Funny, I don't think of rolladens as a security measure, more like temperature/ light control

That's because they're actually for light & temperature control. I don't like this automated "every window down together" bs.

I love these. We have them in Greece too. I will be installing the same system on our home in America. In Greece people like to have them for napping. We never really close them at night as we leave the windows open for the breezes.

That's why there are slits in them. You don't lower them all the way . You stop them while the light is still showing and it allows airflow while still securing the home. You can open the window all the way and air will still come in.

Does every German home really have these? Like 100%? Just curious, never been there but was all over Austria for a month....visited several homes, but never saw these there. Are you from the PI?

  • @leDespicable

Well, this answer is a bit late, but I'm pretty sure 99 % of German homes have these. Not necessarily on all windows, though. Small windows like bathroom windows or windows in a staircase might not have them. We live in an attic apartment, and for some reason two of our 3 normal windows (other than that we only have roof windows) don't have blinds. I suppose there was no room because of the roof, but it's still dumb because one of these windows faces west, so it's literally hell in summer.

This is a modern, expensive house. Usually, they're just thin wood or plastic, and are meant to keep the light out, not intruders. Metal ones with a central control seem very fancy/paranoid.

Most of Europe does not have earthquakes of note (excluding Italy and Greece), and so can make their housing of fireproof materials. Much of the West coast in America is seismically active, and houses have to be made of mostly wood. Firecodes in the USA prevent us from using this nifty gadget - they looks quite nice to have.

That has nothing to do with fire, they won't harm, they are outside! You can open manually superfast... And earthquakes are way more common in Japan yet they also do mostly build with bricks and concrete... It's costs, not catastrophes why most american houses are made of wood...

We have them on our house in Oklahoma. Ours are not electric. We use them to insulate the house during winter & summer which makes a huge difference in our heat & electric bills. We also work rotating Shifts. These blinds help us to sleep during the day and keep outdoor noise to a minimum. We also use them when Severe Storms ( Tornado, High Winds, Hail, Severe Thunder storms)If power goes out. These Blinds help insulate the house to keep the heat in. I wish theses were sold every where in the USA.

Plus, they are easy to lift. It's not like they're locked into place. Their main purpose is not really safety, but insulation. When closed, they keep the warmth in the house in cold winter nights and they keep the house cool in summer.
