Here in Germany, Roller Shutters called Rollläden in German, are very common in apartments and homes. They are a type of door or window shutter consisting of many horizontal slats (or sometimes bars or web systems) hinged together. The door is raised to open it and lowered to close it. On large doors, the action may be motorized. It provides protection against wind, rain, fire and theft. In shutter form, it is used in front of a window and protects the window from vandalism and burglary attempts.

We call it tapparelle in Italy and they are super common. I always wonder why Americans don't use it as they provide safty during storms and strong wind

Hello @lucamarchina8671! Thank you for your comment. That sounds very beautiful in Italian. I also have no clue why they don’t have them in American homes. I have seen them at downtown Los Angeles small businesses, but they serve more to deter thieves from breaking in. If someone ever jumps on the idea, they would make a fortune in America.

@@jesselopezvlog It's a matter of time ...we just brought bidè to America (they are super expensive there) next will be taparelle. But they are a pain in the ass to fix, my dad deos It on his own but otherwise you should call someone.

These are available in the US. They are use most commonly on houses near coastlines. Rich people like to have them integrated into alarm systems.

First saw these in 2008 in NW Spain. My gf at the time had them on her apt. She called them persianas and said they were everywhere in Spain. This past summer, spent a week in a beach rental in Lewes, DE that had these on the ocean-facing screen porch. When a rainstorm would roll in, just hit the switch and the whole array of them would lower down, then tighten up so that the light holes blink out. Batten down the hatches! Very slick and marvelously effective. I see a wider market for these in the US to massively increase the nighttime R value of windows and patio doors.

@chriskelvin248 Thank you for sharing your story. These roller shutters are becoming more and more popular all over the world. They're pretty much standard, here in Germany. I like them for saving energy on high electricity bills, both in the summers and winters, as they are also very good for insulation.

Considering the cost of heating is rising in a very nasty way these last few winters it does seem like a prudent investment - albeit a bit of a ball ache to install if you aren't building them into the building from scratch.

Hi, Jesse! I've seen them in newer Paris apartments. I find them noisy but at least you don't fuss with dusting them.

Hey Heidy! I think they’re called Jalousien in France. They definitely are noisy, but effective at lowering energy costs. Hope you are doing well.

@jakebartelmay I wouldn’t even begin to know where to refer you, nor know how reliable any of these companies are. They’re mostly local small business owners in my German area, here in Bavaria. Plus , there should already be something similar in the states, that would probably be more economical. There is a website at neuffer.de based off Stuttgart that you can get a free quote by calling +49 711 860 60 200 or by emailing them at info@neuffer.de just to get an idea, or Google search.
