Rob, I wear my sub in the shower whilst I was watching your video. Once you go up in price range and get a feel of a quality watch, it's hard to come back down to micro brands and even every day seikos. You feel the difference in the metal and bracelet etc. Much like drinking a single malt. After a few different single malt whisky, than you go back to the everyday entry brand whisky, you taste the difference and you find it hard to down the entry brand whisky.

I don’t. Yes I did feel the superior quality of the two Rolexes I had, but in the end, overall it wasn’t fun for me wearing such expensive time pieces (and potential investments) in my day to day activity. Not to mention having a bigger collection of luxury watches is not something I could afford. I eventually sold them when I needed some money, but never been tempted to buy another one again, even now after 10 years, I got back to $50 to $1000 watches and I’m having so much fun, not tempted at all with higher end luxury watches. And even if I did I would not buy a Rolex now with the prices just because I’m not stupid. Rob had the opportunity to buy it at a reasonable price so that’s ok. Most people don’t.

Hi Rob, well done on wearing any watch for that period of time! I’ve owned my 114060 since 2015. It was an engagement present and I’ve worn it mainly on family occasions and holidays over the past 6 years, hence it’s still in great condition and it still feels special when I wear it. l would love to wear it more regularly but I work in an environment where people don’t get paid an awful lot and I guess I feel it puts distance between my co-workers and I given the brand image. I also like to try out other watches, so it’s often easy to pass over the Rolex in favour of something else. Your timing is uncanny because I’ve actually been wearing it daily this week as an experiment to see if I can get over my hesitation and wear it more regularly. After all, I hope to pass it to my son one day and I’d like him to remember me wearing it. Be interesting to see if your feelings change over time, but for now, I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Hearing your experience, I’m encouraged to do the same.. All the best, Craig 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I'm only a few years into the watch journey, I see a lot of similarities between Rolex and Apple. Apple distilled their design into what Johnny Ive always called its "essential" form. The problem becomes then, where do you go after that? the designs can feel sort of stuck, or outdated yet people still love them. I'd love to understand this from a psychology of design perspective because both companies make a lot of money doing it!

  • @retardinho5048

    @retardinho5048

    3 жыл бұрын

@@randymilano I see what you mean. But the difference is, that Apple products do have an actual purpose, so the design has to make a compromise between what’s efficient and what people like. Rolex on the other hand creates mechanical watches, which frankly don’t really have an utility purpose, but are more of a luxury accessory. No one needs to rely on a mechanical watch for time telling. They don’t have the Same difficulties like Apple and can freely design watches the way they like, as long as the movement fits in.

I totally feel what you’re saying here. I appreciate its many many runs of the ladder down from a Rolex but I recently bought my first Swiss watch when I picked up an Oris Big Crown ProPilot last month. I’m an ordinary guy with a very average income so for years I never thought I’d ever go beyond entry to mid level watches from Seiko and G Shock etc. But like the story about the frog in the pot who doesn’t realise the water is boiling if you turn the heat up slowly enough, this hobby has a way of sneaking up on you 😂🐸 I’m currently on day 36 of my unintentional watchfast with the Oris. I just can’t seem to take it off! I still love and appreciate the other watches in my collection, they just aren’t the Oris so they’re all sitting in the watch box. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to make the step into Rolex land but it’s actually kind of comforting to know that if I do, it’ll actually be worth it, if you see what I mean. Because if I feel like I do with a humble Oris, the feeling of going on that journey with watches and finally getting an actual Rolex must be a so out of this world! Congratulations on scoring such an incredible watch 🥃

But after handling the BB58, Submariner, and Seadweller in person and trying them all on, I wouldn’t pass up any of those three at retail. The step up in quality, feel, and timeless value is apparent. It’s like going from a Toyota Camry up to a Porsche Cayenne. Ive driven both and it’s just this understated sense of a heightened experience being in one versus the other. The workmanship and wearing experience definitely overshadows what people falsely believe is a markup for marketing. Don’t knock it until you try it.

I just watched this video and laughed because you sound very similar to what I'm experiencing. I bought a BB58 Blue a short while ago and I don't wear anything else in my collection...And I have some very nice pieces. I want to buy a new watch. I look everyday. I have money just sitting there screaming to be spent. But I continue to look down at my wrist and say, "nope...not while I have this." I have NEVER had a feeling like this about a watch. Until your video, I was thinking that I was just going through a phase...and maybe I am...but it sure feels different this time. I've read a few of the other comments...and maybe, as some have said, that it's just a longer than average "honeymoon period." Possibly. But the next watch (and I'm sure, eventually, there will be a "next watch") is REALLY going to have a lot to live up to compared to this experience. I haven't lost the drive, or love, for the hobby. It's just very calming right now.

I wanted a Rolex Submariner for years starting in my early 20s. Recently I ended up buying a 1997 Tudor Sub 79190. I love it, and it has enough similarities to satisfy the Rolex Sub itch. I may get a Rolex Sub in the future, but I still get irriated with the counterfeit market out there. It shouldn't matter if some people will assume your Rolex is a fake, but it does seem to bother me. Also, I'd rather have someone say "oh, it that a Rolex?", and I'm like no it's a Tudor. Most people don't know Tudor like they would Rolex. I'm 46 now, maybe at 50 I'd get an Explorer 1 or a Submariner. I'd be able to rationalize the purchase. Liked the pre-41mm maxi case too. Not a fan of the increasing size trend, aside from the new 36mm Explorer...which I like very much.

Hey more power to you. I hope you enjoy it and it also helps you got this channel that helps pay for your watch hobby right? 😅👍 I hope you get to treasure that watch for the rest of your life and wear it. My only problem with Rolex is everybody spouting them as investments and never wearing them. Sure given the current state of the industry they are. But if I managed a Rolex I'd wear it all the time, keep it maintained, and think of it as an heirloom to pass down. That's how special they should be. I'd probably sell off a few of my "low tier" watches because of that too. For me, I finally got my green Seiko SafArnie last week. I've wanted a digital tuna style watch since I found out the tech and brand came out in 78 when I was born. The 78 watch isn't my style but the green Arnie with hints of red defiantly is. Yes I know it's not the way you do a birthyear watch but trying to source and maintain a 78 digital tuna is not something I'm interested in. Now the urge to collect is mostly gone. Now I'm thinking of saving up for a Seiko Astron SBX017 solar Titanium GPS watch and a Casio Protrek PRW-70T (or a newer ultimate Protrek Titanium if it comes out by the time I have the money). Once I have those I think I'm basically done and I will dump a few watches. I just don't have the urge anymore after getting my SafArnie, my Protrek PRW-6600Y-1A9CR, a Seiko Land series Prospex SRPD31, Momentum Vortech GMT, my Steeldive 1970 (Willard), a Gshock Rangeman, and a solar Gshock Square...The rest can go. Hell the Gshocks will probably go as gifts at some point. I already gave my gravity master to my cousin's son to congratulate him for joining the Canadian armed forces. I found my Niche and the only thing I might buy from now on are some different Protreks for my Protrek collection or maybe a Hamilton Kahki 42m (saving that one to commemorate something special in my life if/when it happens). ....unless I come into a nice sum and a Big crown pointer is financially responsible.😅

Sub is just a damn good watch overall (built, comfort, proportion, robustness, versatility ). I would only buy it at MSRP and nothing more for a non-essential luxury item. I would rather wear the Sub out often than daily a 50K Lange 1😵 I dreaded having to play the AD game so I’m still waiting for the call while enjoying my BB58 Blue and Stowas :_D

you're not ruined until you start wearing a watch on both wrists. BTW, an interesting experiment would be to wear it until DST change and then reset. we often hear reviewers tell us how much a watch gains or loses per day but it would really be more interesting to see how it does over a period of months or years of daily normal use. Congratulations on the sub ,it is a beauty!

Your thinking is just a function of your current wealth. You’re ok wearing it regularly & don’t feel the need to baby it; in the same way Bruce had to sell the VC because he clearly wasn’t comfortable. Completely normal behaviour imo

I'm surprised you are so taken with this watch and you flipped the OP39 white dial so fast. It seems there's a lot of overlap in terms of the case, bracelet, and overall quality. I guess the Sub is a very different watch but still surprised since we know you love white dials.

Like you Rob I was fortunate to get my 124060 retail and just like you I do not baby it so any marks are my doing and I'm OK with that, it's in my rotation but maybe does get more wrist time than the others. I didn't buy it as an investment either as I prefer to enjoy the watch on the wrist. I personally prefer the sub without the date, some other watches in the rotation have the date complication and I find I check them less to read the date these days.

to each his own. you don't have to apologize. i'm old enough to remember when these were hundreds of dollars, not thousands. yes, everything's more these days and the sub is probably the most iconic of all rolexes. i would caution those who might be endangering their financial security with a move of this sort. if desperation sets in i wouldn't want this purchase hanging over my head.

The watch world is strange in the sense that both newcomers and those deeply entrenched in watches both seem to gravitate strongly towards Rolex. In other hobbies and categories of collectibles the 'cognoscenti' tend to look to more specialist interests and items as their tastes are formed based on past experiences, but when it comes to watches Rolex is the be all and end all. Seems a bit shallow somehow.

Right. I don‘t di this any more. You can buy almost any Planet Ocean for 20% less. You get a better looking watch, and the quality and wearability are equal. The only Rolexes I would buy are a preowned Milgauss or the Wildman Milsub. But 18.000?! I think not.

The Rolex’s just feel amazing on wrist and I could almost be a one watch guy…almost lol. I will say the AK is the go to watch for me right now and YES I wear it for everything and don’t baby it. Wore it working on Broncos in Moab earlier this year and absolutely picked up some scratches, don’t even care!!!

I like them but the marketing and supply games has made the brand more important than the watches themselves. This is Rolex’s fault as they’ve made who gets one so random. This is working for them financially but it’s not working for them for their reputation. The demand is there because you can’t buy them. The random waiting list nonsense rather than taking orders and deposits is a desperate mess.
