    About .375 on the big end, .240 on the small end, and .912 in length. Of course there is a little wiggle room on length and the small end diameter, but the big end needs to be real close to ball size.

    A .36 round ball with a full load is NOT a joke. Civil War Confederate veterans said it “took all the fight” out of the enemy and was very effective. They liked round balls over conicals. This is from actual interviews of veterans by Elmer Keith back in the 1920s.

    Hello, I just tried making some cartridges for my .44 Remington using conicals. I kept the former straight, no taper and it worked great. I experimented with 12 grains 777 FFFG I was more interested to see if the cap ignited the charge. Pretty good 5 out of the 6 went great, 1 was a little tricky so that was probably me. I'm couldn't slide in a lubed conical so I will roll it with the former next time. I liked the technique, very simple, cheap and easy. Can use up a bit of spare time at home and maximise time at the range. Thanks very much for the video.

    In my opinion, your paper cartridges would be more durable, less likely to fall apart than trying to leave the ball half out of the paper. Not something you want to put in an ammo box and shake about like a martini but they'll not fall apart at the slightest bit of jostling.

  • @acratone8300
    @acratone83004 жыл бұрын

    the civil war belt box was just a square leather box with a wooden block filling the leather box. Wood block had holes drilled for paper cartridges. The paper cartridges were stuffed all the way down the holes. Reason I mentioned this, is the tail on the paper (formed by twisting) allowed something to grab onto to pull the paper cartridge out of the holes in the wooden block. You could grab the nub of that tail. So they did not cut the top tail down so tight when making the cartridges so they would have enough to grab onto to lift the cartridges out of the wood block. I don't know if they bit off the tail, or cut it off, or just left it on after loading the cylinder out in the field.

    The issue with not using lube on the cartridges is it will cause the bore to foul out and this WILL decrease accuracy. At day’s end it also helps with cleanup of the bore, but the main reason to do it is for accuracy.

    Thanks. I wish I had started rolling these 20 years ago when I got into these guns...but only really started doing this a couple years or so ago. I used to carry a bag or box of loading components and powder measure and spend a lot more time loading than shooting. It's a lot more fun this way. Now I carry a little Sucrets throat/cough drop tin box filled with cartridges and a little cap tin in the same pocket for all my shooting.

    So here's a point I 100 percent agree with. As a man who has lived most of my life in grizzly country one can not justify light loads. It's far better to have to much for the rattlesnake than to little at the other end of the spectrum. One the brass of today has no resemblance to those of yesteryear. As to the paper cartridge subject of the video. Another simplicity for those who over complicate a process. So here's a thought for contemplation. I'm more a new model army guy, that being said I am baffled no one seems to utilize or talk about the potential of a replica new model Navy's full size army frame. Seem stuck on traditional loads. Casting aside potential Mountain man

    I'm going to experiment with getting extra long papers and try rolling a wad on top of the powder just to make the projectile closer to the barrel. One reason people do this is to reduce the "jump" the ball has to make from the cylinder to the barrel and it's supposed to make it more accurate. I dont think itll be too hard to put a wonder wad or something on top of the powder before putting the ball in.

    I use the tube from an old Bic pen for my 36 if it's down the chamber pretty nice with a little wiggle roomI basically just wrap the paper around the pain like I was going to roll it into a cigarette hold the wad and the ball at the tip whilst I lick and stick around and once I get it stuck twist the top of the paper around the top of the ball to hold it in, pour 20 grains of 777 from my flask cut the excess, glue another small square over the exposed powder it's still a work-in-progress but I use a raw hemp papers

    If the dowel former extends beyond the paper, you don't have to shake it out - just pull it from the paper cylinder. Of course with the form dowel only as long as desired, you avoid any step up or step down, but I would prefer some kind of handhold for control.

    I don't put any grease or anything over the mouth of the chambers after loading(and I don't use wads between ball and powder) but my chambers are tight enough to shave a nice ring of lead using .375 Hornady round balls. I have never experienced a chainfire in this .36 Griswold or the Pietta 1860 .44 using .454 balls. I have an (unfired when I traded for it a couple months ago) earlier built (1995) pietta "Navy" .44 steel frame that doesn't shave a good ring of lead from .454's, and it has chainfired on me....the firing chamber and the next one to the left. Didn't hurt a thing, but I'm either going to get a new cylinder for it or a conversion cylinder for .45 Colt.

    How does the 36 cal. compare to a 44 cal. in stopping power??

  • @plowboysghost

    @plowboysghost

    6 жыл бұрын

    In terms of "destructive" power, the .36 makes slightly smaller holes than the .44 does, but .36 round ball holes are much larger than .38 Special holes...especially when the ball strikes something harder than target paper where the soft round ball starts flattening out. In a later video, I shot a .36 through a car windshield thinking that I had used my .44 cap and ball (yeah I know how embarrassing it is to have to admit I shot my car with the wrong gun :) ) and the resulting holes were so large that while looking at them, I had no indication that they were made with a .36 instead of a .44. They were huge. In terms of energy, of course the .36 with 25-grains of 3F is less power than .44 on top of 35-grains of 3F....but though I've done no penetration tests, I am very confident in the .36's ability to do some damage. .36 at the owner's manual recommended powder charges is pretty weak, though. My .36 loves 25-grains of 3F Goex and that powder charge really wakes up .36 cal.

    I have a question, I have a 1862 Colt Police 36. I use wads with butter bore between the powder and ball, in the paper cartridges does it foul quicker? And do you use conicals? Very nice video!

  • @plowboysghost

    @plowboysghost

    7 жыл бұрын

    I'm using Hornady round balls...but I expect conicals would work the same. I'll find out when I get a couple conical molds in the near future and start casting them. As to the fouling: I can't say for sure how your gun will 'act', but my Pietta 1860 Army .44 and my Pietta .36 Griswold run fine with no wads, so i don't use them. I've never tried to put a wad in a paper cartridge, so I can't speak from experience on that. I would think that as long as the wad remains relatively flat and rams home straight, it should work the same as placing a wad between powder and ball when you're loading loose powder and ball.

  • @plowboysghost

    If it were kept to a maximum diameter that would reliably fit the bore, then it would technically fit...but I don't know how easy it would be to ignite the powder through the paper in a rifle's chamber. It would probably bust the paper like it does with the pistol IF it were seated hard enough with the ramrod. Seems like the worst case scenario is that you might have to pick the flash hole ...IF it's one that allows you to get at the chamber directly like a flintlock.

    I haven't in this .36 Griswold, nor in the Pietta 1860 Army .44 that I had. (Ive owned many over the years, but only started loading without wads or grease (don't think I ever put grease over the chamber mouths...pretty sure anyway) with those two revolvers. I DID, however, have one adjacent chamber chainfire in the older(1995) Pietta steel framed "Navy".44 that I ended up putting a gated Kirst .45 colt/Schofield conversion on. It lit off the chamber that was next in line of rotation. There was a little louder report, but other than that, I noticed nothing when it happened. there was obvious lead residue where that ball had struck the wedge and split with part of the splatter going up and part going below the wedge, but no harm whatsoever. Looking it over good afterwards, I'm convinced that the only chance of getting lead spattered toward any part of the shooter would be the most unlikely chamber...the bottom one, going off...and even then you've got the frame and the cylinder between it and your face, so I guess I'm just not that concerned with it. The ball coming out of that short cylinder without speeding up in the barrel isn't that powerful, yet. I continue to shoot without wad or grease in my Griswold without incident....but your mileage may vary, so consider what I've experienced, but use your own good judgement. If I see you use wads or grease, i promise you I won't think anything negative.
