rich California where Reagan had a huge advantage, still being pretty popular as the former governor.

    Reagan was right that the massive tax cuts increased revenues ... Bush was right that the deficit increased ... what history shows those deficits were increased by increased spending - not cutting taxes. No one ever talks about cutting spending across the board. Reagan talked about it a lot when he took office but how much spending was really cut?

    It’s funny hearing Bush quote Art Laffer as an authority on tax cuts leading to increased deficits when his Laffer Curve ultimately shows that’s not always the case. I can’t remember whether the Laffer Curve was solidified during the Reagan administration, which would be an explanation of why he was quoted as being uncertain in this debate, as I wasn’t born yet, but just an observation of how history can unfold.

    It has been years since I saw this on TV. I must say that it is rather interesting. Reagan and Bush, to my knowledge were never friends but they are taking the party way here and being nice to one another. Reagan must have found some reason later on to bring Bush in, which I wish he had never done. The Bush dynasty way back to Bushe's father, then later we will get "W" which brought our country down to the depths more than any Democrat ever dreamed of (except for several whacky ones that are now in the 2016-2020's years.) Anyway, I'll leave the Bush Dynasty dark things go by. I wish debates would be more civil and less hostility as they have been for last 30 years or so...this struggle for money and power in a nation as ours has raised its ugly head and sadly will stay until as all authoritarian countries do, we are headed to hell on earth. The story of the human heart that is all about self.

    Instead of raising interest rates on debt to arrest inflation it would be better to raise interest on bank deposits. If merchants/employers earned higher interest on their savings they would be better prepaired to resist passing along price increases to their customers. Consumers earning higher interest on their savings would save more for major purchases instead of taking on debt, increased savings would lead greater investment in the economy because rising savings would facilitate greater lending. Greater lending supported with larger down payments on loans would lead to higher economic growth with a lower debt burden. Keeping debt under control by raising interest on savings instead of raising interest on debt which slows economic growth which would cause a resession.
